SCHOOLBOY TALENTS SET TO COLLIDE
Story & Photo By : Sally Boxall Mackay's Daily Mercury

TRADITIONAL rugby league rivals Mackay State High School and St Patrick's College go head-to-head today when the first round of the North Queensland Cowboys Super 8 schoolboys' competition kicks off at the JRL grounds.

The open competition involves eight schools from Yeppoon north to Cairns and doubles as a grading competition for the North Queensland quarter finals of the Arrive Alive Cup, a prestigious national schoolboys' competition.

Last year, the boys from Milton Street had the upper hand out of the two Mackay schools, defeating St Patrick's and finishing third in the Super 8s.

They went on to reach the North Queensland grand final of the Arrive Alive Cup, where they were knocked out by Townsville's Kirwan SHS.

St Patrick's, on the other hand, had a forgettable Super 8 season, finishing at the bottom of the table.

But, with a new rugby league academy established this year, program co-ordinator Kevin Blakey said things were definitely looking up for St Patrick's. LEARN MORE

UNDER 7 MAGPIES OVERCOME PLAYER SHORTAGE FOR THREE WINS
Cowra Guardian

Despite only having five players, the Under 7’s Cowra Magpie representative team flew into Bathurst.

Despite being down on numbers, the young Magpies took on each full strength side and came away with three wins from as many games.

Cowra 38- Blayney 16, then Cowra 26 - Bathurst St Pats 14, finishing with a great win Cowra 30 - Orange Cyms 12. The strength of the U/7’s was clearly team work, commitment, fair play and pride.

The team was well led by Josh ‘The Jet’ Pokoney who crossed the stripe for Cowra with speed and style.

Josh “Dynamite” Dominello kept the defence at bay with a great attacking raids and was on the money sharp

shooting conversions.

Ky “Tornado” Thompson took on the line and was always up and defending.

The incisive runs of Sonny ‘Zip Zip’ Eastwood had the defence back peddling all day.

Ky “The General” Johnson is the ultimate team player both in attack and defence and made life very difficult for the opposition.

The Under 7’s look forward to their next challenge and the return of their team mates, Hayden Mullins, Will Cain, Tristan Anthony and Brayden Anderson.
JETS SG BALL CUP YOUNGSTERS BOW OUT TO THE BULLDOGS.

Newtown's SG Ball Cup team bowed out of the 2009 competition when they went down 32-26 to the powerful Canterbury Bulldogs outfit, in the elimination quarter-final played at Toyota Park last Saturday.

The young Jets made a real game of it against formidable opposition and the Newtown boys can take some consolation from the fact that the Bulldogs are the standout favourites to win the 2009 title.

Coach Joel Greig and his coaching staff deserve great credit for having shaped this team of youngsters into genuine premiership contenders in what was a very intense and high-standard National under 18’s competition.

The Jets led 18-4 after 25 minutes through tries to prop Samson Manu’a, backrower Dane Atkinson and centre Jack Littlejohn but the powerful Bulldogs combination was right back in the match trailing 18-16 at halftime.

One Bulldogs team official described the game as being “like a very competitive bout between a top-class heavyweight and a brave and resourceful middleweight”.

The Bulldogs punished Newtown for any errors made in the second half but the feisty Jets were still in there counter-punching right to the final siren.

Jack Littlejohn was named as Newtown’s man of the match while others to stand out in a great team effort were second-rower Dane Atkinson, fullback Cheyse Blair, front-rowers Samson Manu’a and Ethan Lowe and lock Nick Ehsman.

Clearly there were a number of first graders of the future on display in both teams.

Newtown's last minute win in the NSW Cup match against the Auckland Vulcans on the previous weekend might have been a false dawn for the Jets, as they slumped to a depressing 48-12 trouncing at the hands of the Shellharbour Dragons at Henson Park on Anzac Day.

Newtown coach Greg Matterson admits that it's back to the drawing board as the Jets strive to find consistency and a winning formula.

The Dragons had a feast of possession in the first fifteen minutes of both halves and the consequent heavy defensive workload took a lot of the sting out of the Jets attack when they did have the ball.

Newtown has conceded tries on the opposition’s fifth tackle in more than one game this season and this has to be eradicated from the Jets' game, as well as the poor options taken at the end of their own sets of possession.

Newtown’s best were lock Jimmy Andersen, prop Stanley Waqa, backrower Rohan Ahern, fullback Iwi Hauraki and winger Kyle Lodge.

In the NSW Cup competition next weekend, the Newtown Jets play the in-form Balmain Tigers on Saturday (2nd May) at Leichhardt Oval, with this inner-western local derby timed to kick-off at 3pm.

NORTHS DEVILS RIGHT TO PLAY IN SEMI FINAL
ourfootyteam logo
Saturday's Semi Final ARL National Under 18's Comp clash between the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs and Brisbane's Northern Devils will go ahead as planned.

ourfootyteam spoke with QRL Managing Director Ross Livermore this morning and Mr. Livermore said "it's all just a storm in a tea cup"

"All the 4 (North's Devils) players that were queried about were all eligible to play, they are all registered with the QRL and the local club the Northern Devils"

We asked Mr. Livermore a hypothetical question.

If the Northern Devils win the u18's Grand Final, does that make them the 2009 SG Ball Champions?

