FARRER GIVES MASTER CLASS IN SMASHING UNI SHIELD TRIUMPH

FARRER Memorial Agricultural High School’s third University Shield win was extracted with clinical precision at Cronulla’s Toyota Stadium yesterday.

The comprehensive 52-6 hiding of Sydney’s Eagle Vale High School was built on mistake-free football even though it was played in pouring rain.

“We knew that if they got a roll-on with their size and offloading ability, that we would really do it hard,” co-coach Steve Cavanagh said after the game.

“In the first half we were clinical.

“Someone said we didn’t make a single error which is amazing for any side, let alone in a final.

“In the second half they had a lot more ball and we had to do a lot of defence.

“But we were up to that too.

“The things that formed the basis for our success saw us through in the end.”

Farrer started on fire, with Matt Brady sliding over out wide for the first try before centre Matt Allwood crashed over down the same right-hand side.

It was 16-nil when prop and man of the match Toby Key charged onto a neat pass to score and 22-nil when Joh Mathers did likewise in similar fashion.

Farrer led 28-nil at the break after Jack Broughton followed Mathers’ effort with a try from the very next set of six and the green and golds went to the sheds buoyant.

The second half was tougher, with Eagle Vale threatening the Farrer line time and time again, only to be turned away.

The line finally broke and Shane Lalofagau scored for the Sydney side.

But normal service was resumed when John Brady finished off an Allwood break to make it 34-6, after Matt Brady landed possibly his best conversion out of the seven he booted in the game.

Further tries to Jack Pawsey and a diving effort from Angus Groves down the left-hand side pushed the lead out further and the final try was left to captain Ryan Pooley who raced 40m to seal a massive win before he and injured co-captain Cameron Rodgers lifted the trophy.

“It’s a huge day,” Cavanagh said.

“You have to remember these Eagle Vale players, a lot of them are Wests Tigers juniors and a lot are in sports programs.

“They’re used to having NRL support structures.

“So it’s a credit to our kids to dominate a side like that the way we did.

“Dane Pennell has to take a lot of credit because he’s the one in the gym with them every morning at 6 o’clock.

“Gus (co-coach Gus Comi), Dane and I work very well together.”

“It’s a very cohesive coaching unit.”

Key was rapt to be named man of the match and five-eighth Kyle Eather was player of the competition.

Kyle Eather - Player of the 2010 University Shield SeriesKyle Eather (left) has been a mainstay for us all year,” Cavanagh said.

“He’s an outstanding, dedicated footballer.

Toby Keys Uni Shield Grand Final, Man of the Match“And Toby Key (right) has gone from strength to strength.

“He ended up the most dominant front-rower on the field today and that was his aim so it was good to see him recognised for his effort.”

It was Farrer’s third and biggest win in the Uni Shield after success in 2003 and 2008.

RED BEND QUALIFY FOR FINALS
Forbes Advocate

Red Bend Catholic College has had two sides qualify for the Southern Rugby League Finals to be played at Cootamundra on July 29.

Red Bend coaches Todd Healey and Steven Hooper were both delighted with their sides' two wins.

“We’ve already got our Opens team into the Southern Final so it’s good for the school to have two sides in there.

“We were overall winners of the Opens last year so things are on track for a good end to the series,” Hooper said.

In their two games on Tuesday Red Bend defeated Dubbo South Campus 20-16 and then James Sheahan Orange 16-10 after Forbes led 16-0 midway through the second-half.

Country Cup results:

Previously, Red Bend claimed two out of three divisions of the Forbes round of the Country Cup contested in Forbes yesterday week.

Games were held at Red Bend and the local Catholic school claimed honours in both the under 13s and opens divisions.

The under 15s went to Condobolin High School.

The day saw sides from Red Bend, Condobolin High School, Cowra High School, Miller Technology High in Sydney, St Johns in Dubbo, James Sheahan, Kelso High School and West Wyalong High School gather to pit their skills against each other.

