SCHOOLBOYS CLASH IN GRAND FINAL
Mackay's Daily Mercury
MACKAY State High claimed their third straight Terry Hayes Shield with a 22-10 win over southside rivals St Patrick's College at the JRL Grounds last night.

In what was a scrappy affair, the Milton St boys held off a gutsy challenge from St Pat's to claim honours in the Mackay and district secondary school rugby league grand final.

Mackay High second-rower Corban Duffy was the Alf Abdullah blazer recipient after producing a player-of-the-match performance.

Rake Kelvin Nielsen and Duffy helped the more fancied Mackay High to a blistering 10-0 start before their rivals hit back through back-rower Tom Jacklin to make it 10-6 at the break.

Centre Buchanan Rawiti gave MSHS some breathing room but lock Pat Gregor ensured a tense finish to the match by bringing St Pat's to with a converted try, 16-10.

Duffy then sealed the match with a four-pointer, converted by Dylan Smith.

“There was some solid defence - they came with intent,” Mackay State High Rugby League Academy co-ordinator Bill Esau said of a seemingly rejuvenated St Pat's side, which was bolstered by a strong effort from centre Ryan Jones.

Meanwhile, Mackay State High also won the under 15 schoolboys final with a 34-10 win over Mercy College.

Mackay High's Damon Mooney was recognised as best on ground as his school claimed the Booker Primrose Shield for the third consecutive year.

Halfback Eamon Kelly was among Mercy's best.

LAST GAME FOR CUTTERS
Story & Photo By : Sally Boxall Mackay's Daily Mercury

MACKAY State High School student Kelvin Nielsen is poised to make his Queensland Cup debut for the Mackay Cutters in their final match of the season against the Tweed Heads Seagulls at Cudgen Oval on Saturday.

The talented 17-year-old, who is the regular hooker for Mercury Cup minor premiers Souths, will be the youngest player to take to the field for the Skills Training Mackay Cutters in their short history.

Nielsen has been named on the bench in place of Roy Baira.

It is a crunch game for the Cutters, who are hoping to avoid the wooden spoon and send departing coach Shane Muspratt out on a winning note.

Mackay operations manager Jamie McDonald said Nielsen would be the first player to graduate from the Cutters' under 18 Mal Meninga Cup team and he has been on the cusp of a Queensland Cup debut during the latter stages of the season.

“His opportunity has come along and it's a good reward for him,” McDonald said.

McDonald said it was a “great advertisement” for the local league as well as the Mal Meninga Cup and under 16 Cyril Connell Cup.

Nielsen comes into the team at a critical stage.

If Redcliffe defeats Easts, only a victory over the Seagulls will ensure the Cutters avoid the wooden spoon.

And that, McDonald said, is only one of the motivating factors for the Cutters on Saturday.

“There are a lot of reasons to want to win, and obviously (missing the wooden spoon) is one of them, but it's not the only driving force,” he said.

He said there was also the chance to finish the season on a high note and give the team momentum and confidence for next year's pre-season.

A victory this weekend would also mean the Cutters improve on their 2008 record by one win, which McDonald said might only be a small improvement, but it is an improvement nonetheless for the fledgling club.

But their task this Saturday won't be an easy one, with the Tweed Heads side desperate to win to guarantee them a place in the finals.

However, the Mackay side could face Tweed Heads without prop Josh Rovelli, after he was charged with a grade one reckless high tackle after an incident in last weekend's loss to Souths Logan.

The charge carries 300 points, which equates to three games, and an early guilty plea would mean a two-game suspension.

But McDonald said the Cutters were still considering fighting the severity of the charge and would make a decision today after reviewing the footage.

SCHOOLBOYS ARE SET FOR FOOTY FINAL
Mackay's Daily Mercury
St Patrick's player Jason Jester runs into the Mackay High defence.
FOR a school with such a proud tradition in rugby league, this season has been far from ideal for St Patrick's College, who were forced to withdraw from the North Queensland quarter finals of the Arrive Alive Cup.

But today, they have a chance to restore some honour and end the year on a high note when they take on Mackay State High School in the open division one final of the Mackay and district secondary school rugby league challenge.

The winner of the match, which will be contested at the Mackay JRL grounds at 6.15pm today, claims the Terry Hayes Shield.

It won't be an easy task for St Patrick's, after the talented Mackay High side finished third in the Super 8 series and reached the NQ semi finals of the Arrive Alive Cup.

But St Patrick's rugby league co-ordinator Kevin Blakey said his team can't wait to get onto the field.

“It would be nice to finish the year with a win, but Mackay High are a very good side,” he said.

“Our boys are ready to play.”

Among those set to play critical roles for St Patrick's are Jason Lester and Brett Cuddihy.

