SEXTON AND WALKER A POTENT HALVES DUO FOR AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLBOYS

The Australian Schoolboys will unleash two of the most promising young halves in the game when they clash with the Junior Kiwis at Dolphin Stadium on Sunday.

Sam Walker, son of former NRL star Ben Walker, will partner Toby Sexton in the halves with the duo set to complement each other to perfection.

Sexton, a Palm Beach Currumbin [PBC] High product formerly contracted to the Canterbury Bulldogs, has just signed a long-term deal with the Gold Coast Titans while Walker is off to the Sydney Roosters next year on a two-year deal.

Walker, who attends Ipswich Grammar School, met with coach Trent Robinson and star five-eighth Luke Keary before making his decision to leave the Brisbane Broncos system where the ethos of the club best fitted in with his own philosophies on the game.

Queensland Under 18 assistant coach Brad Davis, who is also a teacher at PBC and set to move up to coach the Open A side next season, said the duo would complement each other in the halves for the Australian Schoolboys.

"Toby has just signed for three years with the Titans and he has got to this level because of the amount of dedication he has put into the last five years. His success is all on the back of hard work," Davis said.

"He has an outstanding kicking game and is level headed. You talk about game management and that is Toby all over.

Sam Walker is super skilful and understands the game really well"Sam is super skilful and understands the game really well. If there is half an opportunity you can guarantee that he will be calling for the ball and chancing his arm."

The Junior Kiwis are also blessed with quality halves with New Zealand Warriors duo Paul Turner and Sione Moala set to cause plenty of headaches of their own.

"Sione Moala is 17, turning 18 this year, and will play in the seven jersey. The Warriors have a big wrap on him,” Junior Kiwis coach Ezra Howe said.

"Our other half is Paul Turner who was the Sonny Fai Medallist and is currently in the Warriors' top squad. He played Canterbury Cup this year. The good thing is that we probably have around 14 players who played in the Canterbury Cup competition this season."
Match: Schoolboys v Junior Kiwis

The Junior Kiwis have plenty of strike and will play Starford Toa at fullback. Toa made his NRL debut for the Newcastle Knights this year and, in a bizarre twist, has also previously represented the Australian Schoolboys in the past.

The back-row confrontation looms as a cracker with PBC enforcer Brendon Piakura lining up alongside Melbourne Storm signing Jack Howarth for the Australian Schoolboys.

Davis also has big wraps on that pair as well.

"Brendon is new to PBC and is a really threatening back-rower and damaging defender. He can cut people in half," Davis said.

"He is also really smart with his line running and vision. Alongside him Howarth is a dynamic back-rower with a lot of speed and he will be very hard to handle. Jack is a growing every day and I am sure the Storm will develop him into a strike back-rower."

The Junior Kiwis have plenty of strike of their own in the back-row. Roosters-contracted Christian Tuipolutu will line up alongside Charbel Tasipale who Howe said had an outstanding season with Parramatta in the Jersey Flegg competition.
jack Howarth Ready To Rumble For Australian Schoolboys HOWARTH READY TO RUMBLE FOR AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLBOYS

Story By : Andrew McKaysmith Australian Schoolboys contributor

Jack Howarth need only to look towards his family to know how special it is to represent the Australian Schoolboys.

His father cried when he was told Jack would make his international debut against the New Zealand u19s at Redcliffe this Sunday.

“My dad shed a few tears when I told him and I did too,” Howarth said.

“I wouldn’t be where I am without my dad, he works endless hours for me to play the sport and get me everywhere, same with my mother. It couldn’t have happened without them.”

Rugby League is the winner as imposing second-row forward Jack Howarth prepares to make his international debut against New Zealand this Sunday.

Horwarth is a Year 11 student at Brisbane Boys College, a GPS school and noted rugby union nursery that has produced Wallabies Will Genia, James Horwill and a trove of other test players.

The decision to fend-off career prospects with the Queensland Reds and Wallabies, then sign a contract with the Melbourne Storm is endorsed by an unlikely source close to home.

'What a weapon!' - Jack Howarth

"My coach at BBC has been very supportive of what I am doing," Howarth said.

"I'm fortunate that he is, because in the past people haven't been able to do what I've done; he's a great mentor, and he puts a lot of time and effort into my training.”