"No, if the Northern Devils win the Grand Final, they become the Nations U 18 champions and the runner up will be the 2009 SG Ball Champions"

So if a NSW team wins the U18's Grand Final, they will be the National U 18's Champions as well as the 2009 SG Ball Champions.

ourfootyteam would like to thank Mr. Ross Livermore for taking the time to speak with us today and thank him for his interest in our breaking story.

Western Suburbs Magpies defeated the St George Dragons 26 - 24 in a quarter final Harold Matthews Cup match played at the home of the Sea Eagles Brookvale Oval on Saturday.

The match was played in fine conditions.

With ten minutes to go it looked like Wests had the game in the bag by leading 26 - 10.

Then the Dragons got fired up and realising that season 2009 was virtually over started breathing fire.

They scored three tries in that period and when Saints winger Kawana Gray scored in the corner on full time the score was Wests leading the Dragons 26 - 24 with the conversion attempt to come which would take the match into extra time.

Unfortunately for the Dragons the conversion missed and Wests now progress to next week’s semi final where they will play Parramatta.

It was a great game of rugby league and both teams gave everything they had.

Well done boys!

Wests started like a house on fire when they scored in the 3rd minute after good work by prop Pale Tanumaleu.

In the 6th minute Wests were in again after skipper Mitchell Brasington put up a huge bomb twenty metres out from the Dragons line.

Lock Corey White was Johnny on the spot to score the try and the score was now 10-0 in favour of Wests.

St George got into the action with a great try to rampaging second rower Kemuueli Seru who sprinted fifty metres to the tryline after a great short ball from five eighth Neerim Carroll.

Wests lead 16 - 6.

In the 15th minute Wests were in again after Saints gave them a number of sets on their line. Hooker Lachlan Bristow scored from dummy half five metres out to take the score to 16 - 6.

Soon after Wests were in again after another Brasington bomb which was spilled by the Dragons. The half time score was 22 - 6.

St George started the second half action with a try to Patrick Brown after a determined run ten metres out. Wests lead 22 - 10

Wests hooker Lachlan Bristow was in again two minutes later when he took on the St George defence ten metres out. Wests lead 26 - 10.

That’s when the mighty dragon fightback began.

Tries in the 50th and 57th minutes to Kiti Glymin and prop Rangi Tagaloa catapulted the score to 26 - 20 in Wests favour with only three minutes to go.

As the full time siren sounded Saints scored a try to Gray but missed the conversion. Wests won a great game 26 - 24.

They now play Parramatta in a sensational “battle of the west” semi final at St Mary's Leagues Stadium St Mary's next Saturday.

Can they beat Parramatta? Yes sir. Stay tuned for our semi final preview later in the week.

NORTH QUEENSLAND LEAGUE JUNIORS CRAZY FOR TALLIS CUP
Story & Photo By : NATALIE PEUT Townsville Bulletin
RECORD numbers have nominated for the under-10 Gorden Tallis Cup which will be played over the May Day weekend.

More than 600 junior rugby league players comprising 40 teams will compete in the two-day competition which begins May 2.

Players from Gladstone, Richmond, Hughenden, Palm Island, Edmonton, Cairns, Mossman, Mareeba, Mackay and Townsville will all take part.

The annual competition began in 2002 with just 15 teams.

Named in honour of local product and rugby league legend Gorden Tallis who played league in Townsville until he was picked up by Sydney club St George.

Tallis, known as the `Raging Bull', played elite rugby league from 1992 to 2004.

During that time he captained Australia, Queensland and the Broncos.

He also won three premierships and the Clive Churchill Medal for player of the grand final.

Organiser Jeanette Macdonald said the top three teams would win trophies – including the Gorden Tallis Cup and Reg Matthews Plate – but none of the players would go home empty-handed.

"Everyone will take home a memento from the competition," Macdonald said.

"The games start at 9.30am on Saturday and conclude on Sunday with the grand final at 4pm. The presentation will follow at 5pm."

The competition was established with the aim of bringing together teams from across the region for the enjoyment of the code.

Games will be 20 minutes with the final to be a 50-minute match.

"It should be great weekend for everyone involved and it's a chance for the players to learn and develop their game against other players from around the area," she said.
POWER INTO DECIDER
The Northern Daily Leader
THE OXLEY Pioneers will defend their Country Under 18s Championships title in the curtain raiser to the City versus Country clash at Orange on May 8 after an unconvincing 32 - 28 win over the Western Rams in Saturday’s semi-final at Scully Park.

They will face the Central Hunter Power in the decider after they beat Newcastle 36 - 26 in the earlier game.

It’s a great result for local development with nine Group 4 players in the Oxley side and eight Group 21 players in the Chris Brennan-coached Power team.

But it could have been very different with both games going down to the wire.

Oxley’s game was billed as a pseudo-final with it and the Rams touted as the two best sides in the competition despite the semi-final draw.

But it was a frustrating game for both teams.

Oxley never trailed the Rams after leading 12 - nil early but mistakes and a lack of intensity in defence kept the strong Western side in the contest and the visitors threatened to ruin the champions’ run.

Farrer’s Cameron Rodgers’ try gave Oxley an 18-12 halftime lead but Western levelled after the break.

Two quick tries to Gunnedah’s Jai Smith and Macleay prop Danny Cooper’s second of the day put Oxley up by eight but again the Rams struck back.