Games were shortened to two 15 minute halves and some top junior rugby league talent was on display.

Steve Hooper, rugby league convenor at Red Bend said he was “very happy, particularly with the 13s, they showed they’ve got a great little side.”

The under 13s travelled to Dubbo this week for the next round of the competition.

“The opens, we were very happy with how they went,” Hooper added.

Hooper said this was particularly the case with the side missing talented young Red Bend and Forbes Magpies under 18s half Blake Baxter.

The opens have 10 representatives in the Southern Country Catholic Schools side.

“They’re a very good side again this year,” Hooper said.

Red Bend under 15s also took to the field and acquitted themselves well despite the absence of multiple key players.

The Country Cup is a state-wide competition and rounds for our region have previously been held in both Dubbo and Blayney

HUNDREDS FLOCK TO CARNIVAL
Northern Daily Leader
ABOUT 800 primary school rugby league players took to the Minor League Park fields for the 62nd Peel Schools Rugby league Carnival last Saturday.

Today it’s the turn of another 800 or so older juniors to grace the Scully Park and Minor League Park fields in the Peel Schools Carnival secondary divisions.

Almost 60 teams are entered in the secondary divisions today, one of which is the Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School Under 13s.

Farrer coach Wayne Hunter was at Saturday’s Primary Peel Schools Day watching a nephew run around and was hopeful his Under 13s could continue a winning run.

At the recent Country Cup day in Tamworth the Farrer 13s beat Narrabri West 58-nil and Glen Innes 28-10 to earn a berth at the regional finals in Armidale.

“They’re a strong side across the board,” Hunter said.

“Normally with 13s you have four or five standouts but we’ve got a very good squad. We don’t lose anything when the reserves run on.”

Farrer is strong in the 13 age group too, with two sides playing in the local Tamworth Minor League. Hunter coaches the Gold 13s and Rob Arantz the Green 13s, with the talent being equally distributed among the two sides.

Peel Schools Carnival president Peter Blom was delighted with Saturday’s turnout when some 66 primary school sides took part.

Today 56 teams are entered with the Under 16 and Open divisions playing at Scully Park and the Under 13/14/15 age divisions at Minor League Park.

St Joseph’s College’s under-16 team swept all before it at the Gold Coast Titans challenge last week.
ST JOSEPH'S WINS CHALLENGE
Tweed Daily News

ST Joseph's College rugby league players had the right amount of ticker to claim top honours at the Gold Coast Titans under-16 challenge last Thursday at Ballina.

The event, in its second year, drew a field of 22 teams from across the North Coast.

Taking victory in the clusters were: St Joseph's College, Banora Point; Mt St Patrick College, Murwillumbah; and Kyogle High School and St Johns College, Woodlawn.

Each team participated in last Thursday's final, with St Joseph's maintaining its unblemished record to take the title.

St Joseph's sent 17 of its finest to play three matches and the results were impressive. In game one it beat Woodlawn 20-4, in game two it shut down Kyogle 16-8, and in the final game edged Mt St Patrick's 12-8.

The win over inaugural winner of the shield, Woodlawn College, was particularly impressive.

Titans players Gavin Judd, Jordan Atkins and Sam Meskill showed their support by attending the event.

The competition was organised by Country Rugby League and was sponsored by the Titans.

Country Rugby League development officer Mike Donnelly said he was impressed by the number of schools that had entered.

FARRER SIDES THROUGH TO NEXT STAGE OF CUP
Dubbo's Daily Liberal
FARRER Memorial Agricultural High School dominated the Tamworth Country Cup Under 13 and 15 Carnival at the new Minor League fields in Tamworth yesterday.

Farrer’s two sides will now go through to the regional Country Cup Carnival in Tamworth on June 16, said organiser Jamie McCormack.

“They won the 13s and the 15s – just a little bit too strong for the other sides today,” McCormack said.

