WA REDS TAKE ON FIRST GRADE GRAND FINALISTS
warugbyleague.com.au
The WA Reds SG Ball squad will play a trial this Saturday afternoon against first grade grand finalists the Central Bulldogs at Ken Allen Field, Hilton.

Along with Saturdays trial against the Bulldogs the Reds will also play the Fremantle Roosters first grade side the following Saturday as the final trial before their round 1 clash with the Balmain Tigers at ME Bank Stadium.

Coach Andrew Korn has deliberately matched his side against their older rivals in a bid to see how the handle it. “We need to see how our boys can stand up against bigger, stronger and faster players like we will encounter when the competition begins.”

With former WA Seniors and Bundy Cup players in both first grade sides the Reds will be tested. “We have a lot to prove in the SG Ball competition with the majority of our players not having experienced this next level of football. They need to be tested against the Bulldogs and Roosters and I am confident they will pass.” Coach Korn added.

One further cut to the 30 man squad will be made after Saturday’s trial to trim the squad to 25 members who will make up the inaugural WA Reds SG Ball Squad.

RAIDERS CONFIRM 33 PLAYERS TO VISIT RIVERINA

On Monday 8 February 2010, all available members of David Furner's NRL Squad will descend on the Riverina region as part of the NRL's Community Carnival Program.

On the Monday, players and staff will stop off in Gundagai, Adelong and Tumut to visit school children in the classroom before travelling on to Wagga where they will camp down for a few days at Kapooka Army Base.

Whilst in Wagga, the Raiders Squad will attend a Men of League function at the Blamey Barrack's on the Monday evening and complete a mass blitz of Wagga schools on the Tuesday. Junior rugby league clubs will be at the EQUEX Sports Centre on the Tuesday afternoon as Furner and his other coaches run the team through a training session.

On Wednesday the Squad will return home but before doing so will stop off in Junee, Cootamundra, Illabo and Tumbarumba to rub shoulders with more school children.

Trish Crews, Director of Community Relations for the NRL, praised the efforts of the Raiders and their involvement in what will be a big week for Rugby League.

“We have over 500 players and staff participating in the Community Carnival which is a brilliant opportunity for players to get out in to the community and to also promote our message of Eat Well Play Well Stay Well and the sport of Rugby League” Crews said.

“It will be a huge week for the game and I’m really thrilled that the Raiders have embraced the Community Carnival and are going to be such a massive part of the week in the Riverina area” she continued.

The 33 players attending the three day visit to the Riverina will be:
Andrew Edwards Brett Kelly Bronson Harrison
Cy Lasscock Dane Tilse Daniel Vidot
Danny Galea David Milne David Shillington
Drury Low Glen Buttriss James Stuart
Jarrad Kennedy Jarrod Croker Joe Picker
Joel Monaghan Josh Dugan Josh McCrone
Josh Miller Josh White Justin Carney
Marc Herbert Matthew Ward Michael Brophy
Mick Picker Nick Skinner Reece Robinson
Sam Mataora Scott Logan Shaun Fensom
Terry Campese Trevor Thurling Troy Thompson

Early next week the Raiders will be contacting media to arrange an opportunity to speak to members of the Raiders top squad who originate from the Riverina and will be returning to their local areas for the Community Carnival.

JUNIOR MAGPIES START TRAINING
Forbes Advocate
The Forbes Rugby League Club under 18s return to training next Tuesday.

New under 18s coaches Adam Hall and Ben Gunn have announced their plans for the coming season and they are urging anyone thinking of strapping on an under 18s jumper to come for a look.

“For February we’d just like to see those intending to play turn up for a few runs,” Hall said.

“We’d just officially invite all the young blokes out there to simply come for a few soft runs and drills, even if they’re not intending to play.”

Gunn said the initial training sessions will be light.

“As with all February training, the boys have summer sports to complete, some are settling back into school and others are beginning new apprenticeships.

“It’s important that the boys focus on that firstly and we’ll get a bit more serious as the season progresses.”

The pair are taking a slightly different approach to the coaching role this season.

“We’ll go on the record now, the under 18s will be different than previous years, we have a strategic full-year program put in place and it involves many ideas to create an enjoyable atmosphere,” Hall said.

“We want young blokes to find it a pleasure to turn up and play Maggie under 18s.”

Just one of the ways the pair are mixing things up is through the introduction of mentors.

The pair have approached senior Magpies from years gone by and requested their input and assistance with the junior side.

They say there will be a focus on professionalism in areas such as defence, offensive drills, fitness, game plans and a focus on achieving goals.

Forbes has long been a strong under 18s side due to the town boasting two junior rugby league clubs.

Hall and Gunn will lay the foundation for future under 18s success by giving under 16s players an early introduction to a senior rugby league club.

The pair said interest in the 2010 under 18s side has already been strong.

“We’ve received an excellent response from young guys letting us know of their intention to play under 18s,” Gunn said.

“We’re confident of a good year on and off the paddock…” Training will take place at Spooner Oval next Tuesday.
TYSON FRIZELL SIGNS WITH THE SHARKS
TYSON FRIZELL SIGNS WITH THE SHARKS
TYSON FRIZELL SIGNS WITH THE SHARKS

The Cronulla Sharks have signed promising Australian Rugby Union Schoolboy, Tyson Frizell, for the 2010 season.

The 18-year-old was first noticed by one of the Cronulla Sharks scouts and only recently returned from the Schoolboys tour of Ireland and United Kingdom earlier this month.

“The Sharks are extremely pleased to have Tyson Frizell sign with the club,” Toyota Cup Head Coach Joey Grima said.

“He brings size, speed and from all observations an incredibly high skill level. As an 18-year-old he also displays great maturity and his willingness to learn the game of rugby league is evident.”

