CLASS OF 2007 EXCELLENT

AS one of the few targeted sports schools in Sydney, Endeavour Sports High expects a level of success. But, by any stretch, 2007 has proved quite phenomenal.

Last year, they received 12 Sydney East Blues, this year eight and four students will receive state CHS Blues - outstanding for any one school considering only about 62 Blues are awarded each year.

Best known in recent years for producing rugby league first graders from their champion Arrive Alive Cup (national competition) teams, Endeavour Sports High's program is now bearing fruit across the range.

Football players are now making their mark, joining league and union talent produced by the school.

Nick Tsattalios, aged 17 and with Sydney FC, has just completed his HSC and recently became the youngest player competing in the national A-League football competition.

Alex Jovanovic, an Australian Schoolboys representative, will be touring the UK over Christmas for schoolboy internationals.

Marc Warren, also a Sutherland Football Club junior, captained the Australian Schoolboys Joeys (U17s) on the recent tour of Asia, scoring in their recent win over Malaysia.

Teresa Polias, younger sister of good golfer Marousa Polias, represented the Young Matildas and she will be playing for the NSW Institute in an all-girls team in the elite boys' premier league.

And George Strogylos, an Australian Schoolboys Rep, is playing for Sydney Olympic.

In other sports, possibly the most well known is St George Illawarra's Chase Stanley, who made his first-grade debut this year and also went on the tour of the UK and France with the New Zealand side. The 18-year-old scored two tries in his Test debut on Saturday, although New Zealand again lost to Great Britain.

Then there are other young stars, like ...

Cronulla Baseball Club's star pitcher Michael Lennox, who has earned a contract with the famous Boston Red Sox club in the US. A 2008 Australian Schoolboys rep with the NSW Institute of Sport, he captained the Australian Schools baseball team on their successful tour of the US and Canada, the young Aussies winning 15 out of 18 games.

Michael leaves the shire in February to join the Red Sox, baseball's recent World Series winners;

Australian Schoolboys Rugby reps like Sam Latunipulu and Micah Watene, also the vice-captain of Endeavour Sports High School who recently represented Australia in Tests against Fiji and New Zealand;

Abbey McCulloch, the Australian Schools Netball rep and sister of champion young track cyclist Kaarle McCulloch, won Australian titles in 2007 and she is the NSW vice-captain; and

Bridey Delaney, the champion St George athlete who has won and placed in state and national middle distance events.

Dave Davids, director of sport, said the major focus at Endeavour was on learning, not just on sport.

He points to the school's dedicated staff and the flexible timetable catering for sporting programs which has helped produce so many young champions of late.

"Michael Lennox is a great example," he said.

"He's spent little time at school because of being overseas a lot of time away but [is] managing to do well at baseball and his studies." | BACK TO YOUR FOOTY NEWS | HOME |

MARSDEN SHS V ENDEAVOUR HIGH

On Thursday the 18th October Marsden SHS Played Endeavour High School.

Endeavour Ran out winners 4 tries to 1.

The game was dominated by some very big shots in defence.

Jarred Cherrington (Endeavour) was the pick of the visitors with some bone crunching defence and Joseph Rokoqo , Joseph Leilua (Endeavour) where a handful in attack with many offloads and strong runs resulting in some good tries.

Marsden were right in the game until the last few minutes when Endeavour got 2 quick tries.

The best for Marsden where Jarrod Parsons , Dylan Mitchell and Marley Wight.

Marsden would like to thank the Boys from Endeavour for coming all the way up to Brisbane.

I hope you guys had a good time while you were here. | VIEW TOUR PHOTO GALLERY |

The game against Marsden was a very physical encounter which saw mighty Endeavour SHS come up trumps again with a good 20 - 4 victory.

The game was a 3 X 15 minute periods.

Marsden SHS is a good footy school and they have some really good players, like Israel Falou's little brother & are well coached by Kim Bray and his team.

Israel Falou was at his old school to watch his old school team & Izzy was good enough to have his photo taken with the Endeavour boys.

Endeavours' young open rugby league staged an amazing comeback in the University Shield Final at the Morrie Breen Oval Wyong today.

By half time Hunter had a commanding lead to be 24 - 6, and it looked like the uni shield was slipping away for this year.

Endeavour coach Jeff Hardy was quiet addressing his team during the break and reminded the boys of what they and the school is about.

It was a very pumped up Endeavour in the second half and really showed why they are one of the best school footy team in the country by completing their sets of six and and with the final siren it was 32 - all.

It was decided to play an extra 5 minutes each way, rather than play the Golden Point which was a pity as Endeavour scores a great try in the right hand corner to make the score 36 - 32.

Both team continued to pile on the points until the end of the game where Hunter held on to a slight lead to win 38 - 42.

The 2nd half was hot boys, well done ( - more photo's Thursday | Uni Shield | Buckley Shield | )

A new era has dawned on the coveted Arrive alive Cup with both last years National Finalists Keebra Park who were defeated last week by Palm Beach Currimbin & now Endeavour SHS have been eliminated from the 2007 Competition.