Moree’s Jerome Hammond then provided the touch of class the Pioneers needed with a chip and chase try that made it 32-24 and even one more Western four-pointer was not enough and Oxley survived a scrappy game.

“Our attack has always been brilliant,” coach Peter Barrett said.

“But in defence we didn’t muscle up.

“Our defence let us down and then we started making mistakes.

“We started with three sets and didn’t drop the ball and they stuck to the game plan and it was 12-nil.

“But as soon as we dropped the ball we had a ball go into touch and two more mistakes we dropped off in defence.”

By contrast the Central Hunter win over Newcastle was just as close but more entertaining.

Both sides went try for try all game with the Power never behind until late in the game when Newcastle took a 26 - 24 lead.

But Singleton pair Scott Griffiths and Kerrod Holland scored a try each in the dying stages to earn a deserved win for the Power.

Canterbury Bulldogs are through to the next round of the National Comp after both the SG Ball & Harold Matthew's Cup side won against tough opposition at Shark Park.

The Manly SeaEagles proved last weeks victory over the St. George Dragons in the SG Ball was no fluke either with a gutsy 36 - 18 come from behind victory against the Townsville Stingers

The weekends big shock comes from Brisbane where the Parramatta Eels played the Northern Devils from Brisbane only to get flogged after leading 14 - 4 at half time.

So now we see both the undefeated NSW SG Ball team goooneeee. So much for being rewarded for an excellent footy season - Plenty more 1/4 final stories and FoTo'S soon and on Sunday.

DEVILS U18S SEND EELS PACKING
Story By : QRL
THE Norths Devils have produced a clinical second-half performance to bundle the Parramatta Eels out of the ARL Under 18 Finals.

Inspired by classy playmaker Bryce Hegarty and powerful prop Jesse Rogers, the Devils blitzed the Eels in the second half to run out 26 - 20 winners at Brisbane’s Langlands Park today.

The final scoreline probably flattered the visitors, who scored a consolation try in the final minute after being thoroughly outplayed in the final stanza.

The Eels took a 14 - 4 lead into the break but they were soon on the back-foot after speedy Devils winger Lachlan Maranta got Norths back into the contest with a great solo try following a set move from a scrum.

The Devils missed the conversion but they didn’t miss their next opportunity.

It was soon 14 - all after Rogers crashed over under the posts and Hegarty landed the conversion.
Hegarty took control of the match following the early loss of Zak Bishop to injury.

The clever five-eighth cut the Eels’ big men to pieces with his clever passing game and slick footwork.

He laid on Rogers’ second try to put the Devils 20-14 in front.

Determined Norths hooker Byron Creighton sealed the match for the Devils with seven minutes remaining when he snuck over from dummy half.

Centre Aaron Whitchurch produced a powerhouse display for the Devils, who will now march on to the ARL semi-finals.

In the Under 16 quarter final at Langlands Park, Parramatta ended the Norths Devils’ campaign with a 38 - 24 win in front of a vocal crowd.

At Sydney's Toyota Park tonight, the Bulldogs beat the Townsville Stingers 38-16 in the Under 16 quarter final.

Manly beat the Stingers 36-18 in the Under 18 match.

YOUTHS TASTE SUCCESS
Sydney Morning Herald
THE Melbourne Storm's inaugural under-18s team has been making a splash all year and they say they have no intention of stopping.

From the first-up win against Newcastle in its first season in the SG Ball competition to finishing fourth after the home-and-away season and to making the final eight, the team of mostly home-grown talent has exceeded expectations.

The Storm will today again play Newcastle, this time in the quarter-finals at Brookvale Oval in Sydney.

Coach Kim Williams said he was proud of what the team had achieved this year, with some players facing 18-hour days for away games in Sydney as they travel to and from by train from places such as Mooroolbark.

"The boys' level of professionalism and dedication to this has been unbelievable and you sometimes forget how young they are because they just carry themselves so well," Williams said. "There's never any complaints and they just get the job done."

Williams said the initial expectation for the team was just to make the first week of the finals.

But, he said the team proved that it could mix it on a weekly basis with those from the league's heartland regions and goals were reassessed.

"It's been better than we ever could have imagined, I think.

But as we have gone along, we have certainly improved pretty steadily and we definitely reassessed our goals as the season went along and there is a genuine belief that we can go the whole way now.

"Over the past six weeks, every week every player has performed well individually and certainly as a group we've been pretty outstanding."

Prop Matthew Constantinou said the team always believed it could be a force in the competition and was looking forward to this big challenge against Newcastle.

"They were a real big, rough bunch of guys and really dominated, and we learnt quickly from our mistakes to win (the first-round game)," Constantinou said. "I think (today) will be a really interesting test for us as it's probably one of our biggest challenge yet because Newcastle play a very similar game to us."

NATIONAL JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVES - QUARTER FINALS

State of Origin football starts early tomorrow for NSW and Queensland’s best junior teams as they face off for a spot in the inaugural National Junior Representative semi-finals.

And it’s not just the game’s traditional heavyweights in with a chance of achieving national champion status with Melbourne, Central Coast and Newcastle all making it through to this weekend’s quarter finals.

The quarter finals will see Queensland’s best in Townsville and Brisbane Norths go up against the Bulldogs and Parramatta respectively, with the Eels travelling to Langlands Park deep in the heart of enemy territory.

