MIXED RESULTS FOR JUNIOR SHARKS

The Sharks SG Ball team scored a clinical win while the Matthews Cup Sharks went down in a closely fought contest in round two junior rep matches.

In games played at St Mary's Stadium against Western Sydney Academy, the Ball Sharks, despite being minus a number of their week one starters due to injury, never gave their opponents a chance in running in seven tries in a 34-0 victory.

The Sharks began well with two first half tries to winger FInlay Dibley, who would eventually score three on the night, before taking an 18-0 advantage to the break.

The under-18 Sharks came out in the second half with a similar attitude to the first and a four pointer to prop Kurt Dillon, his second try of the evening, converted by fullback Keiron Rollinson, seeing the score blow out to 24-0, effectively putting the result beyond doubt.

The win was their second from two starts for the Ball Sharks following on from a scrappy victory against the Central Coast in round one.

In the Matthews Cup there was disappointment when the Sharks failed to turn a 6-0 half time lead into a victory in going down by 13-7 to Western Academy.

While the Connor Tracey try, scored after some excellent lead up play from hooker Jayden Brailey and fullback Scott Allen, had the Sharks optimistic about a positive outcome, second half penalties and errors invited their opponents back into the match, with their opposition capitalising in running out narrow victors.

After suffering a frustrating loss in week one against the Central Coast, the under 16 Sharks will now go back to the drawing board in a bid to get their season on track.

The Matthews Sharks have a bye next weekend, while the Ball Sharks travel to Perth to play the WA Reds.

ONE UP ONE DOWN FOR JUNIOR SHARKS

The Sharks SG Ball team began their season with a win, while the Matthews Cup side was beaten in round one matches played against the Central Coast at Woy Woy Oval.

Desite clocking off late in the second half, to the frustration of coach Dave Howlett, the Ball Sharks triumphed 34-26, while it was the Central Coast who came away convincing 20-4 winners in the Matthwes Cup clash.

The Matthews Cap match began in torrential rain and it was the Sharks opponents who handled the poor conditions the best, jumping out to a 14-0 lead at the half time break.

Revved up by the coaching staff the under-16 Sharks began the second period much better and unlike the first 30-minutes managed to control the ball and put some pressure on the Central Coast team as they battled to get back into the contest.

Despite their best efforts however it was the Coast who would be next to score, a barge over try under the posts taking them out to a 20-0 lead, an advantage which would prove a deficit too high for the Sharks to claw back.

A try out wide to Connor Tracey, laid on as a result of a strong charge from back rower Marcus Pappas, the only score for the Cronulla team.

In the SG Ball it was a Sharks side that played in patches, however a lack of concentration and ball control over the entirity of the match left the Cronulla boys with the two competition points but plenty of work to do ahead of their round two match next weekend.

The Sharks scored some spectacular tries but on the negative side conceded a few soft tries to their oponents, with the teams going to half time with Cronulla in front 18-10.

Kicking into gear early in the second period the Sharks raced away to a match winning 28-10 lead, but late tries to the Central Coast made it interesting before a solo 70-metre effort from interchange hooker Matt Hood sealed the result.

Both Sharks district rep teams now head to St Marys Stadium next Saturday for matches against the West Sydney Academy, the Matthews Cup kicking off at 6.00pm, followed by the SG Ball at 7.30pm.

PREPARATIONS CONTINUE FOR YOUNG SHARKS

The Sharks Matthews Cup and SG Ball teams met the Bulldogs in trials on Saturday, with both teams having one final trial remaining before the start of their season proper.

The young Sharks travelled to Ruse Park in Bankstown to tackle the Bulldogs with both teams showing some encouraging signs despite being beaten by their rivals.

The Matthews Sharks began strongly with a try out wide following a clever backline play, however with a handful of their leading players rested with minor injuries in a precaution ahead of the start of the season, the physically bigger Bulldogs managed to wear down the under-16 Sharks. The final margin saw the Bulldogs scoring four tries against the lone four pointer from the Cronulla team.

Coach Steve Holz, while realising their was more work ahead in the coming weeks, praised the effort and commitment of his team as he looked ahead to his round one clash with the Central Coast in two weeks time.

In the SG Ball it was the Bulldogs who asserted an early dominance and remained in control for much of the match, but with Sharks coach Dave Howlett still assessing his talent and tweaking combinations prior to the season opener, their was enough to indicate the under-18 Sharks will be competitive once the SG Ball competition officially gets underway.

The final trial matches for the junior Sharks are set down for next Saturday at Toyota Stadium against South West Sydney Academy (SWAS) and Western Suburbs.

A combination of the Sharks Matthews Cup squad and the Under 15's Development squad will take on SWAS, kicking off at 4.00pm, followed by the Sharks v Wests Magpies Matthews trial at 5.30pm.

The SG Ball Sharks will then play Wests beginning at 7.00pm.

Round one of the Junior Representative season sees the Sharks play the Central Coast at Woy Woy on February 11, with Matthews Cup at 2.30pm and SG Ball at 4.00pm (times subject to change).