“He also has versatility where he can play centre, wing, fullback or in the back row and I’m really looking forward to working with him over the next 12 months and developing him into a potential NRL player.”

Frizell who attends Illawarra Sports High School was a standout in rugby union having being selected in the CHS team, NSW Schools and ultimately the Australian Schoolboys.

The cross code desperately wanted to keep the talented youngster, with the NSW Waratahs extremely interested, but it is with the Sharks that Tyson feels he can really make a breakthrough.

“I was given the opportunity to come to league and play with the Sharks and it’s something different and a new challenge and I’m always up for new challenges,” Frizell said.

“With the position I play in union, I saw myself maybe fitting into league a lot easier… I can play in the centres and also as an edge back rower.”

“I’m looking forward to playing against some of the young guns coming through the ranks and really testing myself.”

Click here to view the Sharks TV Junior Representatives video.

Hoping to eventually follow in the footsteps of Blake Ferguson, Nathan Stapleton and the likes, Frizell is looking to knuckle down at training and learn the trade before he sets his sights on an NRL birth.

“I’m not too familiar with what happened, but I’ve heard how some of the younger guys made it through to the NRL after school and I hope that later on that may happen to me.”

“But I’m just looking to cement a spot in the starting side every week. That’s what my main focus is at the moment and I’m not really worrying about where I came from, I'm just trying to work hard at training.”

“I was off training for a while and wondering what I was going to do but now I’ve put pen to paper my main focus is league and doing well for the Sharks.

Tall and well built, Frizell has already started training with the NYC squad and will play in the NYC first trial match against Manly on February 12.

“It’s been really good training with Joey (Grima).”

“He’s been great in trying to help me learn the skills base in rugby league and I haven’t really had the chance to train with Ricky but hopefully if I train well enough, then an opportunity might come up down the track and I might get a shot at having a few training sessions with them.”
TIGERS TAME BULLDOGS
Balmain’s Harold Matthews squad dominated the Bulldogs in their recent trial last Friday night.

The Tigers tackled the Bulldogs out of the game winning 6 tries to 2. All is on track for a bumper year for the Tigers as they were impressive all over the park.

The Bulldogs struggled to break the relentless Balmain defensive line, while the Tigers were unlucky not to post a few more 4 pointers.

This side is made up from mostly local juniors with only 4 or 5 players from out of the district, they are great mates off the field and really do work hard for each other on the field.

Their commitment on the field is what stands out and they still have room for improvement, get out and support this talented team you Tiger supporters you’ll really enjoy watching them play.

They finish off their Pre Season with a trial against the Bunnies on Friday 29th Jan at TG Milner 5pm kick off. Souths will be out for revenge after the Tigers beat them in an earlier trial before Xmas.

ALL EVEN AT TORONTO

The Newcastle Knights have defeated the Parramatta Eels in an SG Ball trial at Toronto this evening.

They had four seasons in one day up there with 40 plus weather turning into gale force winds and rain.

In the first game the Knights won five trys to four while in the second game Newcastle got the money three trys to two.

It should be noted the Eels rested up to ten players for next weeks trial against Illawarra.

In Harold Matthews it was a completely different story with the Eels smashing the Knights ten trys to nil.

CHECK OUT LAST YEARS SG BALL GRAND FINAL ACTION
MELBOURNE STORM 2010 SG BALL PREVIEW
Story BY : Kim Williams Head Coach
Reaching the Grand Final in our first year of the national under-18 competition was an amazing achievement for the 2009 Melbourne Storm SG Ball team, but now there is a new group of young players who are highly motivated to go one better in 2010.

A squad of 40 enthusiastic young players have commenced training with the Melbourne Storm in preparation for the 2010 National Under-18’s SG Ball competition.

These players have already completed an initial eight week introductory phase in August and September, and they have now settled in to the weekly grind of pre-season training leading up to Christmas.

Competition for places in the final squad of 25 is extremely hot as these players know only the most committed and disciplined players get the opportunity to represent the Melbourne Storm.

There are six local players who are backing up for a 2nd year with the SG Ball squad and their experience will be invaluable to the team.

Players like Matt Constantinou, Jerome Henry, Herschel Gideon and Cameron Hansen will have benefited greatly from playing in last year’s successful team and they will be expected to share their knowledge and experience with the new boys in the squad.

There are also some exciting younger players training with the squad who will push strongly for starting positions once the final team is selected in February.

These players include local boys such as Tala Titi and Adam Millgate who both excelled for the Victorian Under-18’s State team in 2009.

The coaching staff has been very pleased with the progress of the squad to date and there are some very positive signs arising from the pre-season training regime.

The intensity and quality of the training sessions has risen significantly during the current phase of training and the players are learning very quickly what it means to be part of the Melbourne Storm family.

There is a long way to go but the early indications are again very positive for the 2010 SG Ball team.

YOUNG EEL TO BLOOM
ourfootyteam.com
PARRAMATTA's Pat O’Hanlon believes a testing tenure out of the game has him primed for a big year in the under-20 Toyota Cup, which will feature a handful of talented teenagers who hail from the Mackay region.

The former Brothers and Mackay State High forward is itching for action after a shoulder reconstruction brought a premature end to his 2009 campaign.

“I spent the second half of the season off the field which was very frustrating. I’m not one for sitting on the sideline,” the 18-year-old said after a lengthy layoff.

The bustling back rower is now fully recovered and has been pitched into the A grade squad for the off-season, running alongside the likes of Dally M player of the year Jarryd Hayne.

“I’m looking up to blokes like Justin Poore – he’s come to the club with a great attitude (and) you want to be able to emulate players like Nathan Cayless and Nathan Hindmarsh,” he said.