Blakey said forwards Matt Collins and Chris Martin would also be important to St Patrick's chances of creating an upset today.

The open final follows the under 15 division one final between Mackay High and Mercy College, which kicks off at 5.15pm.

The under 15s are vying for the Booker Primrose Shield.

Division two finals and the division one Year Eight decider were contested a few weeks ago.

CUP HOPES ARE DASHED
Mackays Daily Mercury
MACKAY State High's open schoolboys side was bundled out of the Arrive Alive Cup at Townsville yesterday by a merciless Ignatius Park.

The Milton Street boys were aiming to progress to the North Queensland final for the third consecutive year but were thumped 44-10 in the NQ semi-final.

The under strength Mackay side “was out of the game at half time,” according to coach Troy Rovelli, who watched his side succumb to a 32-0 deficit against a “very good side.”

“It's been a rough week,” Rovelli conceded after his team was stricken with injury and illness in the lead-up to the contest.

“We had a few blokes out and some that have missed training sessions because of sickness,” he said.

Halves pairing Leon Curry and Dylan Smith were both forced to miss crucial training runs while slick centre Rogan Dean also battled illness.

Meanwhile, Dermot Prior and Ian Brown were among those injured.

“We got off the bus and we were a bit jaded and never really got going in the first half,” Rovelli said.

“We had no footy in the first half and kept turning the ball over. I asked for more consistency in the second half and they gave us that.”

Indeed, the Mackay High boys dug deep in the second stanza with Kelvin Nielsen and Dean crossing for tries.

Rovelli, who has recently taken the coach's reins at MSHS from Don Saunders, said it was perplexing to play the game in Townsville, considering the other semi-final between Townsville's Kirwan High and Yeppoon's St Brendans was played at Mackay yesterday.

Kirwan caused a boilover by beating St Brendan's 17-10 to ensure an all Townsville NQ final.

Local finals

MACKAY State High will now focus on the Tarry Hayes Shield, which is likely to be played next week.

Their opponents in the Mackay district rugby league open schoolboys grand final will be St Patrick's College.

In the under 15 Booker Primrose Shield for under 15s, Mackay High will clash with Mercy College.

• Results from other Mackay district rugby league schoolboys finals, played yesterday.

MAGPIES' JUNIOR RANKS FULL OF TALENT

MAGPIES may be struggling in the senior ranks, but a quick look at the junior league scene shows the club's future is bright.

The Magpies under 15 side is packed full of talent and looking to make it four in a row, after winning the last three premierships in younger age groups.

Captain and second-rower Clinton Hewitt says the team is particularly strong in the backs, with five-eighth Jeremy Tetley-Bishop a Capricornia rep and Shiloh Viti playing for Mackay at centre or wing.

“We've got a few new players but it's much the same as last year,” he said.

“Half of our side makes Mackay teams.

“We're going pretty good, we've won three of five matches this season.”

Hewitt, 15, will be one of 25 Mackay High Rugby League Academy year 10 and 11 players off to England for a month's tour in September.

The players have been busy fundraising, including cleaning up the rubbish at the showgrounds and helping with the shop during the recent under 15 state championships at the JRL grounds.

Hewitt was a member of the President's team for that championship. It won three of four matches and took out the Consolation Cup.
NQ rep selection

MACKAY'S under 16 side just failed to take out the NQ title, going down 26-22 to Townsville in the decider yesterday.

“We scored with three minutes to go but just couldn't make up the leeway,” coach Mick Baker said.

Front rower Daniel Matsen, lock Dylan Bell and five-eighth Brett Cuddihy were named in the NQ team for the state carnival in Brisbane on July 2-5.

The under 14s finished third, missing out on second by just half a point at Townsville, coach Brad Henry said.

Proserpine's Ronald Pender-Webb and Luke Henry and Mackay's Cody Williams picked for the NQ team.

The under 13s also finished third, losing only to Cairns and Townsville.

But they got a massive six players in the NQ squad after improving all carnival, coach Ken Shuttlewood said.

Sarina's Liam Blyth and Nicholas Filosi, Magpies' Reece Heel and Regan Grieve, Shane Wright from Proserpine and Brothers' Patrick Johnson are in the squad to compete at Acacia Ridge.

ORIGIN STARS IN THE MAKING
Mackay's Daily Mercury
FORMER Mackay player Dane Gagai's decision to commit to rugby league and sign with the Brisbane Broncos looks to be paying off.

The 18-year-old has been enjoying a successful season with the club's under 20 Toyota Cup side, which is currently ninth on the ladder.

And Gagai yesterday added another achievement to his resume when he was named on the wing for the Queensland under 18 side to play New South Wales in the curtain-raiser to the second State of Origin game in Sydney on June 24.

