The English academy had the best of the first half with three tries off the back of Australian mistakes.

The only points for the Aussies came off two kicks into the opponent's ingoal.

The first was from a Chris Sandow kick that was fumbled by the winger with Joel Thompson diving on it for a 4 pointer.

The second in the 27th minute saw a try to winger Shannon Walker after a well placed kick by Mitchell Pearce to the same corner. The half time score was England 16-8 with the Aussies needing plenty to get back in the game especially with Joseph Paulo in the sin bin for 10 minutes ( including 7 minutes of the 2nd half) MATCH REPORT see the score and match photos | IN THE LOCKER ROOM |

The Australian Schoolboys achieved the first step in the 2006 campaign to reclaim ascendancy in the World Schoolboys Rugby League.

10/12 - Australia had a narrow escape last night in the first test against the ENGLAND ACADEMY (GB) Under 18's.

After coming from behind at the change 16 - 8, the Aussies opened the second half of the 1 st Test with plenty of powerful 'go forward' which allowed the talented backs some space to let the ball sing in the crisp Bradford air.

But a try by Sydney's, St. Gregorys College student and Australian Fullback Chris LAWRENCE, put the English Professionals on the back foot, and they could not hold out these talented young Australian's in the last few minutes left in the game, only to see the Aussies poured on the juice and cross over the English line for two late try's.

Thursday 7 December, 2006 MEDIA RELEASE

The NRL will today launch a major new community initiative with a spectacular Christmas Party involving players from all NSW clubs joining children from nominated charities at Luna Park.

Using the strong profile of Rugby League the ‘One Community’ programme will work across all levels of the game - players, volunteers, supporters and corporate partners - to make a positive difference to people’s lives.

The programme will specifically focus on improving the lives of children and families who are in need.

One Community will also respond to key public needs by building strategic partnerships in the areas of health, education and social issues.

“Through the One Community program we’re looking to showcase the game’s already strong community involvement and build further interaction between all levels of the game and the community,” NRL Chief Executive Mr David Gallop said today.

“Rugby League has a unique ability to make a positive difference to people’s lives and the One Community program will be an important feature of our game moving forward.

“This program will provide a clear direction for our community involvement so we can have maximum impact for our efforts.

“Players are very aware of their ability to inspire others, similarly they take a great deal of inspiration from the people they meet when they are out and about.”

Using a tender process the One Community Programme has identified four major national charities to partner in 2007:

1. Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia: Funds research, equipment and support services for children and families within five of Australia’s Children’s Hospitals (Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide & Perth).
2. Lifeline Australia: Providing people with access to emotional care services.
3. Youngcare: Raising awareness and helping young people with high care needs and living in Aged Care homes.
4. National Breast Cancer Foundation.

The One Community programme will also introduce several new initiatives including Learning with League educational programmes, a major book drive and a special awards night to recognize the efforts of volunteers and players who go above and beyond the call of duty with charity work.

At the same time the NRL and players will maintain existing relationships with an extensive array of charity programmes.

Today’s party will see a visit from Santa Claus and gifts for all children. The party is open to all media with official proceedings to commence at 11am.

The three Queensland teams will host similar functions at Dreamworld next Tuesday 12 December and the Melbourne Storm will take Christmas Cheer to the Royal Melbourne Childrens Hospital next Wednesday 13 December.

NSWRL MEDIA RELEASE Wednesday 5 th December 2006

Rugby League today mourns the passing of one of the sport’s most dedicated and long serving officials, Mr Eric Cox, O.A.M.

A former player, referee, administrator, ‘ground manager’ and until the time of his death an active Vice President of the NSWRL and a member of the NSWRL Leagues Club Board, Eric Cox, was a part of the game’s character for almost 75 years.

His ‘tough as nails’ persona carried through in recent weeks as the 83 year old battled pneumonia, the result of Asbestosis, and then a stroke while still talking of his wish to reach his 75th year in the game at the 2008 World Cup.

Born in Burwood in 1923, Eric Cox began what would be a life-long love affair with the game of rugby league as a Ball Boy in Lismore and then as a player until he signed on with the Royal Australian Navy in 1940.

During World War 2 he saw active service principally on board HMS Kanimbla, and his support for Australia’s servicemen and women remained a fierce passion for his remaining years.

The time also heightened his reputation for self discipline and his insistence on proper procedure. His fierce dedication to both would influence the training of generations of Rugby League’s most senior referees in years to come, while the generosity he showed with his time and experience would leave nobody in doubt about the caring disposition that was the heart of the man.

Remaining in the service after the war, Eric played for Brisbane Valleys as a centre and lock and in Townsville before heading back to Sydney where he coached St George’s President’s Cup team in 1950.

The next year he was awarded his referee’s certificate going on to become a graded referee and a leading figure in both the St George District and NSW Referees’ Associations.

In 1978 he was appointed the NSWRL Director of referees, a post he held for five years.

As the game’s match day presentation became more professional in the 80’s, Eric was the forerunner of the professional ground manager, ensuring that every aspect of game day operations was followed.

Respected by players coaches, stadium staff and officials (despite some often ‘blustery’ confrontations), the old navy man earned the nickname ‘the Bosun’.

Famous for running a particularly `tight ship’, he was noted for his refusal to bend the rules for even the biggest stars.

He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2002 for services to Rugby League as a referee, player, coach and administrator.

Eric is survived by his wife of 59 years Colleen, sons David and Chris and daughter Julie and nine grand children.

“It’s simply the end of an era,” NRL Chief Executive Mr David Gallop said today.

“Eric Cox was just a part of the game that we all connected with and he will be sadly missed.”

ARL Chairman, Mr Colin Love, said that Eric’s contribution to the game could not the overstated:

“He was a life member of the NSWRL, the NSW Referees Association and he was also an important part of our lives in the game.

“Eric’s experience and wisdom assisted many committees and competitions, often without public recognition and he will be sadly missed.” Funeral details will be advised when they become available.

Lions Ready For Toughest Challenge Yet

Great Britain U18 Community Lions v Australian Schoolboys
Sunday 3 December
Doncaster RUFC
KO: 2.00pm
Adults: £5 – Concessions: Free

The Great Britain U18 Community Lions are prepared for their toughest challenge yet, as they come face to face with the 2006 Australian Schoolboys.

The renowned Schoolboys have a reputation for producing future stars, and over the years have provided a major career stepping stone for players such as Brad Fittler, Jamie Lyon and Greg Inglis to name but a few.

After agonisingly losing to the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in the final minute last night, Great Britain Manager Joe Elliott is confident his chargers can raise their game further against such formidable opposition.

“Although we were desperately unlucky to lose against the AIS, I was happy with the overall performance of the side,” said Elliott.

“After playing France and then the AIS we know that the Australian Schoolboys will provide us with an even greater challenge, however I am confident we will acquit ourselves well.”

Australian Schoolboys President Bruce Wallace is also looking forward to the encounter.

“The match against the Great Britain U18 Community Lions is another first for us and I am sure it will provide another exciting challenge for our young side.”.. Learn More