Sydney’s Toyota Stadium and Brookvale Oval host the remaining quarter final match-ups.

“Fans at these games are seeing our future State of Origin players, there’s no doubt about that,” NSWRL General Manager Geoff Carr said today.

“Many of the players are already contracted to senior NRL clubs and they represent the very best of junior Rugby League talent in the country.

“In the years down the track there will certainly be a selection of them who will push for representative honours as they mature.

“Plenty of today’s Origin stars were brought up through the Junior Representative system.

“It’s a terrific development pathway which has only grown stronger with the introduction of Queensland, Northern Territory and Melbourne teams.”

CLUB CLEARS RED TAPE IN TIME FOR SEASON
Dubbo's Daily Liberal
Junior league players in Wellington could be back on the playing field as early as next week.

Club president Brent Connor said yesterday that all being well Wellington will be included in the Dubbo and District Junior Rugby League draw for Saturday week, May 2.

Earlier the Wellington club came under notice from the Department of Fair Trading when its incorporation of the club was cancelled after they failed to lodge annual statements for the past three years.

With that happening, Wellington’s application to field teams in the Dubbo and district junior competition was knocked back.

However Brent Connor said everything was close to being sorted out and all issues will have been finalised by the end of this week.

“We will be playing under the banner of the Wellington Cowboys PCYC Club and be back in the competition draw from May 2,” he said.

“It’s been a long, drawn out and unfortunate situation but hopefully it has now been sorted out and we get the kids back onto the playing field.

“Unfortunately because of all this mess some boys have been approached by Dubbo clubs and we will be making an effort to get them back on our books.”

Connor said the Cowboys would field teams in grades under-7, 8, 9, 11, 14 and 16, although there is a grey area with the under-14s.

“We hope there will be enough kids for the under-14s but we won’t know that for certain until after our registrations close next Tuesday,” he said.

“After winning the under-10s last year we’re also looking for more under-11 players.

“The next thing we need to have happen is to have all the kids come along to training at Kennard Park next Tuesday (April 28) from 4.30pm till 5.30pm for registration.

“Parents will need to bring along a birth certificate or give us an assurance that they will have one to us before we play.

“This is most important.”

SCHOOL DAYS TO CLASS ACTS
Sydney's Daily Telegraph
FROM high school classmates to Broncos teammates in just over two years, it's been a giddy transition for Marsden SHS graduates Israel Folau and Antonio Winterstein.

Brisbane's wing duo rounded out their education in Marsden's Year 12 class in November 2006.

In rugby league terms, it was a fertile year group, also including Rabbitohs No. 7 Chris Sandow and, until senior year, Storm utility Joseph Tomane. The star quartet were hot on the heels of 2005 graduate and Titans centre sensation Esi Tonga, while Test vice-captain Cameron Smith is also an old boy.

Tomorrow night, Folau and Winterstein suit up against Parramatta in a Friday night football blockbuster at Suncorp Stadium.

Next week, they will shelve their newfound rock-star status to brush up on "yes miss" and "no sir" in a visit back to present Marsden's 2009 Open A team their football jumpers.

Yesterday, the schoolyard buddies told The Daily Telegraph it was surreal to be playing together for the club they idolised in the classroom.

"It's pretty weird . . . we both never thought we'd be playing together in the same team, especially not the Broncos," Folau said. "We were only there a couple of years ago so it will be a big buzz to go back and see our old teachers."

Folau declared Winterstein was the better student but the pair reserved the title of cheekiest to Sandow, not present to defend himself.

"Israel and I were both pretty quiet," Winterstein said.

In addition to catching up with their old teachers, Folau and Winterstein will also get the chance next week to spy on their little brothers. Two of Folau's siblings (Eni, Year 12 and Johnny, Year 10) are present-day schoolboys at Marsden. So, too, are the younger brothers of both Winterstein (Francis, Year 10) and Smith (Matthew, Year 12).

Marsden rugby league program co-ordinator Kim Bray revealed that talent, not talk, had always been the speciality of the quietly spoken Broncos wing pair.

"I couldn't get boo out of Israel and Ant wasn't much better, they were both pretty quiet and studious," Bray said. "Chrissy was always a bit more cocky. He was very outspoken but he could back it up.

"They were all athletes.

"We could always tell Israel was something special, but we didn't think he'd be this special this quick.

"We always said he was like a stallion, always out in front, the other boys running next to him."

ARL QUARTER-FINALS HIT BRISBANE

HAVING tamed the Townsville Stingers, the Norths Devils are now chasing the high-profile scalp of the Parramatta Eels.

The Devils meet the Eels in Under 16 and Under 18 matches at Brisbane’s Langlands Park on Saturday.

Both games are quarter finals of the new ARL Finals series which provides the two best Queensland teams in each age group with a dream opportunity to take on the leading New South Wales teams.

The Townsville Stingers are also in the thick of the quarter final action on Saturday. But both Stingers teams face a daunting road trip.

The Stingers travel to Sydney to play the Bulldogs in Under 16s and Manly in Under 18s. The two games will be played at Toyota Stadium (5pm & 6.30pm).

Norths’ Under 16 clash against the Eels at Langlands Park on Saturday gets underway at 2pm and will be followed by the Under 18 quarter final at 3.30pm.

Norths limp into the quarter final against the Sydney big guns on the back of a close 20-18 win over the Stingers at Bishop Park last Saturday.

