TROYDEN ON AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLBOYS ASSAULT

A UNIQUE adventure will start for Wavell State High School student Troyden Watene-Edwards this week when he travels to New Zealand to represent the Australian Schoolboys rugby league team.

Watene-Edwards, 17, has New Zealand heritage and admitted it would be odd having so many of his family coming to support him playing in the green and gold.

``I was born here but my whole family is from there,'' the Aspley Bronco said.

``Despite that they're proud and I know my parents want me to play for Australia, not New Zealand.

``I reckon we'll go well, we've got a few big boys but the Kiwis will always be tough over there.''

The tour of New Zealand is the last step in what has been a blockbuster of a year for the highly-rated former Arana Hills junior.

Not only has Watene-Edwards been playing for his high school, he's also broken into the Queensland Cup team at Aspley and secured himself a deal with the Brisbane Broncos.

But after a short time away from the football field, he said he was itching to be part of the two-test schoolboys tour.

``It has been a tough year and I did get a few niggling injuries towards the end but I'm feeling good for the break,'' he said.

``It should be a good trip I've been looking forward to it all year, it was a goal of mine to make the team after missing out last year and it'll be good fun to play against New Zealand.''

And the action won't stop following the tour, with the Year 12 student likely to return to his school exams before heading out into the wider world.

``I've got an apprenticeship lined up with the Broncos so that should give me something else to do besides football,'' he said.

But with the new national under-20 competition to begin next year, don't be surprised if Watene-Edwards again has his non-football time limited in 2008.

The Australian Schoolboys tour of New Zealand starts with the first test in Auckland on Saturday and then the second and final test in Rotorua on October 6.

YEAR 8 REDS ROLL INTO RENOUF SHIELD FINAL

The Wavell High Year 8 Red Rugby League Team booked themselves a trip to Suncorp Stadium for the Final of the Steve Renouf Shield with an impressive 32 to 6 point win over Redcliffe at Shawsportz on Tuesday the 7th of August.

Trailing at half time to the Peninsula team the Wavell boys played some impressive football in the back end of the game to book themselves a rematch with Keebra Park in the Final to be played at Suncorp Stadium on Friday the 17th of August at 5:45pm as the curtain raiser to Broncos v Bulldogs clash.

Wavell Highs Year 10 Blue Rugby League team opened the Schools silverware collection on Tuesday the 13th of June in the final of the local/ district Sci-Fleet Toyota , Aspley/Broncos Challenge.

Having defeated Pine Rivers High 28 - 12 in the Major Semi-final the Wavell side were prepared for the rematch after Pine Rivers progressed to the Grand Final by via their win over Aspley High the previous week.

Early tries to Dean Fogarty and Harrison Holmes saw Wavell lead the first half before Pine Rivers scored in the corner with 30 seconds remaining, taking the game to the halftime break with the score 8 to 4 in Wavells favour.

Unforced errors in the early stages of the second half saw Wavell have to come up with some scrambling defence to repel Pine Rivers sustained attacks.

A period of possession allowed Wavell High to take advantage of some good field position.

Captain and eventual man of the match Daniel Culgan scored and converted his own try mid way through the second half to take Wavell further ahead.

A late rally by Pine Rivers saw them cross again with the scores remaining at 14 to 8 in Wavells favour at fulltime. Congratulations boys!
WAVELL FIRSTS DEFEAT CAV ROAD
Wednesday 30th May, Round 4 of the Langer Trophy saw Wavell Highs first team play Cavendish Road High at Langlands Park, Cooparoo.

A narrow 22-16 win in the dying stages of the qualifying rounds, over a determined Cavendish Road outfit by the Wavell side, saw the team approach this game with greater enthusiasm and purpose.

An error ridden start by both teams saw both sides locked in a tight tussle before some good lead up work saw a great individual try to Cameron Smallwood in the corner, open the scoring.

The Wavell side stepped up a notch with subsequent tries to Jay Spletter(2), Gary Riccardi (players Player) and Troyden Watene-Edwards increasing the lead before a brilliant intercept and 80 metre run by Greg Page from his own line, finished the try scoring for the day.

Conversions to Jacob"Charlie" Samoa (4 from 5) and Jay Spletter (1 from1) allowed Wavell to run out 34 to nil winners.

