PARRAMATTA LEGEND HINDMARSH ON TROPHY DUTY

TO win one state title is a big achievement.

So when one school wins three state titles in the same year it makes people take notice.

Well, that's exactly what Westfields Sports high school did last week at the 69th annual NSWRL All Schools Knockout Carnival held across western Sydney.

The Fairfield West school dominated the Elite Secondary division of the tournament winning the under-13s, 14s and 16s divisions. They were also runners-up in the under-15s division.

The under-13s team were impressive in racking up a combined 98-4 total en route to the final where they defeated Hills Sports High 22 - 8.

The under-14s team were equally impressive as they reached the final without conceding a point before defeating Hills Sports High also in the final 10 - 4.

The under-16s team also managed to keep all their opponents to zero in the round robin phases and finished off the trifecta of victories with a hard fought 12-4 win against Patrician Brothers, Blacktown.

The under-15s team narrowly missed the clean sweep of the tournament losing to Patrician Brothers Blacktown, 18 - 0 in the final.

The school has now won 19 state titles in nine years.

More than 4000 school children from 200 schools competed in the three-day round robin tournament. It was the culmination of the competition which began with more than 25,000 junior players.

School footy kicked off today with the NSW CHS University & WC Buckley Shields. The Hills SHS had the day off as Hunter couldn't make up the numbers to play today, meanwhile.. .,

Illawarra SHS travelled up the highway to play Matraville SHS at Yarra and it will be a sad old trip south with both teams getting smashed, the Uni Shield Matto won 42 - 6 & the score in the Buckley Shaield was 56 - 6.

Big wins to both the Matraville Sports High School teams.

In todays 3 match up, Endeavour SHS played host to Westfields SHS at the Field of Dreams, Westfields prooved to good in the opening Uni Shield match running away to win by 10.

The U14's Buckley Shield match was a beauty with both teams very close for most of the game, only late in the 2nd half did Westfields storm home with some really good team points to win 14 - 32

ENDEAVOUR & HILLS BLAST IN UNI GRAND FINAL

Congratulations to all the University & Buckley Shield teams for making this years semi final of the NSWCHS University & Buckley Shields.

IN the 2nd Uni Shield Semi Final, both team were almost at full strength Endeavour were missing a few players due to exams and things, Australian schoolboys Cameron King & the in form Joey Leilua watched from the bench.

The Hills were missing 3 or 4 of there blokes, Jason Saege is in the NSWCHS Union side.

The Endeavour opens controlled the game enough to out play Westfields to score an exciting 30 - 6 victory and earn a place in the Grand Final against Hills who hammered a very under manned Matraville SHS 22 - 30.

Endeavour's Buckley Shield side will turn into a top footy side over the next couple years and held a pretty comfortable lead at half time in their battle with Hills SHS.

First half hero Alfred Seffo scored two beautiful tries for his team only to be countered in the second half by a 3 try blitzz to The Hills & ASSRL U 15 Merit team player Zac Clay tore up the middle of Henson Park to make the scores even at 22 - 22 as the siren blew full time.

The Hills were first to score in the sudden death extra time thrillfeast.

The Buckley Shield side went down bravely in the end allowing The Hills SHS to progress though to the Buckley Shield Grand Final against Westfields who were much too big and too good for a small Illawarra SHS side.

In the other Buckley Shield Semi Final, Westfields SHS put their hands up as one of the most successful rugby league schools in Australia.

Westfields Sports High School collected 2 more trophies for their already impressive 2009 trophy cabinet today winning both the Michael Buettner Shield & the Inaugural Chase Stanley Cup.

The Michael Buettner Shield (Under 13's) & the Chase Stanley Cup (Under 15's) are competitions involving only Elite High Schools in the Sydney & Hunter region of NSW.

This is the third Michael Buettner Shield and the Shield returns to Westfields for the second time.

CHASE STANLEY CUP
ENDEAVOUR SHS 6 - 32 WESTFIELDS SHS
HALF TIME : ESHS 0 - 10 WSHS
CONDITIONS : Perfect
CROWD : 250 - 300
PRICE of a PIE :

When Chase Stanley was first approached at the beginning of the year about holding the Chase Stanley Cup, "he thought it was a gee up" and today Chase was on hand to present to winning team the inaugural Chase Stanley Cup.

But things didn't quite go to script, his old school Endeavour Sport High School were in the Grand Final up against the NSWRL All School's under 15 Champions, Westfields Sports High School.

Westfields play good footy, they out musceled Endeavour and punched holes up the middle with strong performances from the forward pack, the Westfields backs are keen to follow the runners and this creates opportunities to score.

The first half was pretty even with Westfields running in tries to skipper Fraser Masinamua and Kelepi Tangaona to take a 10 - nil lead.

Endeavour came out with the right attitude in the second half attacking Westfield with purpose.

Endeavours forwards were once again well lead by Daniel Byrne and his cohorts. This lead to a nice backline move that got the ball to the speedy Souths Matty's Cup player Matthew Bateman who ran around to make it a better angle for his kicker, Endeavour go to six points after Anthony Saffo converts.

Westfields were good enough to hold out and defend their half for the rest of the game and started to take control.

Two second half tries to Cromwell Akokiri, further tries to Daniel Smith and Carlos Zopa put the Chase Stanley Cup out of Endeavours reach.

Congratulations to Westfields and Endeavour for making the Grand Final of the very first Chase Stanley Cup.

WESTFIELDS WIN MICHAEL BUETTNER SHIELD
ourfootyteam logo
Once again Westfields Sports High School have won the Michael Buettner Shield after smashing Endeavour Sports High School in the Grand Final at Henson Park.