And while O’Hanlon’s been training with the stars, he said he’s “just looking to play as well as I can for the 20s this season and if anything happens from there, it’s a bonus.”

“I’m just keen to use the experience I’ve got from training with the A grade side to help the 20s.”

At almost two metres and 100kg, O’Hanlon played 12 matches for the Eels’ Toyota Cup side last year and was named the club’s SG Ball player of the season despite making only five appearances for the under-18 side.

An under-18 QLD and ex-Australian AIS rep, O’Hanlon had an arm broken in 2008 and was troubled by related shoulder fractures until the reconstruction last July.

Meanwhile, Mackay flyer Dane Gagai is again on the under-20 roster at the Broncos. The schoolboy rugby union sensation was at the centre of a tug-of-war in late 2008 when the Broncos and QLD Reds were vying for his signature.

Ryan Williamson is geared to make an impact at the Sydney Roosters this season after recovering from a couple of injury setbacks. The hard-running three-quarter is a former Australian schoolboys representative.

Steven Elliot and Proserpine product Chris Faust are again on the books at the NQ Cowboys where there are also high hopes for former Tambo and Mackay prospect Robert McLeod.

Mackay and District Rugby League’s rookie of the year Kelvin Nielsen was expected to link with Manly’s under-20 squad this season but it’s suggested he could spend some time on the sideline after suffering a knee injury.

Marmin Barba, who is on the mend after being diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma, was with Canterbury’s SG Ball side last year and it’s believed he could lace up for them again in the future.

Former under-20 hotshots Daly Cherry-Evans (Manly), Ben Barba (Canterbury) and Travis Waddell (Canberra) have been included in their club’s A grade squads for the 2010 NRL premiership where they will join Danny Williams (Canterbury), Josh Hoffman (Brisbane), Grant Rovelli (NQ), Brett Seymour (NZ), Neville Costigan (St George Illawarra) and premiership winner Dane Nielsen (Storm).

QRL STANDS FIRM ON COMMISSION MAKE-UP
STORY BY : JOSH RAKIC Sydney Morning Herald
QUEENSLAND RUGBY LEAGUE boss Ross Livermore has poured cold water on the 16 NRL clubs' hopes of having a landmark independent commission running by March 12.

Livermore yesterday reiterated the body's pre-meeting stance that the QRL, ARL and NSWRL be entitled to nominate four members to the proposed eight-member independent commission board. It is a stance that is proving a stumbling block to the creation of the commission.

The QRL board met on Tuesday with the commission high on its agenda, and has subsequently called for an urgent meeting of ARL powerbrokers. But Livermore insisted the meeting was not in reaction to the clubs' demand that the commission be operational by March 12, and said the QRL would not change its position on the selection process for members of the commission.

''Reports that the CRL [Country Rugby League], NSWRL and ARL have fallen into line with the clubs this week is rubbish,'' Livermore said. ''The CRL haven't changed their view, NSW haven't changed their view and we haven't changed out view, which means the ARL hasn't changed its view since our meeting.

''We all had a meeting on December 8, and I know the ARL is still waiting to hear back from News Ltd from the stuff we put forward then. So nothing's changed. And the QRL has had no contact with [Titans CEO and independent commission architect] Michael Searle since the clubs' meeting on Monday.''

Livermore rejected claims the QRL was standing in the road of rugby league history, saying: ''People keep saying we're the hurdle but the way I see it we're the horse jumping over it. We haven't been sitting on our hands. The QRL had a board meeting Tuesday, and we've asked for a meeting to be held as soon as possible with the ARL because we want to keep this thing progressing.

''We haven't deviated from the start. Monday's meeting of the clubs didn't bring anything new to the table, it was just a meeting for all clubs to understand where the whole thing's at.

''We've put some things forward to the ARL and are waiting to find out when our meeting will be. As Geoff Carr has consistently said, we all want it to be done but it has to be done right. That's where we're sitting.''

Livermore said the QRL had suggested on December 8 to the ARL and 16 NRL clubs that the commission should be free of any possible conflict of interest between board members, state leagues and the clubs.

''This is exactly what we said: 'The [QRL] directors generally do not support the appointment to an independent body of any person who has held a position with the partnership - NRL, ARL, state leagues or NRL clubs.' That was noted in the minutes,'' Livermore said.

''That's our view at the QRL, and if someone can convince us otherwise, we'll have a look at it. What we're saying is if someone's got 50 per cent of the game and the other mob's got 50, you've got to have equality. Fair is fair. We're only looking for equality.

''Under the agreement the NRL clubs have with News Ltd in writing, the clubs will get 50 per cent of the game if News Ltd exited. Currently, the ARL has 50 per cent ownership, well they're not going to hand that to the clubs. So you've got the ARL with a 50 per cent share and the 16 NRL clubs with a 50 per cent share.

''What we want is to be in a position to nominate an equal number of board members as the clubs have got … That's the QRL view. It's transparent.''

TITANS GIVE KIDS ‘BUZZ’ OUT OF LEAGUE

It may be in the thick of summer but rugby league was the order of the day for 130 kids on the Gold Coast today as part of a Jetstar Gold Coast Titans coaching clinic.

Jetstar Titans duo Ashley Harrison and William Zillman joined a contingent of Titans junior players and ARL Development Officers to help teach a group of enthusiastic youngsters some of the finer points of the game along with healthy lifestyle habits.

The kids were introduced to all the skills necessary to play rugby league before they were given a talk on nutrition as part of the NRL’s One Community Eat Well, Play Well, Stay Well program.

It is the second planned Jetstar Titans coaching clinic for this week, with more 100 kids scheduled to attend another clinic to be held at Waterford, near Logan on Thursday.

Harrison himself remembers the impact a similar visit had on him when he was as an aspiring young rugby league player growing up in Brisbane and said it was great that kids could get a ‘buzz’ out of rugby league.