“They’ll play in the regional carnival against the winners from Inverell, Armidale and Narrabri in Tamworth on June 16.

“McCarthy Catholic College, Peel and Tamworth High all had some good kids and a number of players who don’t normally play league as well. They said they enjoyed it and might, hopefully, play a bit more.”

Farrer’s Under 13s beat Peel 62-nil in the only Under 13 game while Farrer beat THS 24-8, McCarthy 36-4 and Peel 48-nil in their Under 15 clashes. McCarthy beat Peel 26-18 and drew 22-all with Tamworth High while Peel beat 18-16 in the other game.

Dan Mitchell coached the McCarthy Catholic College Under 15s and was delighted with their efforts.

“A win, a draw and a loss,” Mitchell said.

“They went well for their first games together. Farrer were too strong but our boys didn’t give up and they kept going. And they all walked off with a smile on their face. That was the main thing. It was also great to use these new grounds too.”

Luke Wiegold played in the second row for McCarthy and the Year 9 15-year-old was delighted with the win, loss and draw. He also plays for Collegians on Saturday’s as does Jaak Fisher.

However, he’s tipping a Queensland win in tonight’s first State of Origin, while Fisher is going for a NSW win.

A hooker or second rower 14-year-old Year 9 student Jaak Fisher said yesterday was a “great day, we played all right”.

Keeghan Faint plays for Collegians in the local Minor League but was ball boy yesterday.

“I’m not playing rugby league this year,” the 13-year-old Year 7 student said.

“Collegians couldn’t get a team so I’m playing rugby union on Friday nights and will play league again next year.”

CELTIC COLTS THRASHING FIRST OUTING
The Glen Innes Examiner
Glen Innes High School kicked off their School Boy Cup campaign in stunning fashion on Tuesday running away with the game against McIntyre High School 70 points to nil.

Sporting their brand new GATRL (Gifted and Talented Rugby League) guernseys, the Glen Innes Celtic Colts never gave the McIntyre side a chance to get in the game, scoring with nearly every possession.

Glen Innes Coach Richard Taylor said he was very pleased with his sides performance.

“We kept to our structure and game plan and made very few errors,” he said.

Man of the Match went to 16-year-old front row forward Sam Schiffmann, who proved very hard to bring down and made many barging runs up the centre of the field. Two points went to five eighth Tim Grob and one point went to young halfback Jay Smith Webster.

For some of the players on the Glen Innes side it was their first hit out in opens football and Taylor said he would like to congratulate those players.

“For their first game Louis Chapman-Burgess and Brock Green went really well.”

Glen Innes have two more games in the round robin section of the School Boy Cup, the first is against Inverell High in Inverell tomorrow at 1pm.

“We will have to play as well as we did on Tuesday, but we will also have to handle the pressure they put back on us,” Taylor said.

“The winner of our pool normally goes on to play Farrer seconds.”

MATER DEI SEALS LATE VICTORY IN HARDY SHIELD

HARDY SHIELD

TWO late tries allowed Mater Dei to seal a win in last night's Hardy Shield semi-final at Equex Centre and secure them a grand final berth.

The team managed to overcome a fierce Mount Austin attack in the final stages of the match to come out victorious.

Mater Dei coach Anthony Hood said he was delighted with how the team played.

"Yeah, very happy," he said.

"Our first-half completion rate was solid, but then we started to drop off towards the end of the first half.

"I was a bit disappointed with the end of our first half, but then we started well again in the second half.

"Our number six, Harrison Collins, was good with controlled kicks, as well as our number 11, James Blanchard."

Mater Dei was able to open the scoring ten minutes in, when Blanchard crossed on the back of some weak defence.

Impressive Mount Austin halfback Anthony Hackett then capitalised on an overlap on the wing to give the team a 6-4 lead at the break.

Just three minutes into the second half, Mater Dei winger Will Ryan went over in the corner.