The NSWRL All Schools Under 13's Champions were too hot for a young Endeavour out fit who tried mightly for the entire game only to be beaten by a better team on the day.

The real Michael Buettner fell for a dummy and was unavailable today, so the honour of presenting the Michael Buettner Shield to Westfields Sports went to current Australian Schoolboys player Jacob Miller.

Lots of effort was put into Thursday's Henson Park school spectactular and a man of the match mention should be made of Matraville's Director of Sport, Nadina Taskera. Well done Nadina!! & Roosters Toyota Cup champion Boyd Cordner who used his water bottle as a flag while running to sideline.

Promising pair...Frazer Masinamua and Gus Jasmin of Westfields Sports High School have dreams of playing in NRL. Photo: Steve Christo
NRL IS THE NAME OF THE GAME FOR THIS PAIR
Story & Photo By : Sydney Morning Herald
FRAZER MASINAMUA and Gus Jasmin are both 15 and not used to being interviewed.

But that doesn’t matter right now. What matters is that they can play. Yesterday, they were enjoying a big win with their under-15s teammates from Westfields Sports High School. In a few years, they hope to be able to celebrate breaking into the NRL.

Masinamua is a big boy. ‘‘I’m trying to lose 10 kilos,’’ he told the Herald during a break from play in the early rounds of the NSWRL All Schools Knockout at Whalan Reserve in western Sydney. ‘‘I want to get back to 100.’’

Yes, just 100 kilograms. He couldn’t run while recovering from a badly broken ankle suffered late last season. ‘‘I had a screw put through my ankle and today’s only my second game back,’’ he said.

Being so big makes Masinamua a constant threat on the field, as a back-rower who runs hard and has skill, and it makes him stand out off the field, where he says he is learning to take a deep breath to stay out of trouble.

‘‘I try to avoid trouble, but sometimes it’s a bit hard for me because I’m a big boy and it tends to find me,’’ he said.

‘‘I’ve walked away a few times, but it’s not easy. I’m still learning. I get my patience tested, but I have to learn to turn away if I’m going to succeed. I want to play NRL. It’s a long way away, but if I train hard I might be able to make it.’’

The most revealing – and refreshing – thing about these two kids is that they seem to get it when it comes to realising that if you want to make it these days, you need to behave just as well as you play. The game is playing hardball now with off-field offenders, and that is clearly the way it is going to stay.

Jasmin, a five-eighth who plays a year up in the under-16s Harold Matthews competition for the Bulldogs – Masinamua plays for Parramatta in the same comp – has also battled injury and off-field adversity. But he sees his goals, and the way to reach them, clearly.

‘‘Hopefully, one day, I’ll play NRL with the Bulldogs,’’ Jasmin said. ‘‘I’ve still got a long way to go, but I think I’m heading in the right direction. I’m training hard and I’m making sure I stay focused and keep away from trouble. I’ve been through a lot of injuries, but I’m not worried about that now.’’

GRANT FOR WESTFIELDS SPORTS HIGH SCHOOL

BETWEEN them, Westfields Sports High School and Cabramatta Rugby League Club have produced some of the finest rugby league talent this area has seen.

Krisnan Inu, Jarryd Hayne and Kris Keating, just to name a few.

And now that relationship is stepping up a notch with the leagues club announcing a $10,000 donation to help fund the high school's rugby league program.

With more than 50 percent of the school's players representing the Two Blues at club level on the weekend, the sponsorship deal can also be seen as an investment.

Westfields already use the leagues club grounds for training sessions but will now reap the rewards of further equipment and gear.

Rugby league is one of Westfields Sports High School's strengths and is set to strengthen even more now.

In the second half Westfields Sports kicked into gear completing sets and scoring some excellent tries.

A well rounded performance by WSHS with some very good defence by Kelepi and Fraser while Jordan and Daniel Daniec tackled everything that moved.

Outstanding performances by Jordan Latham, Josh Seuple, Guston Jasmin. Corey Makelim, Fraser Masinmua and Solomona Lemalie.

We now play Matraville Sports in the Grand Final in Week 10.”

St Dominic's College beat Westfields SHS 16-6 yesterday afternoon in their Arrive Alive Cup Tier A match played at the SFS after being ahead 10-0 at half time.

St. Dominics College showed their true school spirit and the faith shown by coach Barry Walsh to regroup in the second half to hold out a very good Westfields SHS footy team.

Westfields SHS are a strong side capable of putting on fast points against anyone, St. Dominics now go on to the next round of the National Arrive alive Cup.

RUGBY LEAGUE PLAYERS FOR SSW ZONE TEAMS

Westfields under 15s selected in the SSW team with Westfields Sports head coach Mr Wayne Lambkin.

The Opens were just as successful, they too had eight players selected for the SSW Opens Team with the ultimate prize of selection to the Australian School Boys team later in 2008.

There will be more new posted as it is received from the coaching staff.

There were some very gifted league players on show at East Hills on Monday 31st March 2008 when SSW selection trials were played at Smith Park.

The 15s had eight players selected (one missing from the photo) to represent at zone level with possible selection to the Sydney team and later in the year the chance of selection to the Australian merit side.

Westfields Sports has proved to be a wonderful nursery for the National Rugby League (NRL) with many former students currently in action on a weekly basis.

Players such as Eric Grothe Jnr, Jarryd Hayne, Krisnan Inu, Kris Keating, Matt Keating, Feleti Mateo at the Eels.

Michael Greenfield, Issac Luke with the Rabbitohs.

The SSW trial day was successful in identifying talented Rugby League players for their squads.

Coach, Greg Boulous, suggested that it also identified that “our Opens squad need to do a lot of work this year.

Our attitude and preparation were below par, which lead to a satisfactory performance for the team on the day.”