Also named in the team was Pat O'Hanlon, another future star from Mackay who is now based in Sydney with the Parramatta Eels.

Gagai is also a talented rugby union player and was captain of the First XV at Brisbane Boys College last year.

When he finished school, both the Broncos and Queensland Reds rugby union team was chasing his signature, before he eventually chose the rugby league option.

It's a decision he's extremely happy with after settling in well with the Broncos.

“I'm loving it; I'm glad I went with rugby league,” he said.

He has been happy with his form in the Toyota Cup so far this season, where he has played nine games and helped the team move up the ladder after a shaky start.

However, he did miss a couple of games with a finger injury.

Gagai said he was looking forward to playing in the Queensland under 18 team and being part of the Origin spectacle at ANZ Stadium.

“It should be good,” he said.

O'Hanlon, meanwhile, has played seven Toyota Cup games for the Parramatta side, which is currently 13th on the ladder.

This is the third time O'Hanlon has made the Queensland under 18 side and he also played for junior Australian teams previously.

LAST HURRAH FOR COACH
Mackay's Daily Mercury
MACKAY State High School's open Super 8 team will be looking to give coach Don Saunders a fitting send-off when they play Kirwan State High as part of a double-header of schoolboys football at the Mackay JRL grounds today.

Saunders is transferring to Palm Beach Currumbin school on the Gold Coast and today's match is his last with Mackay SHS - the team he has helped transform into one of the state's most dangerous schoolboy outfits.

The Mackay team will clash with Townsville's Kirwan SHS at 5pm, following another blockbuster between renowned rugby league nurseries St Brendan's College and Ignatius Park College.

“It will be a great afternoon of football,” Saunders said.

Mackay SHS has been in strong form in the lead-up to today's game, after battling to a 22-all draw against St Brendan's and then comfortably defeating Emmaus College.

They've got a few injuries, with key players like Kailem Perkins and Jordan White ruled out of the game, but with the likes of Leon Curry, Brad Simpson and Kelvin Neilsen all in hot form recently, Saunders is confident he still has a team that will be able to match it with Kirwan.

But he's not underestimating the strength of the Townsville outfit.

“With Kirwan, you've got to be ready to play,” he said. “They're a good side.”

Saunders will be looking for another effective defensive game from his players to get them home today.

“Our defence is what has been winning us games,” he said.

Today's game will determine whether Mackay SHS is seeded third or fourth ahead of the North Queensland quarter finals of the national Arrive Alive Cup competition.

Saunders is happy with how the team has improved throughout the Super 8 and believes they will continue to flourish after his transfer.

Saunders has been and instrumental figure in developing the MSHS rugby league academy.

He said his time at the school has been “really enjoyable” and is pleased with where the academy is at.
“We can mix it with any school in Queensland,” he said.

Saunders said there was plenty of promising players coming through the academy's ranks and he is confident the program will remain in good hands.

Meanwhile, St Patrick's College will meet Abergowrie College at 2pm at Bowen tomorrow in a must-win clash.

MACKAY HIGH SNATCHES SUPER 8 DRAW
Mackay's Daily Mercury
RUGBY LEAGUE: A huge comeback to force a 22-all draw with St Brendan's College kept Mackay State High School's Super 8 stocks high yesterday.

Down 18 - 0 at half time at Shark Park, Mackay High looked out of the game against the Yeppoon side, one of the heavyweights of the schoolboys competition.

But a four tries to one comeback in the second half secured a draw and second spot in the Super 8 pool, and praise from Mackay High's coach Don Saunders.

“They got away to an 18 - 0 start but in the second half we clawed our way back,” Saunders said.

“The wind was with them; they got away and we had a slow start.

“I'm proud of them; they kept battling away which is what our team is about.”

Mackay High ran in two tries by Kelvin Nielsen and one each to Corben Blackie and Jordan White.

Five-eighth Leon Curry, front rowers Daniel Matsen and Cooper Hrida and lock Blake Simpson were among Mackay High's best.

Mackay High produced a similar courageous performance last year to bundle St Brendan's out of the national Arrive Alive Cup.

They play their final match in the Super 8 against Emmaus College at Rockhampton next Thursday, which will determine final placing in their pool for the Arrive Alive Cup.

Saunders said his side would get better.

“We've got a lot of improvement in us; we've just got to keep plugging away.”

St Patrick's College fell to a narrow 6 - 4 loss to Emmaus College in another Super 8 match at Shark Park on Tuesday.

Emmaus scored a converted try with just minutes remaining to win.

ONE of North Queensland's biggest schoolboy rivalries will re-ignite at Shark Park today when Mackay State High tackles an imposing St Brendan's College outfit in a Super 8 contest.