WAVELL OPEN 2’S WIN AT WYNNUM

Wednesday 30th of May saw Wynnum High host Wavell high at Kougari Oval in the final round match of their Struddys Challenge pool for 2007.

A good start by Wavell saw tries to Rob Manning and Brandon Sengelman, converted by David Hammond and Josh Poiani (from the sideline), allowed Wavell to jump an early lead.

A drop in intensity late in the second half saw Wynnum cross with the conversion taking the score to 12 - 6 at halftime. Poor handling by both sides saw a tough, tight second half with Wynnum crossing for 2 more tries to allow the hosts to take a 14 -12 lead.

Staunch defence by centres Scott Ryan and David Hammond helped the defensive line remain strong after repetaed Wynnum attacking raids.

A knock on with only minutes remaining saw Wavell move the ball through the hands to allow Scott Ryan to score in the corner with Josh Poiani converting, giving Wavell a 18 - 14 lead and eventual full time score.
OPEN 2'S ANNUAL ST PETER CLAVER COLLEGE CHALLENGE
Wavell SHS get it on
Wavell SHS get it on

Wednesday 28th March saw the Wavell Open 2’s shape up against St Peter Claver College from Ipswich, in what has become an annual challenge match between the two schools.

With bragging rights on the line for another year the scene was set at Bishop Park (North’s Seniors) for an action packed game.

Wavell opened the scoring and laid a solid foundation with good set plays and a solid kicking game allowing the good field position to be capitalised on and converted into points.

Two soft tries allowed the visitors to stay in touch, but Wavell went to the break with the momentum and the scoreboard still on their side.

Clear half time instructions from Coach Brentnall to stick to the game plan allowed the attack to keep Peter Claver on the back foot from the whistle.

Outstanding up front defence from the forwards negated the opposition’s size advantage and allowed Wavell to finish at full time with a 28 to 10 victory.

Player’s player, went to David “2 Try” Hammond who had a great game when he took the field with Jay Spletter converting 4 from 4 to finish with a perfect score sheet for the day.

This lays a solid platform for the Wavell 2’s upcoming match at the big homecoming game to be held at 3:30p.m at Shawsportz on the 18th of April. See you there

Wavell SHSBig 6 Round 1 Arm Wrestle

Wednesday 14th March saw the first round of the Langer Trophy Big 6 competition kick off for the 2007 season.

Wavell State Highs First Rugby League team looking to start on a positive note for the year, traveled to the Gold Coast to play competition pace setters Palm Beach-Currumbin.

Both teams announced their intentions right from the kick off with some punishing defence on both sides. Palm Beach went into the break 10 nil up after capitalising on some lucky bounces of the ball.

A tight second half battle saw the smaller Wavell side defend repeated wave after wave of Palm Beach attack with a determination that frustrated the home side.

A neat little right foot step, from the scrum base Saw half Sean Yorston cross under the black dot, 5 minutes from full time, with Jacob “Charlie” Samoa converting. Time ran out for the Wavell team with the final score remaining at 10-6 to Palm Beach at fulltime.

Wavell will now have to regroup for their next game, Homecoming, at Shawsportz on the 18th of April.
Wavell SHSGrand Final Rematch
In a replay of last years Michael Hancock Cup (14 years) Suncorp Stadium final, the Wavell SHS Walters Cup (15 years) team snatched a sensational second half come from behind win over Palm Beach-Currumbin (PBC) SHS at Tugun Seniors on Wednesday 14th March.

With planes roaring in overhead delivering dignitaries for the NRL season launch at Q 1 tower, the scoring was opened when Michael “Sticks” Lucas crossed for a try in the corner. Two quick tries to PBC allowed the home team to take a 12 to 4 lead at halftime.

Some well chosen words from coach Kennedy at halftime saw the Wavell team come out with a lot more intensity leading to an early second half try to Kelvin Jones.

A fantastic off load from Nathaniel Peteru-Barnett allowed Zac Strasser to cross 10 minutes later with Wavell regaining the lead 14 points to 12. Less than 5 minutes from fulltime Mitchell Frei found himself in space from a well timed run before ‘tipping on’ to Damian Genero for another 4 pointer, leaving the score at 18 to 12 at fulltime.
