ST. JOHN'S WOODLAWN TAKES COCHRANE CUP FINAL
Match Report
cccSt John’s College Woodlawn pulled off a stunning second half display to win their second Cochrane Cup in three years. After being behind 12-8 at half time they stormed home to defeat St Aquinas College Menai 30-12 at Leichhardt Oval in Sydney.

The second half performance included five unanswered tries and the demonstration of silky skills, wonderful running lines and impressive discipline.

Coach, Brian Battese, recognized the fact that the team did not perform to its own high standards in the first half, dropping the occasional ball and giving away silly penalties.

The try scorers included a hat trick from Chris Binge as well as tries by Jirra Breckenridge, Sean Cox, Mitchell Krause and Jerome Tobin. All tries were scored in the corner making it difficult for Chris Binge who was only able to convert one of the tries.

The Cochrane Cup is a State wide Rugby League competition for the U14 sides from all New South Wales Independent Schools. The team, according to Glenn Roff Principal at the College, is one of the best that has represented Woodlawn in recent years. The side has strength, subtlety and depth. Woodlawn went through to the final last Thursday after defeating Gilroy College from Castle Hill 42-0. The players have had an outstanding season in every respect. Their success augers well for the performance of this team in their senior years.

St John's Woodlawn CollegeSt. John's Woodlawn are again the COCHRANE CUP CHAMPIONS.
Congratulations to all the boys who played in this years Cochrane Cup Grand Final and the whole Cochrane Cup Tournement. In this years Grand Final both Schools St. John's Woodlawn and Aquinas College Menai played the game showing great skill and plenty of sportsmanship.
After a very tight first half where the scores were 12 - 8 in favour of eventual winners St. John's Woodlawn, the game took a turn in the second half and St. John's backs recieved more ball and took their scoring opportunities. Stand out player young Chris Binge capped off a great game with 3 tries and just a lazy conversion too. A total of 9 tries were scored by both sides in this fast school boy game.
This is St. John's Woodlawn's 3rd Cochrane Cup Grand Final in a row against 3 different Sutherland Shire Schools, which shows all these schools are doing well again each year.
St. John's Woodlawn Principle Mr. Roff said " this years boys are a nice bunch, they also felt they could do better than last year, they are very proud of them selves at the moment " Well who can blame them. THEY ARE THE CHAMP'S (OFT Media)
we will hopefully have match reports from both schools early next week for you to read.

St John’s College Woodlawn’s open rugby league side tore St Paul’s Kempsey apart 52-nil in the quarter final of the state-wide Cochrane Cup on Friday.

Hooker Sean Cox and second rower Braston Brewer-Charles thrived in the wet conditions, with each crossing twice in the the comprehensive 10 try victory. Despite the heavy rain coach Brian Battese encouraged his charges to throw the ball around.

“The slippery ball had more chance of being knocked out in collisions up front and less in the one-on-ones out wide,” Battese said. “So I asked them to throw it around.”

Needless to say the tactic was an inspired one as the Woodlawn team set up a 18-nil half time lead then ran away with it as the match opened up. Woodlawn will now go on to play either a Central Coast or a Sydney metropolitan side in the semis.

St John’s won the Cochrane Cup in 2004 and were runners up in 2005. 2006 could easily bring the College some more silverware.

NEW STATE CHAMPIONS INTERRUPT SUCCESSIVE CUP TITLE BID

St Patrick’s College, Sutherland Under 14s St Patrick’s College, Sutherland Under 14s Rugby League Team took out their first State title after easily beating the defending champions St John’s College, Lismore 31–4 in the 2005 Cochrane Cup.

The new State champions progressed to the finals in five consecutive games in the Catholic schools statewide knockout competition for U14s.

Team manager Lou Paganosaid it was a sweet revenge to beat the defending premiers and take the Cup for the first time. “It was a great effort to seethe boys go all the way this year, especially after losing to St John’s by only two points in the semi-finals last year and having travel-led a long way,” Mr Pagano said.

St John’s Coach and former Canterbury Bulldogs player Brian Battese said he was disappointed in his team’s performance, and the better team had won on the day. “They (St Patrick’s) played strongly all game and never let us into the match. All credit must go to them for a fine all-round performance,” he said.

The boys impressed onlookers Paul Sironen and representatives from the Cronulla Sharks, Craig Priestley and Tony Cain, as well as 380 supporters.

Man of the Match was half-back Jarrod Boyle, while the try scorers were Luke Pickerd (2), Chris Way, Hayden Smith, Jarrod Boyle and Lawrence Micalizzi