The hosts, who produced a courageous performance to bundle St Brendan's out of the national Arrive Alive Cup last year, will need to be on their toes to repel the Yeppoon side this time around.

St Brendan's boasts three state representatives including lightning fullback Maipele Morseau.

They haven't conceded a point during this campaign, thumping St Patrick's College 50-6 and Emmaus College 50-0.

But Mackay High coach Don Saunders is confident his boys will give the visitors a scare.

“They're a very traditional rugby league school which is hard to beat (but) we've got a lot of workers in this team that are ready to battle away,” he said of his side which includes five Capricornia players.

The Milton Street crew has only had one Super 8 match to fine-tune their skills, belting inner-city rivals St Patrick's College 36-6.

“We didn't play very well against St Pat's and there were a few things that we needed to work on. We've now addressed those issues and are ready to play,” Saunders said.

The match kicks off at 3pm.

MACKAY'S well-known rugby league nursery couldn't quite discover the form of old yesterday when St Patrick's College was beaten 6-4 by Rockhampton side Emmaus College at Shark Park.

Mackay State High School overcame a dusty start to brush aside traditional adversaries St Patrick's College at South Mackay last night.

In what is dubbed by many as Mackay's biggest school sport rivalry, the Milton Street boys over-powered their opponents 36 - 4 at the Junior Rugby League Grounds to open their Super 8 campaign with a vital victory.

“It was a tale of two halves,” MSHS coach Don Saunders said.

“We didn't play that well in the first half and they didn't play well in the second.”

St Pat's opened the scoring but Milton St hit back to lead 12 - 4 at the break before running away with the match.
Saunders praised the efforts of second-rower Jordan White and halfback Dylan Smith and said his side would improve on that performance.

“I did expect us to be a bit rusty - we haven't had a trial for five weeks,” he said.

“We've just got to be more relaxed and get into the rhythm of the game.”

Mackay High will next meet Emmaus College in Rockhampton while St Pat's faces a daunting challenge against St Brendan's in Yeppoon.

Meanwhile, in the under 15 match last night Milton Street scored a convincing win over Mercy College to kick-start their Challenge crusade.

SCHOOLBOY TALENTS SET TO COLLIDE

TRADITIONAL rugby league rivals Mackay State High School and St Patrick's College go head-to-head today when the first round of the North Queensland Cowboys Super 8 schoolboys' competition kicks off at the JRL grounds.

The open competition involves eight schools from Yeppoon north to Cairns and doubles as a grading competition for the North Queensland quarter finals of the Arrive Alive Cup, a prestigious national schoolboys' competition.

Last year, the boys from Milton Street had the upper hand out of the two Mackay schools, defeating St Patrick's and finishing third in the Super 8s.

They went on to reach the North Queensland grand final of the Arrive Alive Cup, where they were knocked out by Townsville's Kirwan SHS.

St Patrick's, on the other hand, had a forgettable Super 8 season, finishing at the bottom of the table.
But, with a new rugby league academy established this year, program co-ordinator Kevin Blakey said things were definitely looking up for St Patrick's.

With the likes of forwards Tom Jacklin and Matt Collins, hooker Jason Lester and halfback Sean Hanley leading the charge, the players are keen to get on the park for today's game.

“Milton Street are a great side, they've set the benchmark,” Blakey said.

“Our aim is to go out and match them.”

And, despite St Patrick's unconvincing form last year, Mackay SHS coach Don Saunders said his side would not underestimate their opposition.

“We always expect a hard game from St Patrick's,” Saunders said.

“We'll have to be at our best to win.

“But I think if we can do the little things right, we'll have a good chance.”

Saunders said Mackay SHS's squad was shaping up well, with players like hooker Leon Curry and Kelvin Nielsen set for big seasons.

Meanwhile, in the under 15 division today, Mackay SHS meets Mercy College.

Round 2 of the Mackay and District Schoolboys Rugby League competition saw Mackay SHS teams in action for the first time this season.

In the Mick Shew Shield the Year 8 firsts and seconds both recorded wins.

The MSHS 2’s took on the Mirani SHS 2’s on the school oval in what proved to be a very tight contest.

With some gutsy defence late in the game the MSHS boys hung on to claim victory 22 - 20. Coach Tom Williams said, he was pleased with the early season effort and the boys really enjoyed themselves.

The MSHS 1’s travelled to Magpies to take on Mackay North.

This was coach Sam Granville’s first chance to look at his full strength side and they certainly impressed him.

The boys attacked for the majority of the game and ran out winners 68-0.

This is a promising start for the young side but they must continue to work hard as stronger opposition will surely follow.

In the Col Grosskreutz Shield (Under 15) the MSHS 2’s just hung on to claim victory 24 - 22.