“I remember a few of the Broncos players coming out to my school when I was a young kid and I was so happy that I couldn’t stop talking about it for weeks,’’ smiled Harrison.

“Hopefully they get the same buzz out of it these days and they continue to play rugby league.

“It’s all about getting the kids out and talking to them about healthy eating and healthy lifestyles.

“It puts a smile of your face to come down and help them out.’’

Zillman, a Logan Brothers junior, said it was great that rugby league could be used as a vehicle to help teach kids about healthy lifestyle habits.

“It’s great to get the kids outside and active and what better way than to involve rugby league in it,’’ said Zillman.

“As I arrived it is unbelievable how many kids had Titans gear on. It’s a special thing for the club and it’s great because the kids look up to the footy players.’’

Harrison said the sea of blue and gold Titans colours at the clinic was a perfect illustration of the reasons why the club was crowned the NRL’s One Community Club of the Year for 2009.

“The Titans have been really active in the community since we’ve been in the competition and we’re really starting to see the benefits of it now,’’ he said.

“I think you’re on the right track when you see kids running around the streets in Titans jerseys and shirts so hopefully we can keep winning games and the kids can keep supporting us.’’

MATTHEWS TO COACH TERRIERS
ourfootyteam.com
The Gulgong Terriers have announced the highly regarded Col Matthews would be the coach for the 2010 rugby league season.

He will join former Terrier Darron Brough to oversee the Castlereagh Cup first grade and Youth League sides and hopefully take both to a premiership glory after just missing out on the titles in 2009.

Matthew said he will still keep his representative position with the AIS which will not clash with his commitments with the Terriers.

The respected coach’s plans for the Terriers side include bring a new level of professionalism and analysis to the side as well as adopting some of the latest playing techniques.

ACADEMY PLAYERS PUT THROUGH PACES AT FARRER
Tamworth's - Northern Daily Leader
THE holiday is definitely over for Wests Greater Northern Academy players.

They returned from their break and were put straight to work at Farrer High School on Sunday with speed, endurance and strength testing to show how much they have improved since the start of the summer program.

The good news is most players showed improvement and some were particularly outstanding.

Warialda half Ryan Stevens scored 20.1 on the yo-yo test.

“That’s the best that we’ve ever had,” head coach Jamie McCormack said.

“It’s a record.

“That just shows how keen he is.

“It’s good to get them back after Christmas to see what a difference it’s made.”

And there were plenty of other good performers too, like Jack Pawsey who was second in the yo-yo test but was also last standing in one of the strength tests.

They also did 40m sprints and push-ups and rated their scores against those recorded back in November.

Young local referees also joined the squad for testing and training.

The squad has one more training run before playing against two junior NRL sides next month.

The two GNA sides will face teams from the Newcastle Knights and the Bulldogs at Kurri Kurri on February 5.

“They all get to play each other in short games,” McCormack said.

“So everyone will get a good run.

“That’s what we’ll be working hard on the next two sessions, getting ready for that.

“So we’ll be getting into some team work.”

The last session is on January 30 at Scully Park.

• The Oxley region is also on the lookout for coaches and trainers for 2010.

Applications for the under 18s positions will close on February 5 and should be forwarded to Ross Hamilton.

The Oxley Pioneers under 18s play at Muswellbrook on the weekend on April 17 and 18 with the semis to follow the next weekend and the final to be played ahead of the City/Country Origin game at Port Macquarie on May 7.

TALENTED BRIBIE ISLAND RUGBY LEAGUE TRIO MAKE THE CUT

THREE Bribie Island Junior Rugby League Club products will play in this year’s prestigious Cyril Connell Cup under-16 competition.

Kieren O’Meara and Scott Ferguson have been selected for the Redcliffe Dolphins, and Brad Winzar the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles.

The Cyril Connell Cup starts in February, and the Bribie boys will clash in April when the Dolphins take on the Sea Eagles at Stockland Park, Kawana.

Meanwhile, Bribie has a host of players in under-13 and 14 Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles development squads.

Jake Hicks, Matt Eakin, Jarrod Aitken, Cavan McAlister, Tom Rafter, Matt Bennett, Caleb Austin, Liam Ireland, Josh Vella, Michael Austin and Cory Parker have made the Coast’s elite under-13 program, while Liam O’Meara, Jai Elers and Alex Albert are in the under-14 squad.

The boys did a six-week training program and then were selected into a squad of 25 for further development over the pre-season.

The first three rounds of the season is when they are eligible to be selected for the Sunshine Coast Black Representative teams to play the 47th Battalion carnival at Bundaberg.

JUNIOR COMETS READY FOR LIFT-OFF
Story & Photo By : Molly McShane Rockhampton's The Morning Bulletin
Rugby League is not an easy career path, but these two young guns are certainly on the right track to one day play for the open Central Comets team in the Queensland Cup.

But for now Luke Guinane and Luke Crumblin prepare to storm up the under-16 Cyril Connell and the under-18 Mal Meninga Cups, with the draws released this week.

For Guinane 2010 will be his first year playing for Rockhampton’s prided team and even though he is only 15 he said playing professional football was all he wanted to do and he was proud to be selected for the under-16 Comets.

The young footballer, who originally played for Rockhampton Brothers, said the training sessions so far had been intense with his first five day training camp coming up this month.

However Crumblin, 18, made himself known in last year’s under-16 Comets and eased his way in for the under-18 team this year.

Scott Minto, chief executive officer of the Central Comets, said although the juniors were still young it was serious business and this was where their careers began.

“It is basically a junior Queensland Cup,” Minto said yesterday.

“This is the way we are trying to nurture our players in our system, we want them to stay with us the whole way through – you don’t always get a shot down south and they are better off staying here and develop their talent,” Minto said.