The Devils did just enough to sneak through as Queensland’s top side after tries from Michael Lucas, Aaron Whitchurch, Tyrone Lockrey and Fala Leaaetoa.

RAIDERS AND MCDONALD’S FORM STRONG LOCAL PARTNERSHIP

Rugby League in the Canberra region has been strengthened today, with the announcement of a new partnership between the Canberra Raiders, the Canberra Region Junior Rugby League and McDonald’s ACT.

This exciting new partnership will see McDonald’s ACT become the naming rights sponsor for the junior Rugby League competition in Canberra as well as benefiting the Raiders in a number of ways both on and off the field for the next three years.

Canberra Raiders CEO Don Furner said the Raiders were proud to be getting on board with McDonald’s for the next three seasons and looked forward to working with a professional organisation to take Rugby League forward at a grass roots level.

“McDonald’s is a fantastic business which employs over 2,000 people locally here in Canberra and we look forward to their support of our strong junior competition and at a senior level,” Mr Furner said. “Having a strong junior competition is vital for the development of the Raiders at a senior level and this new partnership ensures the continued support of our junior rugby league players.”

Local owner and Licensee of McDonald’s Woden, Weston, Manuka and Fyshwick restaurants, Craig Coleman, said McDonald’s ACT was looking forward to the new partnership.

“As a McDonald’s Licensee and local business owner in the ACT I am really proud to support the Canberra Raiders and Junior Rugby League in the ACT,” Mr Coleman said. “McDonald’s is committed to supporting rugby league from its grassroots to professional levels.”

The new partnership also involves the support of Mini Matches at Raiders home games where all participants receive a t-shirt and mini footy, while the Raiders senior playing group will continue their strong involvement with McDonald’s popular McHappy Day raising money for Ronald McDonald House Charities.

The Parramatta Eels have beaten the Cronulla Sharks 38-22 in a sensational SG Ball fixture at CUA Stadium Penrith yesterday in fine conditions.

There were twelve tries scored. Seven to Parramatta and five to the Sharks in a great game of football that was a credit to both clubs involved.

Cronulla lock Tyrone Peachey was first to score after only two minutes of play. He chased a grubber kick from star half back Chad Townsend into the Parramatta in-goal and touched down.

The Eels hit back eleven minutes later when big Queenslander Pat O’Hanlon using basketball skills dunks a pass to centre Rory Brien who dummied his way to the line.

Five minutes later Parramatta’s Wagga import and half back Josh Murray put up a cross field kick for winger Thomas Vandermade to score in the corner.

In the 22nd minute Eels skipper Kyle Fraser makes a half break and then off loads to five eighth Jaydin Tavita who raced twenty five metres to score a good try. Parramatta lead 18-4.

Two minutes later Sharks winger Tyler Jarden scored a try after a backline move involving decoy players bamboozled the Parramatta defence. Five minutes later Cronulla centre Joseph Rokoqo dives over from dummy half and the score is now 18-12 in the Eels favour at half time.

The score could easily have been 18-16 had two Chad Townsend conversion attempts not hit the upright.

The second half started with O’Hanlon making a good burst only to be brought down close to the Sharks line. From first receiver Josh Murray dummied the defence and went over for a try.

In the 42nd minute Eels centre Olomanu Usini scored after gratefully accepting a pass from Fraser who retrieved a spilled bomb from a Sharks player.

Four minutes later Rory Brien snags his second try for the game after fullback Chris Ulugia chimed into the line.

Brien showed good pace to race to the line. The Australian AIS player is starting to show good form after he blew Newtown off the park last week.

At 32-12 the game looked over. But try telling that to the Sharks players.

At the 53rd minute James “Hitman” Hasson scored another constructive try after two decoy plays again confused the Parramatta defence.

Four minutes later they were in again through the efforts of winger Ben Stratton who was the recipient of a great cut out pass from five eight Penani Manu. The score is now 32-22 in the Eels favour.

Parramatta finished off the scoring in the 63rd minute after Ulugia made a line break from a scrum 80 metres from the Sharks line and linked with Tavita who flew 60 metres to the line to score a great try. Final score 38-22.

Cronulla had many heroes. None better than half Chad Townsend and hooker Dane Malone. James “Hitman” Hasson also tried hard and I like the look of their North Coast import, big prop Joel Tubbs.

Parramatta had defensive problems yesterday. They are a big team and are troubled when opposition teams play an up-tempo game like the Sharks did yesterday.

They play Norths Devils, Queenslands top team next week in Brisbane. Centre Olomanu Usini who usually plays second row looked ponderous in defence yesterday.

He will probably go back to the forwards next week as gun lock Krys Freeman was injured and reports indicate he may miss the remainder of the finals series.

In my view the Eels need to get some genuine backline players into their team if they are to advance beyond next week. They are relying on playing big forwards such as Jacob Loko and Usini out in the backline and it is causing problems in defence.

Time will tell.

ROOSTERS NO MATCH FOR BABY EELS
ourfootyteam logo
Parramatta Eels defeated the Sydney Roosters 50-6 in the Harold Matthews Cup fixture played at CUA Stadium Penrith on Saturday. The match was played in fine conditions.

The same two teams locked horns in a round 9 game last week with the Eels winning 38-16. That game was closer than the scores indicated as the Roosters asked plenty of questions about Parramatta’s defence.