Mackay North scored first from a fifth tackle option to have the MSHS boys on the back foot.

With some strong running from forwards Damon Mooney and Jacob Pinyon, and with Bradley Boyd and Stuart Wingate directing traffic MSHS took an 8 point half time lead.

To Mackay North’s credit they continued to fight with the game going done to the wire in a frantic final minute. MSHS’s best was Kyle O’Brien who ran exceptional lines on the fringes.

The final game of the night was the Open boys in the Mick Aprile Shield.

The MSHS 2’s played consistently to grind out a 22 - 0 win.

The performance pleased interim coach Don Saunders as a number of the players in the side were bottom age.

Trent Heading and Keith Hriba, both returning from injury, played strong games and should gain confidence from this performance.

SCHOOLS TAKE UP THE FOOTY CHALLENGE

MACKAY and district schools returned to the field this week for the 2009 Secondary Schools Rugby League challenge.

A total of 24 teams across three divisions - year eight, under 15 and open - are contesting this year's competition, which involves nine rounds.

Competition co-ordinator Bill Esau said there had already been some exciting games played in the early rounds.

But while there are some high-calibre sides entered in this year's challenge, Esau said the main emphasis was on participation.

“The absolute goal is to give kids the chance to participate... it's an opportunity for the boys to get out and play with their mates,” he said.

FRENCH JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE KEEP IMPROVING EACH YEAR

As the AIS Rugby League team get ready for their second game against the tough French Juniors tonight, the Aussies will be taking things a bit more serious after the the fisrt game on Tuesday night.

The French Rugby League are doing something right with their school & development of junor rugby league with all French Junior sides amounst the most improved team over the last couple years.

This is almost the Same side that belted a NSW CHS side a couple months ago at Western Weekender Stadium and a few of them played against the Australian Schoolboys in the special Centenary Test Match so won't mind another run at some Aussies.

The Australians will be sending in a much more seasoned & expericnced side into battle in tonights second Test match than the one that played on Tuesday afternoon France time.

Jordan Rankin from Palm Beach Currumbin SHS the, 2008 Arrive alive Cup Champions, and ohh yeah, the Gold Coast Titans, will play most likely at five eight. Laim Law is a zippy little player and the experience of Kurt Baptiste, Max Ray, Pat O'Hanlon, Justin O'Niell who should all shine.

Mackay SHS rugby league champ Patrick O'Hanlon will take to the footy field again this time in Toulouse, France.

When the Australian Instutite of Sport take on the French Juniors in two test matches.

Pat, who was selected in the Australian schoolboys team this year had to pull out due to breaking his arm.

A couple months in a sling was all Pat needed to fire up and play 1st grade for Mackay.

After this tour with the AIS team, Pat will be moving to Sydney to take up his position with the Parramatta Eels Toyota Cup team.

The first game in on tonight (i think, can't read French very well) and Pat will feature in this star studded team

MACKAY HIGH’S RUGBY LEAGUE ACADEMY ATTRACTS MORE ENGLISH STUDENTS

Students and teachers at Mackay High have been enjoying the company of three English schoolboys who have travelled from the other side of the globe to study and play Rugby League for nine weeks.

Ross Padget, Jordan Grayston and George Griffin all 16 have been attending Mackay High this term, training with the schools Academy teams and playing for local teams in the local club competition.

Ross, Jordan and George are all living with the families of Academy players Matt Ahern, Clinton Hewitt and Brandon Hassan.

All three boys attend Outwood Grange College in Wakefield and play Rugby League for the Stanley Rangers in the Yorkshire League.

The lads arrived in Australia just in time to join a Mackay High Academy team on the Gold Coast for the Titan’s Country Challenge, eventually winning the carnival after the Mackay High Academy team moved through the competition undefeated.

Ross and George are hard working back rowers and Jordan is a strong running centre that hopes to play rugby league professionally in the future.

Back home all the boys follow their local Super League team the Wakefield Wildcats and brought Wildcats jerseys as presents for their host brothers.

All three boys agree that our lifestyle is a lot more easygoing than they experience at home but also agree that the football is a bit faster. Ross has been playing for Sarina, Jordan has linked up with Souths and George has joined Norths where despite some minor injuries they have all enjoyed a degree of success.

Although the lads have missed their family and friends at home they have enjoyed their adventure immensely and remain impressed with Mackay’s winter weather which they enjoy because it is so ‘warm’. While in Mackay the boys have regularly joined our local ARL development officer Brad Henry travelling to district primary schools to help with his rugby league program.

They visited schools and worked with students at Hampden, Mirani, Calen and Proserpine, Brad also found time to take them on a crocodile spotting expedition in the creeks around Proserpine.