“The under-18 side are now pushing to get into our full time training squad, at the moment we have Luke Crumblin and Sam Madden.”

And although the boys are in for a tough year of footy, Minto said the teams were up for the challenge with strong players in the under-16 team.

The under-16 and under-18 competitions this year are again split into southern and northern conferences with the Central Comets to face the Northern Pride in their first game.

“The Norths knocked us out of the semi finals last year and have good players up that way,” Minto said.

“Townsville Stingers are very strong and are in the Northern conference and the kids who play with that team sign with the Cowboys so they are good,” he said.

The Central Comets under-16 and under-18 first home game will be against the Northern Pride on March 6.

RAIDERS START CAMPAIGN
ourfootyteam.com
The Macquarie Raiders’ campaign to return to the form that saw them win the 2008 Tooheys New Group 11 first grade premiership will begin tonight with the first pre-season training session.

Macquarie will train at Apex Oval from 6pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Apex Oval.

All existing and interested players are invited to attend, according to president Gavin Board.

“The first training session will be a bit of a meet and greet with the new coaching staff, brothers Matt and Andy Stott,” Board said.

“They’ll be looking to get things organised and get everyone together to start the season off.

“We will be retaining most of the players from last year with a lot of senior guys like Chris Thompson, Zac Rennick, Lawrence Fogg and Chris Daley indicated that they will be back for another run.

“There will also be a lot of former junior players like Anthony Egan-Smith and Ben McQuillan coming through the ranks.”

Dave Daley as reserve grade coach and Greg Edwards in the position of under-18s mentor will resume their positions at the club.

Board said the club was hoping to register a stand-alone junior team in the Castlereagh Cup, after a combined Dubbo team was entered into the competition’s inaugural under-17s competition in 2009.

“Any under-17 players who want to play footy should come down and train as well,” he said.

“We are looking to get an under-18s team into the Castlereagh Cup competition.

“If we get enough numbers we could fly a team under the Macquarie banner.

“So kids were in last year’s under-16s and are interested in a game are encouraged to come along.”

Board said the club had held initial talks with former player and 2008 Bob Weir Medalist for Player of the Grand Final, Ash Conn, who moved to play with Group 10 club Orange CYMS during 2009.

HEAT ON NORTHERN PRIDE RECRUIT
Story BY : The Cairns Post
ourfootyteam.com
AFTER only arriving in Cairns last week, Northern Pride recruit Ryan Stig has already identified his first obstacle to overcome - the heat.

The former Newcastle Knights Toyota Cup playmaker spent seven weeks in pre-season training with the Pride's NRL affiliate the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville before Christmas, but yesterday rated playing in Cairns a hotter prospect.

"Probably the biggest thing is the heat," he said.

"I was in Townsville before Christmas but I reckon it's hotter here. And a lot more humid."

Stig is hopeful his form will be just as hot when he replaces Parramatta signing Tom Humble as pivot for the Pride.

The 20-year-old aims to win Cowboys selection and is excited at the prospect of playing alongside Australian halfback Johnathan Thurston.

But he is also eager to play alongside skipper Chris Sheppard in the halves for the Pride.

"He's got a lot of experience," he said of Sheppard. "I'm looking forward to forming a good combo with him.

"I played a bit of (five-eighth and halfback) in the juniors, but mostly five-eighth and I prefer it.

"So it's going to work out well with Shep being a natural halfback."

Stig will also have plenty of opportunity to pick the mind of former Cowboy and Dragon Sheppard, spending his first week in Cairns at his skipper's home.

Stig will see action for the Cowboys during the pre-season trials but believed he would start the season proper at the Pride.

Having already completed one training session with the Pride, Stig said he was happy to venture north despite missing more session time with the Cowboys.

"I'm playing in a trail for the Cowboys, but this gives me a chance to come up here and to get to know the boys and get some combinations," he said.

"I'll start here at the start of the season and hopefully I can play well and force my way (into the Cowboys team)."

Sheppard said Stig's signing was a good one for last year's Queensland Cup runners-up.

"He's got a lot of potential, a lot of up-side, and we're looking forward to having him here and playing him at five-eighth," he said.

"He's a good kicker, can take the line on - he's pretty quick, and he's got a good passing game, so he's got a fair bit there."

Sheppard was confident of forming a strong scrumbase partnership with the young recruit.

"It'll take time again, like it did with Tommy (Humble), but we think we've got the right man in Ryan, so (I'm) looking forward to seeing how he fits into the team and seeing how he goes and we think he'll bring something to us."

JACOB FAIRBANK KEEPING FAMOUS NAME IN SPOTLIGHT
ourfootyteam.com
At the age of 19, talented forward Jacob Fairbank is already proving to be one of Huddersfield's hottest young properties.

Having been promoted to the Giants' Super League squad for 2010, the Halifax-based Fairbank underlined his potential by leading a young and inexperienced Huddersfield side into pre-season action against full-strength Batley Bulldogs at Mount Pleasant a week ago.

Although Fairbank and his teammates were beaten 40-12, the young loose-forward caught the eye with his non-stop, aggressive and no-nonsense approach, which has been a family trademark for several generations.

The son of former Keighley player Mark, Jacob's uncles include ex-Great Britain and Bradford legend Karl, John (Leeds and Oldham) and Dick (Halifax), while grandfather Jack made a big name for himself at Leeds.

It's no surprise, therefore, that Jacob, who like the rest of the family came up through the ranks at top amateur club Elland, is making a name for himself. How could he not coming from stock like that!

But the level-headed youngster already knows he still has a lot of work ahead of him to match the exploits of some of his illustrious older relatives.

"Like a lot of my family, I'd love to make it in the game," said Jacob.