Saturday was a different story. This match was one sided and the power in offence and defence was on display from this Parramatta team who have not lost a game this year.

Full credit must go to the Eels players and their coaching staff who got this team up for the game. It is easy for a team to come out and play against an opposition they beat by twenty points the week before and perhaps just go through the motions.

But this Parramatta team came out on to the field fired up and they delivered! However they are in a spot of trouble as two players are on report for biting and a tackle that went beyond the horizontal.

Biting has no place in rugby league and if the player is found guilty he should face a lengthy stint on the sideline.

The scoring spree started in the 10th minute after crafty halfback Sean McGuiness put up a cross field kick for his winger Kelepi Tanginoa to score.

A few minutes later Tanginoa was in again after centre Vai Toutai broke the line and drew the man with a neat pass. Parramatta leads 10-0.

The Roosters hit back in the 22nd minute when gun half back Nathan Antonelli caught the Eels napping and dived over from dummy half. Try was converted and the Eels leads 10-6.

And there ended the Roosters season.

After that it was all Parramatta. They piled on another seven tries to demolish their opposition.

26 min – Five eighth Troy Errington chips and regathers. Score 16-6.

34 min – Vai Toutai scores after a great individual run 10 metres out from the Roosters line. He must have had spiders on him! Score 22-6.

38 min – Lock Fraser Masinamua scores after fielding a well placed cross field kick. Score 26-6.

45 min – Tricky winger “Deadly” Derek Golding scores after fielding a cross field kick from Sean McGuinness. Score 32-6.

54 min – prop Junior Paulo scores after a strong charge 10 metres from the Roosters line. Score 38-6.

56 min – a strong run by Vai Toutai 20 metres out from the Roosters line leads to another try. Score 44-6.

60 min – forward Adam McMillan scores in the corner and the fulltime score is Parramatta 50 Roosters 6.

Parramatta now goes on to next week’s quarter finals where they will play the strong Brisbane-based Norths Devils at Langlands Park Brisbane.

Another feature of last Saturday’s game was the referee Casey Campbell. She refereed the game with aplomb. It’s great for the game of rugby league that we are attracting competent women into our referee ranks. Well done Casey!

MAKOS SHOW TALENT IN PRESEASON

All Marsden State High School Rugby League teams have had a great start to the year with all teams registering solid wins.

The year 8 boys have had good wins against St Peter Claver College and Sunnybank and fought hard for a draw against rivals Palm Beach Currumbin.

The side has a number of talented halves in Jesse Wilkinson, Jesse Hodgeson and Ricki Bennett all of which are complemented with a number of strong running forwards and backs.

The powerful Dion McClymont, Moustapha Annewetey and Sean Ashcroft are destroying teams with their strong defence and powerful surges.

2009 has brought with it changes to the Year 9 side with a number of new arrivals at the school including strong front rower Nesler Paane-Taufa and big outside back Cody Kennedy The new arrivals make this side the most balanced at Marsden with hookers David Leapai and Justin McKenna organising the ruck and talented half Brenko Lee running the team it is sure to have success in 09.

The ‘rep’ year of year 10 saw an unbelievable 10 players make the Met East team to contest the State carnival in May. Early season form against bogey sides Palm Beach Currumbin and Keebra Park suggest a big year ahead for these boys.

With an amazing array of talent including power forwards Caleb Timu and Eddie Tuifao a lot of responsibility falls on the shoulders of speedy half Rhys Benney to direct the side around the park. If the many individuals can work together and learn to play for each other then success is only around the corner.

The Open side of 2009 started thin but late arrivals to the school have boosted the playing ranks and early season form against Sunnybank and Wavell show surprising good form.

Half Tony Harrold is directing the team well and shifting the ball well to strike backs Tautau Moga and Junior Kumar. Powerful forwards Eni Folau and Masi Sivoinavatu are complemented by work horses Matt Smith and Ben Apelu. If injuries are avoided then a predicted solid season for the Senior boys could turn into a very successful one.

Good luck to all the Makos boys for 2009!!!

TITANS JUNIORS OUT OF FINALS
ourfootyteam logo
The dream run of the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans’ junior representative sides has come to an end after they were eliminated from the finals race in Sydney at the weekend.

The Harold Matthews (under-16s) and SG Ball (under-18s) sides had performed strongly all year to finish in fourth and fifth in their respective competitions at the end of the regular season.

However, both bowed out of the finals at the weekend, with the Harold Matthews side losing to Central Coast 36-30 and the SG Ball side suffering a 40-12 loss to Newcastle.

Despite the results, it was an encouraging season for both sides and yet another indication that the club’s future is in good hands.

Harold Matthews coach Aaron Zimmerle said there were many positives to come out of his side’s inaugural season in the NSW-based competition, adding he was already looking forward to next season.

"Obviously we would like to be playing finals footy next week but the experiences we have had this year means that all of us, players and coaching staff will be taking our games to a higher level in the future and that is what its all about,’’ he said.

At half-time the scores were level at 16-all and the Titans were well placed to fulfil their finals ambitions. However, a three-try blitz by the Storm saw the score balloon out to 32-16 within the space of ten minutes and this in effect spelled the end for the Titans boys.

"We were competing well until that passage of play and although it is all credit to the boys that they fought their way back to 36-30, our lack of focus really cost us today. Consistency is the key in any level of rugby league and our lapses in concentration meant that the game got away from us.’’