A group of Under 16 Mackay High Rugby League Academy players will be touring England in September 2009, playing games against school and club academy teams in London and the northern counties including a team from Outwood Grange College in Wakefield, a school with over two thousand students and winners of this years Wakefield Cup and finalist in the regions Yorkshire Cup.

All the boys think that the Mackay High Academy team will do well on their England tour next year. Jordan says that particularly in the north of England, the colder, harder fields will suit our up-tempo style of play.

This ongoing international exchange program is a Mackay High Rugby League Academy initiative that aims to provide young Wakefield and Mackay players with the opportunity to live and compete overseas.
KIRWAN BURSTS BUBBLE

The bubble burst for Mackay State High yesterday when they lost to northern nemesis Kirwan State High.

After recording a spate of strong wins, their Arrive Alive Cup campaign came crashing down with a 32-16 defeat in the North Queensland final at Townsville.

"It was a good battle - a real good schoolboys game of footy," coach Don Saunders said after the much-anticipated showdown.

Mackay SH nabbed an early lead against their opponents when promising prop Andrew Ward crashed over but they were behind 14-6 at the half-time break.

Tries to winger Bevan Healy and Trent Heading kept the side in the hunt; they trailed 20-16 with just 10 minutes to go.

But Kirwan SH rallied in the final moments to cement a coveted berth in the Queensland final.

Many schoolboy rugby league fans were predicting big things from Mackay High's rugby league nursery this year after their determined 2007 side surprised most to reach the North Queensland final.

But injuries, including to key player Pat O'Hanlon, cast some doubts on their potential in 2008.

However, the Milton Street boys showed plenty of grit to knock out Yeppoon juggernaut St Brendan's in the NQ semi-finals to ensure their place in the NQ decider.

About a dozen of the players are expected to remain with the team for next year when Saunders expects the school to mount another strong challenge in the Cup.

"We've got to go to the next level yet," he said.

MACKAY HIGH CHARGES INTO THE NORTH QUEENSLAND FINAL

It was ugly, but Mackay State High School did the job in the North Queensland semi-final of the Arrive alive Cup at Shark Park yesterday.

The 18-14 win over arch-rivals St Brendan’s, Yeppoon, has propelled MSHS into the NQ final, against Kirwan High or Ignatius Park.

The two Townsville sides clash next week, with the final to be played the following week at a venue to be decided.

Mackay coach Don Saunders described the win as “ugly”.

“It was a bit scrappy as it was played in very windy conditions,” he said.

“The first 20 minutes was just sorting each other out, but our defence was excellent and across the park we were strong.”

Halves Leon Curry at five-eighth and halfback Marmin Barba led the side well, and the forwards were strong.

Saunders said front rower Andrew Ward, who scored two tries, and lock Brad Simpson were outstanding.

Jordan Richardson scored MSHS’s other try, and Barba kicked three goals.

Saunders wasn’t in the least concerned about how his side won the game.

“It’s always good when you can play ugly and still win the game,” he said.

“We were not perfect with the ball control but our defence held on well and we did a lot of the little things right, and our attitude in defence was good.”

St Brendan’s beat Mackay in the NQ grant final last year, and had beaten them 16-10 in this year’s Super 10 series, so the win was satisfying for the coach and team.

A bonus for the team was that many of the side which played yesterday were in Year 11.

“Today 12 of our players were in Year 11, and last year 15 of the 17 were from the 11s,” Saunders said.

“We’re going to have a lot of the Year 12s back for the final.

“I think it shows the depth that we have, we’re comfortable.”

Saunders said he wasn’t sure which of Kirwan or Ignatius Park would make the final.

“We’ve beaten Ignatius Park this year and they’ve beaten us.

“It’s always tough between either of those two sides, so it’s going to be a great battle.”

A TEST OF METTLE

It's set to be one of the year's most anticipated schoolboy showdowns.

Today, at Shark Park, Mackay State High School will meet Yeppoon's St Brendan's College in the North Queensland semi final of the Arrive Alive Cup.

With no shortage of history between the two schools, the match is one rugby league fans will not want to miss.

It was St Brendan's that bundled Mackay High out of the competition last year in the North Queensland grand final.

The Yeppoon school again had the wood over Mackay when they played earlier this year in the Super 10 series securing a hard-fought 16-10 win.

Mackay High mentor Don Saunders admitted St Brendan's always pose a tough challenge.

"The boys know they'll have to work hard for the whole 50 minutes," Saunders said.

But he said his side had improved since that six point loss and he believes he has the team that can beat the renowned rugby league nursery.

His team is expecting a physical game from St Brendan's, but Saunders said the side had prepared strongly for the match. "We had a really good win against St Patrick's," he said.

"We've trained well and we've got a few blokes back from injury."