"Before starting full-time training late last year I was working as a joiner, and even though I've only been a professional rugby league players for a few months I know this is what I want to do for as many years as possible.

"Whether that happens is obviously down to me, but I already love doing this and I'm prepared to do whatever it takes to make that happen.

"It's going to take a lot of hard work, I know that, but I'm determined to be the next member of the family to enjoy success in the sport.

"At the Giants, I think I'm at the best place to be."

Fairbank earned a three-year full-time deal last September on the back of being named the Giants' Academy Player of the Year in 2008 and then being the cornerstone of the successful Reserve team pack last season.

He was also handed the contract after he had just returned from a Great Britain Community Lions tour of Australia.

Fairbank knows playing in Super League would be a far greater achievement, and with his confidence at an all-time high he does believe it's a realistic aim.

"I can't believe how much I've developed in the relatively short time I've been training full-time," he added.

"I'm learning with every session and now feel comfortable working at this level. I'm also putting size on all the time - I'm up to 97kg and hope to get up to 100 eventually - but I'm still managing to feel fitter, as well as stronger.

"At the moment, my preferred position is still probably loose-forward, but the coaching staff have got me down as a prop, that's why they're keen for me to put the weight on.

"To be honest, I'm perfectly happy about that. If they feel my future is at prop, I'm more than happy about that, especially if it means it gives me more of a chance to break into the first team.

"I know that's still a little further down the track, but I am feeling pretty confident about things at the moment.

"I was relatively happy with the way I played at Batley last week.

"I did, of course, play loose-forward that day and my fitness felt good. In fact, I would have liked to have played more time!

"And what was the best thing about that was that the coaching staff were pleased with the way I played and they told me I was going to be in the squad to face Halifax tomorrow, if it had gone ahead.

"I was obviously gutted when we found out it was off.

"But the fact I'd been included was another step in the right direction, and I just hope it's not long before I'm part of a first-team squad once again - and can get a game!"

CAMERON KING REFLECTS ON A BIG 2009
ourfootyteam.com
Cameron King is a country boy come good in the big smoke. Hailing from the country he also brought his humble country work ethics and values and these have helped turn this boy from Wagga Wagga into one of the elite of Australian sport.

2009 was a dream year for young Cameron and we spoke to one of his coaches at Endeavour Sports High School, Mr Brad Kelly, who was kind enough to tell us some of Cameron’s achievements through 2009.

"Cameron arrived at Endeavour SHS in year 9 and he ended up staying at the school for 4 years.

"2009 was a pretty stellar year for him, he has probably achieved more this year than any other student who has gone through our rugby league program.”

"Cameron has been great in terms of his leadership qualities not just in the games - but at training and his attitude around the school", said Mr Kelly.

Some of Cameron’s achievements through 2009 include :

Cameron said he owed a lot to his biggest supporter, his Mum who has been there for him and gone through the highs and lows and dragged him around to games and training since he started playing footy at the ripe old age of 4.

President of the Australian Schoolboys Rugby League (ASSRL) Mr. Bruce Wallace couldn’t praise Cameron enough. "Cameron is the first rugby league player since Blake Green in 2004 to win the award. Just to be nominated for the Val Lembit Award is huge - and to win it is sensational.”

“It's a marvelous achievement seeing as Ian Thorpe one it twice in 1997 and 1998”, said Mr Wallace.

Below we have exclusively for ourfootyteam readers an interview with the man himself.

And not just a track set down by Manly, NSW and Australian great Noel ``Crusher’’ Cleal, now a highly regarded scout for the Sea Eagles.

But also by his Noel’s brother Les, who played with Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, and former Redcliffe Dolphins premiership forward and Australian Schoolboys representative Grant Cleal, who is Hobday’s uncle.

All were renown for being tough, uncompromising players on the footy field. Noel, especially, was regarded by many, including a lot of Queenslanders, as one of the fiercest second rowers of the mid-1980s.

And if Hobday’s best-on-tour performance for the Australian Institute of Sport’s rugby league squad on the tour to France and the UK in late November is anything to go by, the young prop has inherited the same rampaging style.

One thing he hasn’t inherited is the ``Crusher’’ nickname. Instead he has been given the tag ``Boppa’’, a moniker that suits well his playing style.

``I’d love to play like my uncles,’’ the 106kg teenager said.

``They’ve given me a few tips, and I watched Grant play a lot at Redcliffe.’’

Hobday started his fledgling career as an under-7 with Redcliffe, and spent seasons at Pine Rivers, Arana Hills and Albany Creek before returning to the Peninsula to play under-18s this year.

It proved a clever move, and after a strong season with the Dolphins and his first representative tour with the AIS, the Wavell State High School student is headed to Sydney’s northern beaches to make a go of playing first grade football, just like those of his family before him.

It will start in Manly’s SG Ball side, but there is already talk he may find a regular home in Manly’s under-20 Toyota Cup team.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE NEWTOWN JETSHAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE NEWTOWN JETS TOMORROW ….

PHIL SCHAEFER AWARDED LIFE MEMBERSHIP

LIFE MEMBERSHIP CITATION PHIL SCHAEFER

Phil Schaefer has been nominated for ASSRL Life Membership for his ongoing commitment to schoolboy rugby league and for the development of the NSW Combined Independent Schools into an active constituent body of the ASSRLC.

As a player, Phil represented Balmain RLFC in over 25 first grade matches between 1978 and 1982.

He has been involved in schoolboy rugby league since he commenced teaching in 1982 at De La Salle, Revesby and has continued throughout his whole career as a teacher.

During the early 1990s, Phil was instrumental in the development of the game within the Christian Schools Sports Association, a sub-association of the NSW Combined Independent Schools, selecting and coaching teams to play against various school and district sides as well as the running of an annual 7-a-side carnival, which later became the NSWCIS 7’s Gala Day.