Zimmerle said that while he was proud of the entire squad, Cory McGrady and Jack Durheim deserved special mention.

The Titans’ SG Ball side were in the hunt until halftime against ninth-placed Newcastle, trailing 18-12.

But the Knights ran in four unanswered tries after the break to seal the Titans’ fate and end their run in the competition.

A handful of SG Ball players are now likely step-up and train with the NYC (under-20s) squad for the remainder of the year.

An awards night will be held for the junior sides in the coming months.
DEVILS FACE SLIPPERY EELS

THE Norths Devils' Under 16 and Under 18 teams meet the Parramatta Eels in the ARL quarter finals at Brisbane’s Langlands Park next Saturday (April 25).

The Devils enter the National Finals in red-hot form after winning the Queensland Finals of the Cyril Connell Cup (U16) and Mal Meninga Cup (U18) on Saturday.

Norths beat the Townsville Stingers 42-30 in the Under 16 clash.

The Devils were also too hot to handle in the Under 18 decider, running out 20-18 winners in front of a good crowd at Bishop Park.

The Townsville Stingers will also contest the ARL quarter finals next Saturday.

JACOB MILLER BEATS TIGERS ON HIS OWN
ourfootyteam logo
The Newtown Jets SG Ball team comprehensively beat the Balmain Tigers 40 - 18 in the round of 16 clash at CUA Stadium Penrith in fine conditions yesterday.

But everyone at the ground was talking about the performance of classy Jets half back Jacob Miller. He scored five tries and kicked six goals for a personal tally of 32 points.

The surfie from the Northern Rivers alternative culture town of Mullumbimby is no hippy.

This boy can play football and he is absolutely lethal close to an opposition tryline.

Just look at some of the teams he has represented over many years. It started when he represented NSW PSSA Under 12 Team in 2004.

Three years later he made the NSW CHS Under 15 Team that were national champions in Adelaide.

Then last year he scored two trys for NSW 16’s against Queensland in a curtain raiser before the State of Origin clash.

Yesterday the Tigers started like a house on fire after good tries to skipper Patrick Politoni and flying winger Faleula Finau in the 4th and 6th minutes of play.

Finau’s effort was superb. He supported a linebreak by team mate Tim Simone and he raced 60 metres to score a try.

He has been an unsung hero for the Tigers this year becoming the competition’s leading try scorer with sixteen touch downs. Yesterday made it 17!

His clash with Newtown’s flying winger Michael Mizrahie was much anticipated with Finau winning on points. He is not far from representative honours.

At the 18th minute Balmain were leading 12 - 0 and looking comfortable.

Then that man Miller commenced his ascendancy. He dummied ten metres out from Balmain’s line and with a determined run scored the first of his five tries.

Five minutes later he was at it again close to the Tigers line with another effort full of determination and speed. The score is now 12 all.

Politoni was in the action soon after with an individual try jinking his way to the line from five metres out.

The Tigers led 18 - 12 at half time. And there ends the Tigers season for 2009.

They decided to go to sleep and didn’t compete in the second half. They allowed the Jets halves Jacob Miller and Tom Dawney to dictate the game and they never got a look in.

Coach David Brooks must be scratching his head at the Tigers performance. They looked like a million dollars at times this season. They were the only team to beat Parramatta during the normal round games. But they are an enigma and their performances inconsistent.

In the 39th minute star forward Boyd Cordner cut through flimsy Tiger defence and passed to five eight Dawney who raced 30 metres to the line.

Five minutes later Balmain rake Dean Parata drops the ball and a scrum is set on the 10 metre line. Boyd Cordner picks up the ball from the back of the scrum and goes the blind. He draws the fullback and passes to a flying Jacob Miller who scores a very crafty try.

Coach Joel Greig must be smiling!

In the 59th minute Newtown started playing Fijian rugby. Twenty metres out from the Tigers line Newtown decide to chance their arm. Instead of kicking on the fifth tackle they run the ball to the right side.

Nothing on there but they decide to keep passing and sent the ball back infield.

After a passing flurry the ball finishes in the hands of you know who. Miller finishes off for his 4th try. The score is now 28 - 18 in Newtown’s favour.

Three minutes later Newtown winger Paul Rokolati scored a good try after centre Asipeli Fine broke through the now non-existent Tigers defence.

Miller wasn’t finished yet. Four minutes from the end Dawney again breaks the line. He comes to Tigers fullback Hayden Crouch. He looks around for support but there is no one there.

Should he kick ahead or just take the tackle. He has a second look around for support. Here comes Miller!

Miller took the ball on the burst and sprinted 40 metres to the line to make the final score 40-18.

Newtown now play the Bulldogs in next week’s quarter final. But today, it was all about Jacob Miller.

MANLY MATTS PAVE WAY FOR FUTURE
Story & Photo's By pk / ourfootyteam logo
Like their NRL team last year the exploits of this years junior representatives from the Manly Rugby League Club send a clear message to their rivals; we’re back!

Just look at yesterday’s results from the round of 16 as evidence in point. Manly’s SG Ball team shocked the rugby league world by defeating the previously unbeaten St George team 34-20. Not a bad result considering it was 1st v 12th.