They include Peter Hassell, who made his Mercury Cup debut on the weekend for Souths, scoring two tries, and star halfback Marmin Barba.

Neither played in the last encounter with St Brendan's.

However, the Mackay side will go into battle without inspirational second-rower Pat O'Hanlon, who broke his arm in a Mercury Cup clash in late June.

"Pat is obviously a great player, but the boys have stepped up to the mark," Saunders said. He said he was confident with the side Mackay High will take into the must-win match.

"We're really happy with the players we've got, they've worked hard," Saunders said.

"This is one of the biggest games they will play in and they're looking forward to it."
CURRY TO RAISE ORIGIN CURTAIN

He might be facing a passionate New South Wales home crowd, but young Mackay sensation Leon Curry can't wait to run out onto ANZ stadium tonight for the State of Origin curtain-raiser.

The talented Souths junior is part of the Queensland under 16 team, which takes on NSW as a prelude to the highly-anticipated main game.

Curry, 16, said he didn't "really mind" playing in enemy territory and was just looking forward to getting on the field.

"I can't wait to get out there and play," he said yesterday.

"Everyone is pretty excited at the moment."

Curry admitted he would "probably be a bit nervous" today as the game approaches.

But he reckons his Queensland team are ready for a big showing against their southern rivals. "We've got a pretty good side," he said.

Most of the team has the advantage of having played together in last year's under 15 Queensland schoolboys side, which Curry captained at the national titles.

Curry has been named on the bench for tonight's match and expects to play hooker when on the field.

Curry took up rugby league in Mount Isa when he was six and moved to Mackay "four or five years ago".
He is part of Mackay State High's rugby league academy.

PAT ON BACK FOR U18 REPS

Highly touted back-rower Pat O'Hanlon is one of three Mackay and district products to be named in a Queensland under 18 side which will tackle nemesis New South Wales in a State of Origin II curtain-raiser at Suncorp Stadium on June 11.

The 17-year-old sensation will play in front of a packed house alongside Souths junior Ryan Williamson and Proserpine prospect Chris Faust after the trio's impressive foray at the Queensland titles at Proserpine last weekend.

"I'm pretty stoked," O'Hanlon said after being named in the side.

As a wide running second-rower, O'Hanlon has a rather simplistic yet successful formula for success on the footy paddock.

"I just try to whack blokes when they're running at me and when I'm running I just try to make as much of an impact as I can," he said.

At 198cm and 98kg, O'Hanlon is growing into a force to be reckoned with.

He was man-of-the-match in the Northern Marlins' loss to Central Capras on Sunday and is a regular starter for the A grade Brothers side in the Mackay competition.

He earned a late call-up to the Queensland open schoolboys side last year despite being only 16 and was also named in a state under 16 merit side.

O'Hanlon is just one of three players in this year's state squad not to be aligned with a Toyota Cup under 20 outfit.

The Mackay State High student, who is on a three year deal with Parramatta, will link up with the Eels next year after admitting to more pressing concerns in 2007.

"We talked about it at the beginning of the year and I decided that school was my priority," he said.
Stand-out second-rower Faust is in the Cowboys under 20 outfit while winger Williamson is currently with the Sydney Roosters Toyota Cup side.

The strongly-built three-quarter was in the Australian open schooboys side last year when they toured New Zealand and is expected to be in contention again when the national side is named.

Fellow Mackay product and under 20 Cowboy Steve Eliott has been named in the Queensland Maroons side to tackle New South Wales Country at the Sunshine Coast on July 19.

Promising Mackay under 16 back Leon Curry, who was last year named in an Australian under 15 merit side, will play for a Queensland under 16 outfit against New South Wales in a curtain-raiser to State of Origin I at ANZ Stadium on May 21.

MACKAY HIGH TOO GOOD FOR ST PAT'S

Mackay State High's highly touted open schoolboys side kicked off their Super 10 campaign in the best possible way last night by thumping traditional inner city rivals St Patrick's College 36-16 at the Junior Rugby League Grounds.

After holding a 12-4 advantage at the break, the South Mackay boys scored three second half tries in just seven minutes to kick clear of their adversaries.

MSHS's completion rate was relatively low but the side made the most of their opportunities near the try-line.

In contrast, St Patrick's completed plenty of sets but struggled to get in goal.

With the likes of imposing back-rower Pat O'Hanlon and flyer Marmin Barba in their ranks, MSHS is expected by many to fare well in this year's Super 10 tournament, which is a part of the Arrive Alive Cup a prestigious national competition.

St Patrick's coach Dick Walsh said last night's encounter was "a pretty good hit-out for both sides".