In 1997, Phil was appointed coach of the inaugural NSWCIS U/18s team which competed at the ASSRL Championships in Parkes.

He continued to coach the CIS Team in 1998 (Melbourne), 1999 (Gold Coast – Pool B Runners-Up) and 2000 (Brisbane).

In 2000, Phil was appointed Convenor of the NSWCIS Rugby League, a position in which he has continued to this present day.

Phil has worked tirelessly to promote rugby league amongst the many schools within CIS through gala days, annual state competitions and opportunities for students to compete at the ASSRL Championships.

In 2001, Phil convened a very successful ASSRL 15 Years Championships at Moorebank and followed this up by conducting another successful 18 Years Championships in St Marys in 2004.

Phil was an ASSRL selector for the 18 Years Australian schoolboy teams in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007. He has also been a delegate to the ASSRL Council since1998.

In this role, he was instrumental in the development of a new draw format for the ASSRL Championships to accommodate the new Combined Affiliated States Team (18 Years) and a second Queensland Team (15 Years).

This outline was endorsed by the ASSRL Council in 2005 and first implemented in 2006.

Phil has always been a dedicated Council member and has contributed to the development of the organization through his thoughtful and selfless commitment to schoolboy rugby league.

He is an outstanding administrator who pursues his passion of schoolboy rugby league, for all of the right reasons. Phil is a most worthy recipient of ASSRL Life Membership
Israel Folau has decided to skip the two year overseas religious posting

CHURCH CAN WAIT FOR FOLAU
Sydney's Daily Telegraph
BRISBANE superstar Israel Folau will shelve plans to embark on a religious mission for at least five years to dedicate the prime of his career to the Broncos.

With the Broncos returning to pre-season training tomorrow, Folau declared he had no intention of quitting Brisbane mid-contract to fulfil a two-year sabbatical for his church. Two years ago, Folau, a devout Mormon and member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, rocked the NRL when he spoke publicly of his desire to break from the game to seek an overseas religious posting.

The group strongly encourages members to undertake a two-year mission by the age of 25, meaning Folau, 20, has until 2014 to serve his church overseas.

But the Test star says he will see out his four-year deal at the Broncos, which expires at the end of 2012, and may never complete his religious mission. "I won't be going any time soon," said Folau, who will report at Red Hill tomorrow at full fitness after missing Australia's Four Nations victory with an ankle injury.

"I certainly won't be going in the next few years. If I did go, it might be in another five years, but I'm not thinking about it too much because I'm happy here at the Broncos. You have to do it (the religious mission) before the age of 25. If I don't do it by then, I can't go at all. But if I don't go, that's the way it goes."

A number of Mormons have quit the NRL in recent seasons to serve their religious posting. Titans rookie Jordan Rapana is about to complete his first year in England, while John Hopoate's brother Albert, now with the Sydney Roosters, and former Broncos utility Fraser Anderson have spread the gospel.

Such is their devotion to their faith, the Folau family does not watch rugby league on Sundays. But Folau says no one is forcing his hand to go abroad. "There's no pressure from my family or the church," he said. "They've said it's entirely up to me, and at this stage I'm not going."

Besides, Folau believes there is too much on his radar in rugby league. Despite scoring 17 tries, he wasn't completely satisfied with his maiden season at Red Hill.

The bad news for rivals is Folau has grown another two centimetres. And the 196cm flyer has spent the off-season working on his speed. Folau says he will start 2010 the quickest of his career - and he has his sights on a full-time move into the centres.

"I'd prefer to play centre," he said. "I played a few positions last year but I'd like to focus on one position. If I had to play wing, I would do what's best for the team, but I'd like to be in the centres. To be honest, I don't feel like I played the best footy I can play (last season) and that is a positive thing for me.

"I know I can improve and I want to do better for myself and the team. I want to take my game to a new level and I feel with the training I've done so far I can achieve it. I've been working mainly on my speed and I've been working on things in attack. I've been trying to mix up my runs.

"Last year, I think most of my runs were from dummy-half and I'm going to try to change that up for next season."

Folau says he has no interest in wearing the No. 1 jumper following the departure of Karmichael Hunt.

"Ivan (Henjak, Broncos coach) is looking at his options for fullback but I don't see myself playing there," he said. "Personally, I think Justin Hodges or Denan Kemp would be best suited for that role.I haven't played much fullback as a kid so I don't think that position is for me."

BULLDOGS LOOK TO LURE PARRAMATTA NRL STAR DANIEL MORTIMER
Sydney's Daily Telegraph
PARRAMATTA might have won their epic preliminary final battle in September but the Bulldogs are now scheming to win the war for the signatures of Daniel Mortimer and Feleti Mateo.

The Bulldogs see young Mortimer as the natural heir to veteran Brett Kimmorley's No. 7 jersey - and not just because his surname is synonymous with the Belmore club.

While the 19-year-old's rookie season was brilliant, Bulldogs CEO Todd Greenberg is perhaps more enamoured with Mortimer's maturity and class - qualities Canterbury now demand from new recruits.

Greenberg has held several rounds of talks with the Mortimer camp since the Grand Final, and father Peter is again warming to his old club after becoming disillusioned a few years back when the Bulldogs were a disciplinary rabble.

As for Mateo - also off contract at the end of this year - Greenberg has enlisted a secret weapon in the form of assistant coach Jim Dymock. Mateo has great respect for Dymock from their 2008 World Cup campaign for Tonga, when the former Eels and Bulldogs star coached the team.

Mateo couldn't crack Parramatta's starting side during the finals, but there would be no such problem at Canterbury, where the ball-playing utility would call more of the shots.