Mount Austin then answered two minutes later with five-eighth Will Homer scoring a converted try to take the lead again.

Reigning premier Mater Dei then scored three unanswered tries, including two in the dying stages of the match to seal the win.

Mater Dei will now be looking to defend its title next Thursday night, when it takes on Wagga High in the grand final.

"We are looking forward to next week's match," said Hood.

"It will be the big rematch from last year, when we drew with Wagga High five-all in the third round.

"I think we will just be looking to complete our sets for the full half.

"We need to work on keeping our enthusiasm up and not drop balls."

The grand final will be played at 7.30pm next Thursday night at Equex Centre, while the other four teams will play off to decide next year's Hardy Shield draws.
HIGH SCHOOL'S FIRST LEAGUE HIT OUT
Glen Innes Examiner
The first results of Glen Innes High School’s new rugby league program will be on show tomorrow when the open’s team takes on Macintyre High School in the first round of the Schoolboys Cup (formerly Arrive Alive Cup).

Kicking off at the school at 1pm the new GATRL (Gifted and talented rugby league) guernsey’s will be unveiled for the first time.

GATRL Co-founder Ben Creighton said he was expecting a large crowd to turn up to watch the match. He said over the past few weeks the side had been working on new training strategies more in line with National Rugby League (NRL) clubs. Mr Creighton said it was the first time the side was playing together under the new program and it would be interesting to see the result.

“We have high expectations of this team,” he said. “It is a young side we only have three year 12 players but we expect that they will go a long way.”

Mr Creighton reccomended spectators kept an eye on the skillful half back five eight combination of Jay Smith-Webster and Tim Grob who will direct play around the field.

Meanwhile the Glen Innes Magpies A grade side had their first hit out during a trial match against the Tenterfield Tigers in Tenterfield on Friday night.

More than 30 senior players turned up for the match. Playing in wet weather the Magpies took control of the game early and never looked threatened. The Magpies easily won the match by six tries 26-20 but could have taken the game by alot more, allowing coaches to try out a number of players and positions.

MATER DEI TOASTS HARDY SHIELD WIN
The Daily Advertiser

Mater Dei Catholic College has stamped its authority on the 2010 Hardy Shield with a commanding 30-16 victory over Mount Austin High School.

In a re-match of last year's final Mater Dei last night came out on top against their fierce rival thanks to a dominant first half.

Down 16-nil at half-time Mount Austin struggled to break past halfway due to tight defence from Mater Dei.

Two late tries and a promising performance from fullback Luke Gladman were the only positives for Mount Austin.

Following a tense start, Mater Dei lock Jordan Shepherd stormed over the line to open the scoring for a six-nil lead, thanks to a Harrison Collins conversion.

Collins' kicking was a real feature of the Mater Dei game with precision, attacking passes to the corners keeping Mount Austin on the back foot.

Mater Dei coach Anthony Hood said set completion and goal-line defence was something the team was working hard on.

"We completed nine of 11 sets in the first half and combined with Harrison's kicking it allows us to keep teams pinned in their own half," he said.

Mount Austin opened the scoring in the second half to breathe new life into the game thanks to substitute Nick Salcole.

The try came after Mater Dei dropped the ball from the kick-off and then gave away a penalty, allowing Mount Austin to take advantage of consecutive sets.

However, that is where the joy stopped for last year's runners-up as Mater Dei ran in three tries to end the contest.

Daniel Maskill replied straight away as Mount Austin dropped the resulting kick-off before Shepherd and Collins ran in their second tries on the night.

The match was played in good spirits, the only blemish coming in the last five minutes when a Mater Dei player was accidentally spear tackled.

Mount Austin never gave up the game and some late fireworks from the exciting Gladman and Anthony Hackett improved the scoreline.

Hood said it was an excellent performance for a team's first game.

"They've gelled very well from the start, which is pleasing ... everyone got their hands on the ball and the crowd support was excellent," he said.