They remain alive and go into a quarter final match next week against Queensland’s Townsville Stingers in Sydney. Norths Devils defeated Townsville Stingers 20-18 in a close fought battle of the Mal Meninga Cup yesterday.

For once everyone is supporting the maroon and white from Sydney’s northern peninsula against the might of Queensland. Go you good things!

On the other hand Manly’s third placed Harold Matthews Cup team bowed out in an inglorious fashion to the tenth placed St George Dragons 62-4 at Campbelltown Stadium yesterday.

It was a shock result because only last week the Sea Eagles had defeated the Dragons 20-16 at Win Jubilee Oval in a round 9 clash.

Manly’s coach Lee Addison took a philosophical view after the game, “A team that finishes 3rd should expect to beat a team that finishes 10th, but because each team doesn't play every other, the table is never a completely true indicator of the lie of the land.

And in a show of good sportsmanship he added, “I must give credit to St George and their coach, Graeme Wynn.

We spoke all week about the fact that St George is a better side than their 10th position suggests and we were under no illusions that just because we beat them in round 9, we were going to beat them today.”

Addison went on to mention that we should celebrate the closeness of the competition and sounded a warning for Western Suburbs the Dragon’s quarter final opponents next week. "I have no complaints about the top 12 system.

As I said, St George is a better side than 10th and they proved that today; emphatically!”

After their shock defeat yesterday it would be a shame not to reflect on what a great year it has been for the team and the club.

As ourfootyteam.com reported last week it was the best Matthews Cup performance in the club’s history. At least as good as their 1997 team’s effort in also coming third.

Manly attract players from far and wide to play with them. Many Norths juniors are attracted to play for a club with an NRL team.

This year they had Brendan Hurd, Nathan and Bradley Wall from the Berowra Wallabys and Michael Edwards from the Asquith Magpies. Lincoln Tubridy is from the Central Coast club Berkeley Vale.

Addison does not want his side remembered for one bad game. “I want to give my boys a massive rap.

They have played above themselves all year and wrote themselves into the history books of the club and no one can ever take that away from them.

One bad day at the office does not make us a bad side. It's been a very memorable year for all players and staff, and we all have friends, memories and shared experiences we will all share forever. I am very proud of my team!”

Well done on a great and historic year Manly Harold Matthews team.

EELS LOCK IN NEWEST MORTIMER
Story By : Sydney's Daily Telegraph
ourfootyteam logo
JUST over a week after cutting loose first-choice halfback Brett Finch, Parramatta on Friday secured the heir apparent to his No. 7 jumper, teenage star Daniel Mortimer.

Mortimer, son of Bulldogs great Peter Mortimer, was one of four re-signings for the Eels ahead of tomorrow's match against the Bulldogs.

Joel Reddy, Matthew Keating and Toyota Cup prop Mitchell Allgood have also agreed to new deals.

Toyota Cup skipper Mortimer, 19, has been earmarked as the long-term replacement for Finch, who this week agreed to play out the remainder of the 2009 season with Melbourne.

But Mortimer has been forced to cool his heels in the under-20s for another week at least, with coach Daniel Anderson sticking with Jeff Robson for the Bulldogs clash.

Reddy and Keating both re-signed for another two years and the duo will be in Anderson's run-on side on Sunday, Keating's 29th consecutive first grade game following his debut in round one last season.

"These are important signings," Anderson said.

"Our juniors are a strength for the club and it's encouraging they are choosing to continue their careers here."

The Eels are yet to re-sign exciting Toyota Cup half Albert Kelly, a cousin of Greg Inglis who is reportedly a Melbourne Storm target.

JNR REPS QUARTER FINALS DRAW FOR NEXT WEEK
/ ourfootyteam logo
Looking ahead to next weeks quarter finals ourfootyteam.com can advise our readers that it will look something like the following.

While the top twelve teams in the Harold Matthews Cup and SG Ball fight out to remain in contention for next week, Queensland is also going through their process of deciding in order which two of their teams join the NSW clubs in the quarter finals.

Norths Devils (Southern Conference) will fight it out against Townsville Stingers (Northern Conference) in both the Cyril Connell Cup (under 16) and Mal Meninga Cup (under 18) this weekend.

From these games the two runners up will travel to Sydney next week and play against the winners of Saturday’s NSW games St George (1st) v Manly (12th) in SG Ball and Bulldogs (1st) v Souths (12th) in Harold Matthews.

The two winners in Queensland will host the winners of these two NSW games, Parramatta (2nd) v Cronulla (11th) in SG Ball and Parramatta (2nd) v Roosters (11th) in Harold Matthews.

So not only are the boys in those teams playing for a quarter final spot but also a trip to sunny Queensland! Ahh....Queensland. Beautiful one day – perfect the next!

Then we will have the other NSW teams fighting it out in the other matches. In Harold Matthews the winner of Manly (3rd) v Dragons (10th) will play the winner of Western Suburbs (6th) v Penrith (7th) while the winner of Gold Coast (4th) v Central Coast (9th) will play the winner of Newcastle (5th) v Cronulla (8th).

In SG Ball it will look like this. The winner of Bulldogs (3rd) v Penrith (10th) will play the winner of Newtown (6th) v Balmain (7th) while the winner of Melbourne (4th) v Illawarra (9th) will play the winner of Gold Coast (5th) v Newcastle (8th).

Many thanks to the Queensland Rugby League for assisting us with this information.