Parramatta CEO Paul Osborne is aware of the raid and guaranteed Eels fans a rearguard action had begun. "We know what the Bulldogs are up to - and we want to keep both of them," Osborne said. "Ideally, we'd like to do it before the season starts so it's not a distraction."

Greenberg went to extraordinary lengths to meet the families of 2009 recruits Michael Ennis and Ben Hannant before they signed.

BRUCE WALLACE AWARDED LIFE MEMBERSHIP
ourfootyteam.com
LIFE MEMBERSHIP CITATION - BRUCE WALLACE

Bruce Wallace’s contribution to the Australian Schools Rugby League and Schools Rugby League in general is approaching unparalleled.

Bruce’s passion and involvement in Schools Rugby League commenced in the mid 1970’s as a teacher in the inner metropolitan area of Sydney where his abilities as a coach and an administrator were quickly noted by those involved.

He assumed the roles of Zone and Regional coach as well as the Regional convener’s role.

In the early 80’s Bruce gained the respect and confidence of the Sub Committee, quickly earning the position of manager of the NSWCHS 15 Years team.

His desire to coach was realised soon after and Bruce then went on to coach NSWCHS 15 Years and Opens to remarkable success at ASSRL Championships.

Having achieved noted successes as a coach, Bruce turned his hand to administration, assuming the role of NSWCHS Convener, a position he held for four years, contributing significantly to the workings of the ASSRL Council.

In this period Bruce was appointed ASSRL coach and successfully coached the Australian side from 1993 until 1995, culminating in the highly successful tour of England and France where many point scoring records were set.

In 1996 Bruce Wallace was elected as President of the ASSRL, a role he has continued in for the past thirteen years. In this role Bruce has demonstrated remarkable leadership and continued passion.

In his time as President, Bruce represented the ASSRL at both international and national forums and has seen the ASSRL develop into a most dynamic and respected organisation.

He has negotiated and organised many International exchanges and overseen National Championships every year of his Presidency, and done so in a calm and assiduous manner.

His long term vision has led to many significant changes in ASSRL and its Championships.

He has also generously assisted ASSRL team officials learn their role, and helped them develop their skills and capacities in the sport of rugby league. He has represented ASSRL on the Player Agent Accreditation Committee since its inception.

This has been vital in ensuring the implementation of proper protocols for Player Agents, an important element with regards to child protection.

His longevity in the role is testimony to the interest, passion and ability of the man and fulfill all the requisites for an ASSRL Life Membership.

Bruce Wallace is undoubtedly one of the most deserved recipients of the ASSRL Life Membership as his contribution, coupled with his remarkable length of service to the association would be difficult to equal.
PARRAMATTA SNAP UP NT TEENAGE RAIDER
Northern Territory News
NEWCASTLE Knights winger James McManus blazed a trail to the National Rugby League like no other Territorian before him.

But hot on the NSW Origin representative's heels is another Palmerston Raider making good, Bradley Hanson.

Just as McManus did in 2002, Hansen was named Darwin Rugby League's rookie of the year.

And like the 17-year-old McManus did in 2003, Hansen yesterday signed his first NRL deal.

The versatile teenager will join Parramatta's Toyota Cup side in 2011, seeing out another year in Darwin with the Raiders and leading the NT Titans in the under-18 Mal Meninga Cup in Queensland.

He will also trial for the Affiliated States team that will play in the top tier of the Australian under-18 schoolboys championships.

If unsuccessful he will again play for the Territory under-18 side in Pool B.

Hansen's first order of business in the New Year will be a week-long training camp with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) which will include trial games against Canberra and St George in mid-January.

Fellow NT Institute of Sport players Jake Watts, Dylan Cartwright and Matt Bennett will also push their cases for selection in the 2010 AIS squad.

Watts, Bennett and Cartwright will then try woo Manly Sea Eagle and West Tigers selectors in a bid to win NRL contracts themselves.

LEAGUE JUNIORS WAITING ON A DREAM
Dubbo's Daily Liberal
Two local players are counting down the days till they play for the New South Wales Indigenous Under-16s against Queensland.

Swade Dunn from Eastridge and Peak Hill’s Ricky Read, who played last season with the premiership-winning Dubbo PCYC Under-15s, have been named in the 20-player squad.

Not only will the two boys represent their State and their heritage, but also play in the curtain-raiser before the history making NRL All Stars clash at the Gold Coast.

The Dubbo boys will join their team-mates in camp from Monday, February 8 before the game on the Saturday to be played at Skilled Park, Robina.

“There were 40 kids down at the trials and there were some very good players there,” Swade said.

“I didn’t think I had a great chance of making the squad, but was really pleased when my name was on the list sent to us.

“At the trials we had training and skills work and then a game, so it must have been hard for the selectors.”

Swade and Ricky have both been named on the bench but hope to get some quality time from the coaching staff that includes coach Chris Binge from Goonellabah and managers Phil Duncan (Sydney) and Tim Humphries (Wagga).

Swade said his best position is five-eighth but he’s also played half-back for Eastridge Under-15s who made the grand final this season.

Blake on the other hand is a prop or second-rower and like Swade will be playing Under-16s in 2010.

“Making this team is a big thrill,’ Ricky said.

“I’ve played for Western Schoolboys Under-15s, the Western Academy and Group 11, and our PCYC team Under-15s won the grand final last year, but this is easily the highest selection I’ve made.”

Despite the game being two months away, the boys are already thinking about the trip to the Gold Coast.

“Playing the game is going to be great but I think being in camp and hopefully around the NRL All Stars players will be out of this world. It should be great,” Swade said.

Rugby league has long been a tradition in the Dunn family.

Swade’s father Robbie played with the Canberra Raiders and uncle Mick Dunn has been a huge supporter and offered plenty of encouragement to Swade throughout his young career.