His team faces a daunting task at home next week when they confront Yeppoon's North Queensland champions St Brendans.
HIGH EXPECTATIONS

After a shock appearance in the North Queensland grand final of the Arrive Alive Cup last year, the heat will be on Mackay State High School when they take on St Patrick's College at the Junior Rugby League Grounds tonight.

The game marks the opening round of the North Queensland Schoolboys Super 10 competition, which involves ten schools from Yeppoon north to Cairns.

With last year's MSHS team made up predominantly of year 11 students, many predicted the 2008 season would be their time to shine.

But the team surpassed all expectations in 2007 when they beat Townsville giants Ignatius Park College to become one of the state's top four rugby league schools.

Although coach Don Saunders said there was "no pressure" from within the camp, Mackay rugby league enthusiasts will be eager to see if the team can go one step better this year.

Saunders said the squad had retained much of its talent from last season.

Australian representatives Leon Curry and Pat O'Hanlon will combine with exciting prospects Marmin Barba, Callan Peach and Rogan Dean among others.

The team has played one trial game this year, when they went down 24-16 to Townsville's Kirwan High.

But Saunders said the team had used the game as just that a trial.

The Milton Street boys put traditional powerhouse St Patrick's in their place last year but Saunders said he expected their inner city rivals to come out firing tonight.

"They're always strong," he said.

"We'll have to be on the ball."

However, St Patrick's coach Dick Walsh said "I think everyone knows Milton has the mantle at the moment. There is no real pressure on us".

The St Patrick's team will include a few new faces this year.

Two of the players likely to play key roles in the St Patrick's side are forwards Tom Jacklin and Chris Martin.

MACKAY HIGH TEAMS DRY THEMSELVES OFF AND HEAD SOUTH TO ATTEND THE CLAIRVAUX MACKILLOP COLLEGE RUGBY LEAGUE 7S 2008

The Mackay State High School Rugby League Academy will hit the ground running in 2008 when three teams and seven staff attend the Clairvaux College Rugby League 7’s tournament in Brisbane this weekend.

The Clairvaux 7’s is a state-wide one day carnival which brings together many of Queensland’s and Northern NSW’s best schoolboy Rugby League players from Townsville to Lismore.

This is the third year that Mackay High has entered the competition, this time entering two open teams and an Under 15 squad.

Academy head coach Don Saunders views the carnival as a useful lead in to the regular season by providing some early training focus for the key attacking players involved.

Although the Open and Under 15 teams are stacked with potentially potent attacking weapons the recent wet weather has reduced training opportunities for all the touring party.

However, Saunders is confident that the players can return home with some good results from the fiercely contested carnival and is looking to some new talent, fresh to the Academy in 2008 to cement their positions with strong performances.

Three new players to come under scrutiny will be Peter Hassal a Northern Territory rep and AIS scholarship holder who has just arrived from Darwin, Harley Smith, a Darling Downs rep and former Mustangs player and blockbusting prop Andrew Ward an ex St Pats and Mackay representative.

2008 is shaping up as a very busy year for the Rugby League Academy with teams again participating in many games at home, in Townsville, Rockhampton, and Brisbane and on the Gold Coast.

Mackay High teams are again expected to figure prominently in the Cowboy’s sponsored North Queensland Under 15 Challenge and the Open North Queensland Super 8 competitions.

Mackay High are defending champions in the U/15 competition and after reaching the state quarterfinals of the Arrive Alive Cup last year, expectations of the school’s open team are understandably high.

The school is again looking forward to welcoming more English rugby league exchange students from Wakefield for a six week stay midseason, around the time of the Secondary Schools Titans Cup to be played on the Gold Coast where two school teams are expected to participate.

Planning continues for the 2009 UK tour following last year’s successful inaugural tour. Coming up in the near future are trial games, against Kirwan SHS and possibly St Brendan’s to be played in Mackay.

Two Kirwan High Open teams and an Under15 team will visit to play on the school oval next Wednesday.

The emerging football rivalry between Townsville’s Kirwan High and Mackay High will again feature through a series of Year eight and nine games later in the year. Mackay High is again expecting to inject a record number of players and teams into the local inter school competition this year as the Academy classes bulge in all age groups.

Player attending the Clairvaux College Rugby League 7’s include:
Open Squad
Marmin Barba, Ian Brown, Jack Clark, Leon Curry, Rogan Dean, Beven Healy, Peter Hassal, Assan Munro, Michael Murphy, Kelvin Nielson Patrick O’Hanlon, Callan Peach, Kailem Perkins, Dermot Pryor, Jordan Richardson, Buchanan Rawhiti, Daniel Simeon, Harley Smith, Brad and Daniel Simpson, Dylan Sadd, Dylan Smith, Cameron Tracey, Matt Tandy, Andrew Ward.
