ARRIVE ALIVE CUP UPDATE - 13 AUGUST 2008 Story By : AAC
Last Friday's Arrive alive Cup contest was once again a close encounter, with Illawarra Sports High coming out on top.
The end result was a thrilling 11-10 victory to Illawarra over competition heavyweights Endeavour Sports. The win advances Illawarra Sports High to the semi finals of the 2008 Arrive alive Cup.
The match began with a real intensity with Endeavour Sports looking strong in defence.
This defensive strength was exemplified on their goal line when they were able to keep Illawarra Sports from crossing despite the Wollongong school having a wealth of ball in good field position.
In the 11th minute a great back line movement saw Endeavour Sports post the first points of the afternoon through a try to their captain Kane Morgan.
The try was converted by John Nicholas and Endeavour gained the early 6-0 advantage against the run of play.
Late in the first half Illawarra Sports continued mounting pressure on the Endeavour line.
Captain Beau Henry capitalised with 7:52 remaining in the first half.
Henry grubbered and after a timely deflection off an Endeavour defender, Henry was able to regather and score.
The conversion left the scores locked at 6-6 at half time.
Illawarra Sports gained an very early advantage in the second half in a similar fashion to their first try.
A Damien Cook grubber kick from dummy half took a deflection off an Endeavour Sports player only for Cook to regather and score.
Endeavour were keen to respond and it was through their Captain, Morgan that the school looked most likely to do this.
Two strong line breaks from Morgan had the Illawarra Sports defensive line looking vulnerable.
The tight scoreboard and the quality of the two sides created a high intensity contest.
Yet neither team could break the opposition try line; a credit to the two schools defence.
Both sides launched an aerial assault on the opposition wingers, however wingers from both teams handled the pressure well under the high ball.
It was with 7:54 left on the clock that Endeavour Sports found the try line through a try to Blake Ferguson and it came through some good hands and a case of simple numbers out wide.
The conversion was missed and the scores were again locked at 10-10.
In a gripping finale to a great match it was Beau Henry that emerged the hero.
With just under a minute left on the clock Henry kicked the match winning field goal.
Illawarra Sports were victorious 11-10.
It was a thrilling contest and one of the games of the year thus far.
Illawarra Sports will now play a Queensland school in the semi finals of the Arrive alive Cup.

Story & Photo's :
Endeavour got away with a lucky win against an impressive Farrer MAHS at Leichhardt Oval today.
The first points of the game came after a powerful charge at the line by Endeavour winger Setope Saviinaea in the left corner. Blake Williamson missed the conversion.
Leading 4 - 0 at the half time break Farrer peppered the Endeavour line and finally scored in the left corner with a diving try to Farrer winger Dominic Bower.
The conversion went wide and the scores remained the same 4 - all up to the last few minutes of the game when the Endeavour boys finally turned it on.
Levi Dodd was good enough to beat the backpeddling Farrer defence to give his side the lead, the conversion attempt was heading toward Tasmania and was way wide.
The game sealer was when Sharks SG Ball player Blake Williamson ran half the field to be smashed by some fierce defence then he bent over to touch the ball behind the try line.
So well done to the Endeavour Boyz, things are looking good when they get the ball wide and will be practicing hard for the next Arrive alive Cup game.
MATRAVILLE SPORTS Vs De la SALLE BANKSTOWN
Well be honest, who wants to play Matraville Sports at footy these days?
Today Matraville torn De La Salle Bankstown apart, ripping in a point a minute rampage for 100% of the game, the 50 - 4 scoreline was a good results concidering De La played some good footy.
Matraville were without some of their best players, Dominic Walsh is up in Townsville with the Australian Schoolboys and young Adam Reynolds was in the crowd on crutches watching his team mates from the stands as a result of breaking his Tibia in last weeks CHS St. Mary's Cup Grand Final against the Endeavour Boys, but Matraville were too good in that game too.
Sam Brunton was exciting in the 1st half with 3 tries, it was 28 - 0 at half time, Matra just continued to pass and run and tackle and score points. Well done to Scottie and the coaching staff, they boys play good football. Goal kicker Mark Khoreallah converted 7 tries with some deadly kicking - MORE SOON & Game PHOTO'S

MUNDINE MAKES HIS MARK FOR THE FUTURE Story & Photo BY : MICHAEL CARAYANNIS
IN an age where NRL players are athletes first and footballers second, Matt Mundine a cousin of former Dragons star Anthony Mundine breaks the mould.
Dragons under-20s coach Steve Price says it is Mundine's mould that needs to change. Compare his 112-kilogram frame to first grade stars Matt Cooper and Sonny Bill Williams and the physiques just don't match, even if Mundine's freakish talents sometimes set the under-20s Toyota Cup competition alight.
Playing at lock for St George Illawarra, the Earlwood Saints junior is equally at ease taking a hit up or throwing a cut out ball. He has talent and it's just a matter of developing this 18-year-old into a NRL super star. | LEARN MORE |

ENDEAVOUR SHS Vs MATRAVILLE
The Under 13's and a combined under 15 & 16 teams played against Matraville today on the Field of Dreams.
The under 13's won their game with a good show and some good footy to win a close game 14 - 4.
The U15/16 side came up against a much more serious team from Matra, it looks like Matra had some of their Junior Rep's playing today and Endeavour must have been short of numbers with a couple players not even in the footy program
So the Endeavour boys did reasonably well against this formidable side from across Botany Bay.
Matra ran away with the game 16 - 38 to give the home side something to work towards, like not dropping the ball, completion rates playing for your team mates.
Endeavour played the Hills SHS in the CHS University & Buckley Shields on the schools new football field today.
The morning started well for the home team with the Buckley Shield (under 14's) having a comfortable 12 - 0 lead at half time.
The boyz were well lead with the forwards charging hard and young Daniel put in another powerhouse performance, the forwards were well backed up by the backs who were on the prowl for the footy.
Endeavour SHS ended the game the better of the two team and won 28 - 10
The opens played Hills SHS in the 1st game of this years University Shield and had a much harder game than their little brothers.
The Hills looked fantastic in their new while playing strip and played a very hard game that Endeavour had to scramble to try to get any control of the game.
With all the Endeavour kids screaming ENDEAVOUR during lunch, the home side lifted to level the scores at 16 - 16 late in the 2nd half.
But the Endeavour Boyz lifted their intensity and had the Hills backpeddling when Endeavour scored with seconds to win a really well spirited game of schoolboys rugby league ESHS 20 - 16 HILLS SHS
On Thursday Endeavour footy continues with 2 more game on the FIELD of DREAMS
The first game is the Under 13's and then a combined under 15/16's side take on the might of Matraville SHS

ENDEAVOUR TO PLAY HILLS @ HOME
On Wednesday 19 th March, ESHS host Hills SHS to kick off the 2008 season with the start of the University & Buckley Shields.
ESHS were beaten by Hills Sports in last years Semi's up at Laurie Breen oval, while the Buckley Shield were beaten by eventual winners Westfields.
But this is a new year, Endeavour have some new players which will blend in well with the teams with a couple years experience now. GO ENDEAVOUR!!
The elite schools Sevens competition got underway yesterday at GranVille Park with new comers Engadine and Ashcroft High Schools accounting for themselves very nicely.

The Under 15's final was an action packed game with the scores tied on 18 - all at full time forcing the final into extra time & sudden death.
Matraville scored the first points, a try to give them victory and the Champions title.
In the Under 13's final, Patrician Brothers Blacktown proved too strong for the south coast boys from Illawarra SHS.