Endeavour Sports High and Hills Sport High battled it out in the Arrive Alive Cup which turned out to be an absolute thriller that was won by Hills Sports in the dying minutes 20 – 18 which destroyed Endeavours chance of winning the Arrive Alive Cup 4 years in a row.

Endeavour came out on fire with two quick tries in the first 20 minutes at Oki Stadium.

Hills struck back with a try under the sticks. Endeavour lead going into the sheds at half time 12 – 6.

Hills struck back in the second half scoring two unconverted tries to make it 14 – 12 Endeavours way.

After about 20 minutes of play Hills scored once more and converted with a great kick extending the score to 20 – 12.

Then with pure desperation and heart Endeavour’s 2nd rower scored and brought the score to 20 – 18 but unfortunately Endeavour couldn’t capitalise and Hills got the win they deserved.

Although Endeavour had many year 10 and 11 players for them due to injury they played really well.

CENTRES OF ATTENTION

ENDEAVOUR Sports High student Chase Stanley became the youngest St George Illawarra NRL player when he made his debut in round two this year at OKI Jubilee Stadium against Newcastle.

Then 17, he also scored a try with his first touch in NRL football and he's made a habit of scoring ever since, including in the Dragons' return clash with the Knights in Newcastle on the weekend.

Chase certainly has good bloodlines.

His uncle is the famous All Black outside back, ``Smokin'' Joe Stanley, who knew how to find the line.

Chase's older sister Kyrsty represented Australia in karate at the age of 12, winning the state karate championships four years running.

Chase and his four brothers Kyle, 16, Jamie, 14, Mutu, 9, and Reremoana, 7 have starred in junior league for Hurstville United in various grades, with Kyle training with the Dragons' Premier League squad, before undergoing a leg operation recenly.

Chase, managed by longtime family friend Lance Thompson, the Sharks and former Dragon star, was ``surprised'' at the size of his new contract and is grateful to the Dragons.

``I have learnt so much from the experienced guys like Ben Hornby, Mark Gasnier, Matt Cooper and Rylsey (Jason Ryles),'' Chase said.

``As a local junior I always wanted to play NRL for the Dragons and I didn't expect it to come so soon. It has been exciting and a great experience.''

Stanley said combining HSC studies with NRL football and training had been ``tough.''
``But the teachers at Endeavour have really helped me a lot,'' said Chase, who manages to train three days a week most weeks.

``I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given. Now I just want to play the rest of the year consistently.''

Dragons chief executive Peter Doust has been impressed by the youngster.

``The way he has handled the transition to NRL football has been great, especially given that he has combined this with his final year of school,'' Doust said.

Dragons coach Nathan Brown was equally pleased to have extended Chase's contract to 2010.

``Chase has definitely got a big future ahead of him if he continues to keep working hard and applying himself as he has done this year,'' Brown said.

``Our plan at the start of the year was to play him in Premier League but he really impressed us in the off-season when he joined the full-time squad after Christmas.

``His efforts in the pre-season, combined with some early-season injuries, gave him his opportunity in the NRL where he has been outstanding, especially considering his age.'' LEARN MORE ABOUT ENDEAVOUR SHS

Chase Stanley
Born to run ... Chase Stanley
CHASE THE SMOKIN' DRAGON
WHO is Chase Stanley?
Story By : smh
We know he is a 17-year-old schoolboy, and one of the most exciting rugby league prospects in the land. He is the nephew of former All Blacks centre "Smokin" Joe Stanley.

We knew little else of the prodigious Dragons and NSW under-19 talent. Through a peep-hole of four first-grade games, he has shown us exhilarating future possibilities, but as his father Paul Stanley explains, the young man himself is still discovering who Chase Stanley is.

"He has been on this earth all of 17 years, he knows everything," Paul says with parental sarcasm. "Chase has had to grow up quite quickly because he is playing in the NRL, but you have to remind him that he is 17 years old. He has to still be in touch with being a teenager and enjoy himself at this phase of his life."

Chase is the second eldest of six children, the eldest of five brothers, born in Bankstown Hospital to working-class parents. His mother, Michele, is from proud league stock, with her grand-uncles Rangi and Tommy Chase representing New Zealand in the 1930s. Chase was christened with his mother's maiden name, and is a distant relative of Dragons teammate Rangi Chase.

"He has a pretty wise head on his shoulders, he is pretty mature," Rangi Chase says. "I'm just really happy for him. Being a young guy he has a lot of big wraps on him, but he handles it all."

The bright lights of professional sport are shining on him now, but the family's world was plunged into darkness 10 years ago when Paul, a former construction manager, nearly lost his life after falling from a worksite building.