Mater Dei will now take on Kildare Catholic College on Monday at 7.30pm while Mount Austin will play The Riverina Anglican College.
KOORINGAL HIGH KICK OFF COMP BY DOWNING TRAC
The Daily Advertiser
Kooringal High School have started the Hardy Shield competition in the best way possible with a win over The Riverina Anglican College (TRAC).

In a tight match, the two teams traded tries until the end with Kooringal doing enough to secure the win 22-16 at Equex, last night.

TRAC had a chance to win in the dying stages after Kooringal kicked out on the full from a kick-off but couldn't breach the tryline.

Kooringal thought they'd secured victory when Vaughan Winnel scored a try in the last five minutes but TRAC were not done.

Andrew Madden scored to reduce the margin to six points but after a missed conversion TRAC were not able to challenge.

Kooringal's Macauley O'Malley scored two tries as five-eighth in a brilliant individual game while Lewie Bolton scored two for TRAC.

Halfback Aaron Wynne kicked two conversions for Kooringal as did TRAC fullback Shaun Kenaley.

The match was tight and physical throughout with each try coming after good lead-up work from the forwards.

Following the confidence-boosting win Kooringal will now face fellow round-two winners Wagga High School on Monday, while TRAC have the unenviable task of playing Mount Austin High School, who will look to rebound from a heavy defeat against Mater Dei.
WAGGA HIGH STUN KILDARE WINNING 26-4 WAGGA High School has kicked off their 2010 Hardy Shield campaign with an impressive 22-point thrashing of Kildare Catholic College last night.

It was a comprehensive victory for Wagga High, who scored two tries in the opening five minutes, led 16-nil at half-time and ran away to win 26 points to four.

After finishing third last year Wagga High looks ready to challenge heavyweights Mater Dei Catholic College and Mount Austin High School.

Fullback Kyle Philpott and centre Jesse Menz were everywhere for the winners, the pair putting on an impressive display and finishing with three tries between them.

Chris Kelly slotted three conversions to complete the win for Wagga High, who will now take on Kooringal High School on Monday.

The second half was a tighter contest but was marred by a number of dropped passes and stoppages.

Not a lot went right for Kildare last night - following a poor first half the team staged a spirited revival but could not withstand the class of Wagga High.

Brad Went scored the only try for Kildare on an otherwise miserable night.

It doesn't get any easier next week with Mater Dei Catholic College waiting in the next round.

ourfootyteam.com
Cameron King is a country boy come good in the big smoke. Hailing from the country he also brought his humble country work ethics and values and these have helped turn this boy from Wagga Wagga into one of the elite of Australian sport.

2009 was a dream year for young Cameron and we spoke to one of his coaches at Endeavour Sports High School, Mr Brad Kelly, who was kind enough to tell us some of Cameron’s achievements through 2009.

"Cameron arrived at Endeavour SHS in year 9 and he ended up staying at the school for 4 years.

"2009 was a pretty stellar year for him, he has probably achieved more this year than any other student who has gone through our rugby league program.”

"Cameron has been great in terms of his leadership qualities not just in the games - but at training and his attitude around the school", said Mr Kelly.

Some of Cameron’s achievements through 2009 include :

Cameron said he owed a lot to his biggest supporter, his Mum who has been there for him and gone through the highs and lows and dragged him around to games and training since he started playing footy at the ripe old age of 4.

President of the Australian Schoolboys Rugby League (ASSRL) Mr. Bruce Wallace couldn’t praise Cameron enough. "Cameron is the first rugby league player since Blake Green in 2004 to win the award. Just to be nominated for the Val Lembit Award is huge - and to win it is sensational.”

“It's a marvelous achievement seeing as Ian Thorpe one it twice in 1997 and 1998”, said Mr Wallace.

Below we have exclusively for ourfootyteam readers an interview with the man himself.