Horwarth’s comments reference BBC's 1st XV coach Shane Drahm, an exceptional fly half who played for the Reds before achieving two English test caps in 2006.

Commitments to his studies, the school’s 1st XV and Easts Tigers in the Mal Meninga Cup mean the young forward sticks to a demanding schedule.

The Storm made an offer for him to join them in Melbourne this year, however his parents felt staying in Brisbane was best until he has completed year 12, giving him the option of tertiary education alongside his athletic pursuits.

"I've done a few captain’s runs with the Storm, and I have joined them for an opposed session," Howath said.

"I went down to a two-week camp in Geelong where they pulled me in for a defensive session, Dale Finucane was throwing me around, but he really looked after me."

Howarth has enjoyed his time with his Australian teammates at Royal Pines on the Gold Coast this week.

While he was victorious in Queensland Under 18 team, representing Australia has long been the goal and now it is a career highlight.

"We're all enjoying ourselves in the environment," Howarth said.

“It’s an honour to be here.

“I might shed a few tears when the national anthem plays, I’m really excited.

“I have a lot of pride in my football, so I want to show that for my country through my performance on Sunday.”

NEW ZEALAND 18s OUT-CLASSED BY AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLBOYS

The New Zealand 18s were out-classed by a slick Australian Schoolboys side, 40-8, in their match-up at Trust Arena in Auckland this afternoon.

In a game that promised to be a physical one, the boys from across the ditch snatched their second victory of the week, but this time, blew the scoreboard wide open.

Auckland’s wet conditions came to the party bringing countless knock-ons to both sides and handling errors that made for a slow start.

It was looking like the New Zealand 18s would score 20 minutes into their encounter after a knock-on from an under pressure Australian team, but the over-eager New Zealanders came up short inches from the try-line.

After 27 minutes of painstaking back and forth, the Australian Schoolboys came up with the first try of the match when a missed tackle from the New Zealanders cost them. A conversion to Zac Lomax, the Australian centre who went into the game with a 100 percent success rate at goal from Tuesday night’s clash, took the Australian Schoolboys out to a 6-0 lead.

The sheer speed of the visitors’ play the balls had them gaining 40 metres with a tackle count of only three, and it was that quick pace which brought in the Australian second-rower, David Fafita, for his first try of the match. The score would remain at 10-0 – Zac Lomax’ first and only missed conversion of their two-match campaign.

Just as halftime was looming, the NZ 18s scored their first try with winger, Mawene Hiroti, crossing the line on the right wing – the NZ 18s go into the changing rooms trailing by 10-4.

Refreshed and ready for another 40 minutes, the New Zealanders came out firing. Their second try came when they capitalised on their opposition’s dropped ball with captain, Dylan Tavita, scoring just right of the post.

However, the captain didn’t manage to convert his own try falling short of levelling the scoreboard – 10-8.

The New Zealand 18s may have closed the gap, but give the Australians an inch and they’ll take a mile. That’s exactly what they did as Tanah Boyd went in for his second try of the game which was then converted by Zac Lomax extending their lead to 16-8. Boyd would go on to earn himself MVP of the Australian Schoolboys side.

Then came David Fafita’s second try. NZ found themselves struggling to read the play as Fafita received a fantastic cut from Boyd slipping through an absent defense taking the score to 22-8 after another successful Lomax conversion.
Australia’s next try went much the same way set up by an outstanding grubber from the classy, Tanah Boyd which was taken across the line by Jesse Cronin. Lomax converting the try to make it 28-8.

As the New Zealand missed tackle count increased, the Australians took full advantage with a further three more tries on the board, all successfully converted by Zac Lomax.

Rewarded for their never-ending forward momentum, the Australian Schoolboys took home an impressive win with seven tries to two and a score of 40-8. Australian co-captains, Zac Lomax and Campbell Graham, credited their successful camp for their victory.

“We’ve had a really good camp with incredible coaching staff which put us in an ideal place,”
“It was a tough game, their line speed was fast and aggressive but all credit to our boys – we got the job done,” they said.

New Zealand 18s captain, Dylan Tavita, said “it was a great arm wrestle in the first 40 minutes but in the second half, fatigue really got to us and we lacked discipline.”

The Australian Schoolboys return home with two wins to nil over New Zealand 18s and New Zealand 18s Select.