"I fell two storeys, and then I got up and my mate drove me home, I didn't go to the hospital," says New Zealand-born Paul. "I had a bath, but it started getting worse, and then I started spewing up this gooey blood - basically I was haemorrhaging. When I got to the hospital the doctor told Michele I'd be lucky to make it through to the next day."

Chase was eight, not ready to assume man-of-the house status, not wanting to try. "It was a pretty scary time at the time, we were very young," Chase says. "Dad talked to us, told us to be strong."

Fate had a different course in store for the Stanleys. Paul survived, albeit with the stipulation he would never work again, while his daily ritual includes the intake of five tablets - gradually reduced from 30 - to manage the pain of compressed fractures along his spinal column.

"That made him realise that it is the little things in life that matter," Paul says. "I always tell my children, you can dream about the big stuff but it will never happen unless you do the little things right - being a good person, doing the right things at training and at home - the little things are basic everyday occurrences.

The advice, which the Stanley children refer to as "nagging", seems to have rubbed off despite a few adolescent indiscretions. Chase's manager and mentor, Sharks forward Lance Thompson, says: "I have never seen a bloke more passionate about his friends and family. Even though he is in first grade he will always go to watch his little brothers play. He has a positive attitude, he is just a ball of energy, and it's starting to rub off on me."

Thompson spotted Chase when he was 10 years old playing for the Clemton Park-based Dragons club in the Canterbury district, and persuaded the youngster to join the side he was coaching, Hurstville United under-10s. Chase's brothers Kyle, Jamie, Mutu and Reremoana all joined the club. Three years later, Chase (under-13s), Kyle (under-11s) and Jamie (under-9s) each won man-of-the-match awards as they led their sides to grand final victories on the same day.

"From the first day he came to training I thought to myself, 'This is a ready-made footballer'," Thompson says. "But talent is a dime-a-dozen, there are a lot of kids with talent, it's how they use it. He has had a few hurdles here and there, making mistakes that teenagers do - everyone has done it, I have done it. Not only this year, but last year in SG Ball when he was getting into a little bit of trouble, we sat down and worked out how we were going to deal with it and get over it, and he did. He is a very respectful, polite young kid."

Thompson, a former Dragons player, credits Chase for inspiring him to become a player manager and role model to some of the most talented youths in the Shire who are now part of his client list. "The first pay cut I took at St George was $10,000 and that was to donate money to kids in the area, and he was the main reason for that. He was definitely an inspiration, he was the first player that got me thinking about [player management]."

Chase has been dealt some favourable cards, and knows he must play them wisely because the game has only begun. "I am glad to be playing, I'm thankful for the opportunity," he says.

And each time he touches the ball, he wants to tell the world: This is Chase Stanley.

DRAGONS FIRE PUTS HEAT ON ELLIOTT
Daily Telegraph
TWO-TRY St George Illawarra centre Matt Cooper revealed he struggled to concentrate and felt physically ill as he braved a serious bout of concussion to help the Dragons to their second win of the season last night.

Penrith coach Matthew Elliott told a post-match media conference he felt like he was "in the desert, surrounded by vultures" – he complimented reporters on their wings – after the return of Dean Young and strong showings from rookies Chase Stanley and Jason Nightingale helped the Dragons win and left the Panthers stranded on four competition points.

Cooper, ruled unfit for Country Origin selection due to a bad head knock on Anzac Day, said he still didn't know if he would play even when he arrived at OKI Jubilee Stadium last night.

"I was still a bit dusty out there, I just couldn't concentrate on things that well," said Cooper, who blasted back into NSW selection favouritism.

"Coming in at halftime, I felt a bit crook. I felt like throwing up but I went back out and tried to help the team win. That was the main thing. "In the end, I'm glad I played.".. Learn More

10/02 CONGRATULATIONS to PATRICIAN BROTHERS COLLEGE Blacktown for winning the Elite High School's Arrive Alive 7's Competition Shield on Friday.

Patrician Brothers ran away the 2007 Champions after a flurry of late tries over defending 2006 Arrive alive Seven's winners Endeavour Sports High School to win the Elite Schoolboys Arrive Alive Seven's 32 - 10.

The Arrive Alive Seven's Plate was closely won by Westfields Sports High School who outlasted Hunter Sports High School to seal victory in the final 2 seconds of the final.

Today's competition was shortened with The Hills Sports High School pulling out because they couldn't play their Harold Matty's Cup or SG Ball players in the comp.

Endeavour SHS were told on Wednesday by NRL clubs St. George/Illawarra, Souths and the Roosters that none of their contracted players could play in the schoolboys Arrive Alive Seven Tournament. St. Dom's didn't have their junior reps players either.

What a fantastic display of schoolboys footy we all saw today with both grounds being used at Western Weekender Stadium again for the conclusion two days of intence, exciting and fast paced seven's schoolboys rugby league.

There are some very skillful young players running around in the NSW school systems this year, which is good news, as NSW will want to put in a better effort than last year's when Queensland clean swept of all the interstate schoolboys comps and knockouts .. Learn More
